3131s··on Nothing can now be believed which is seen in a newspaper (1807)
> Our lives are lived in the present, locally.

Meaningless nonsense.

> You interact with people in your community thousands of times more than people you read about thousands of miles away.

So? How does that invalidate your civic obligation to be aware of the decisions made in the centers of power outside your community? This whole dichotomy between the "local interactions" / socializing vs. governance that happens "thousands of miles away" has no basis.

> Be where your feet are