38321003thrw··on The feds' vehicle 'kill switch' mandate is a gross violation of privacy
Michael Foucault - Crime and Punishment - The Means of Correct Training [formatting for emphasis mine]:

[A surveillance and hierarchical control] architecture that is no longer built simply to be seen (as with the ostentation of palaces), or to observe the external space (cf, the geometry of fortresses), but to permit an internal, articulated and detailed control - to render visible those who are inside it;

in more general terms, an architecture that would operate to transform individuals:

- to act on those it shelters,

- to provide a hold on their conduct,

- to carry the effects of power right to them,

- to make it possible to know them, to alter them.

Stones can make people docile and knowable. The old simple schemaof confinement and enclosure - thick walls, a heavy gate that prevents entering or leaving- began to be replaced by the calculation of openings, of filled and empty spaces, passages and transparencies.

Foucault has written tomes on this topic — the transformation of the ‘architectures of surveillance and control’ and its internalization as a means of unconscious self-policing. He didn’t live to see the internet and the pervasively present microphones and cameras and “surveillance capitalism”, but he did write the book on it.

Clearly, since India had warm relations with USSR and it was an important diplomatic portfolio and the diplomats top caliber. That simply means he was one of their top diplomats.

> He leans pro-Russia and anti-American

Good for him. It’s a free world and he’s entitled to his views and preferences. Regardless, he is intelligent, highly experienced, and provides a fresh (“oh no”) perspective on these matters.

This ex Indian diplomat analyses the recent Indian affair in context of BRICS and US’s views on the matter, and Modi’s “security state”:

https://www.indianpunchline.com/nijjar-affair-poses-an-exist...

”All in all, the Nijjar affair takes the lid off the acute contradictions in India’s foreign policies. The assumptions driving the foreign policy’s China-centric thrust turn out to be delusional; the “westernist” trajectory has landed in a cul-de-sac; the assiduously propagated larger-than-life global image of India turns out to be a mirage; foreign policy built on personality cult and opportunism rather than rational and consistent principles attuned to the world in transition got battered; and, most important, the hubris in India’s diplomacy boomeranged.

The Nijjar affair poses an existential dilemma. Surrendering to the US diktat will make India look a surrogate state and a laughing stock in the Global South. Indians won’t approve of it.

On the contrary, ignoring the diktat will be hugely consequential. Make no mistake, Five Eyes had a gory history against the Soviet Union; in the post-cold war era, it all but destabilised Hong Kong, and is today an active player in Myanmar and Thailand in India’s neighbourhood. Its entry in the subcontinent is ominous.“

And then (strangely more vigorous)

Construction drawings are not done on A4. Typical drafted drawing is uses handful of ft by ft range, say 3x4. So that should give ~2 orders of mag less sheets. Does 10,000 sheets of drafting paper sound more reasonable?

Internet says 747 has 6,000,000 parts, half of which are fasteners. So 3m individual components. “171 miles” of wiring. Blah blah. I can easily see 10k drawings to cover that beast, soup to nuts.

You know Don, what touched me about this wonderful story of the charming visionary from SV —- thanks for sharing — is that his reach is as wide as his heart is big! 38321003thrw··on OpenAI's chaos does not add up
The world according to a gas molecule and the world according to a statistician.

This needs to be amplified + defensive caveat regarding subscription to any “youtube” theories. That said, a member of a large organization, such as the US military, will have many stories to tell and phrase “FUBAR” iirc came out of the US Army. In fact, even being in smaller commercial enterprises, one sometimes wonders that anything gets done at all!

But things get done. The military can plan, provision, conduct, and win wars. Systems tools and state-spaces are the tools of top level control mechanisms. So, yes, things can be chaotic when viewed from a narrow perspective, but from another top level perspective, there is order.

But that absolutist “Do not” is neither wise nor reasonable. Malicious actors do exist.

Yes!

This is the nugget of this affair if indeed you are concerned about the effect and role of AI in human civilization.

The captains at the helm are not mature individuals. The mature ones (“the adult table”) are motivated by profit and claim no responsibility other than to “shareholders”.

I have a video link to an MIT lecture that disproves your assertion. Cache aware, cache adaptive, and cache oblivious algorithms are definitively analyzed using big O. In fact it is big O notions that provide assurances about these approaches.

Mechanical sympathy has little (if anything) to do with big-O, btw. LMAX, the poster child of mechanical sympathy, is really about minimizing the use of memory coherence machinery and not taking the substantial latency hits.

> It’s a bit tragic that Ilya and company ...

There must be an Aesop’s fable that sheds light on the “tragedy”.

https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/923989-if-you-choose-bad-co...

Or maybe this one? (Ape seems to map to Microsoft, or possibly a hat tip to Balmer ..)

The fable is of the Two Travellers and the Apes.

Two men, one who always spoke the truth and the other who told nothing but lies, were traveling together and by chance came to the land of Apes. One of the Apes, who had raised himself to be king, commanded them to be seized and brought before him, that he might know what was said of him among men. He ordered at the same time that all the Apes be arranged in a long row on his right hand and on his left, and that a throne be placed for him, as was the custom among men.

After these preparations, he signified that the two men should be brought before him, and greeted them with this salutation: “What sort of a king do I seem to you to be, O strangers?’ The Lying Traveller replied, “You seem to me a most mighty king.” “And what is your estimate of those you see around me?’ “These,” he made answer, “are worthy companions of yourself, fit at least to be ambassadors and leaders of armies”. The Ape and all his court, gratified with the lie, commanded that a handsome present be given to the flatterer.

On this the truthful Traveller thought to himself, “If so great a reward be given for a lie, with what gift may not I be rewarded if, according to my custom, I tell the truth?’ The Ape quickly turned to him. “And pray how do I and these my friends around me seem to you?’ “Thou art,” he said, “a most excellent Ape, and all these thy companions after thy example are excellent Apes too.” The King of the Apes, enraged at hearing these truths, gave him over to the teeth and claws of his companions.

The end.

We strongly & emphatically disagree. Analysis assumes a homogeneous computational regime for the said “infinite” store otherwise it is basically meaningless. If this assumption is known not to hold (for example in considering the role of caching in algorithms), this is specifically incorporated in the analysis. See “cache models” and cache-oblivious algorithms for examples.

38321003thrw··on The Myth of RAM (2014)
This article has a strange take on algorithmic scaling.

L1, L2, LL, MM, Disk, NetDisk ..., GalacticRAM.

Wow, you actually expected traversing ‘system boundaries’ with distinct access costs and maintain theoretical scaling?

An algorithm that is O(n) will be O(n) in L1, O(n) in L2, ,..., and yes O(n) in GalacticRAM. Each (sub-)system traversal is due to exceeding capacity limits.

There is likely a more interesting mathematical result buried in here, since we see that a series of sub-systems with relative constant order of magnitude increases in access costs in aggregate transforms f -> f’ with this interesting n^.5 term showing up instead of the logs.

How are you finding it out by [yourself]?

Did you find out e.g. Facebook will do the damage that it did and continues to do in social terms?

Have you done anything or has Facebook changed its way based on your ‘findings’?

The choice here is: does capital coupled with runaway egos provide better stewardship of socially impactful technology development or paper pushers or CIA plants?

“I think they could have won in the court of public opinion if their press release said they loved Sam but felt like his skills and ambitions diverged from their mission. But instead, they tried to skewer him, and it backfired completely.”

^^

I don’t think the wording of the “press release” is an issue.

This is a split over an actual matter to differ about: a genuine fork in the road in terms of pace and development of AI products, and, a CEO which apparently did not keep the board informed as it pursued a direction they feel is contrary to the mission statement of this non-profit.

The board could have done this in the most gracious of manners, but it would not have made a bit of difference.

On one side we have the hyper rich investor “grow grow grow” crowd and their attendant cult of personality wunderkind and his or her project, and on the other side bunch of geeky idealists who want to be thoughtful in the development of what is undeniably a world changing technology for mankind.

38321003thrw··on OpenAI board in discussions with Sam Altman to return as CEO
Sorry but that is ridiculous. The wording of the PR blurb is not what makes gears move in a giant like Microsoft.

I agree the board did botch this up. But this is in my view is a vindication of their being amateurs at corporate political games, that is all.

But this also means that Sam Altman’s “vision” and Microsoft’s bottom line are fully aligned, and that is not a reassuring thought. Microsoft one hears (see “5 foot pole”) even puts ads in their freaking OS.

This board should man up, and lawyer up.

38321003thrw··on Details emerge of surprise board coup that ousted CEO Sam Altman at OpenAI
There is a political economy as well as a technical aspect to this that present inherent issues. Even if we can address the former by say regime change, the latter issue remains: the domain is technical and cognitively demanding. Thus the practitioners will generally sound sane and rational (they are smart people but that is no guarantee of anything other than technical abilities) and non-technical policy types (like most of the remaining board members at openAI) are practically compelled to take policy positions based either on ‘abstract models’ (which may be incorrect) or as after the fact reaction to observation of the mechanisms (which may be too late).

The thought occurs that it is quite possible that just like humanity is really not ready (we remain concerned) to live with WMD technologies, it is possible that we have again stumbled on another technology that taxes our ethical, moral, educational, political, and economic understanding. We would be far less concerned if we were part of a civilization of generally thoughtful and responsible specimens but we’re not. This is a cynical appraisal of the situation, I realize, but tldr is “it is a systemic problem”.
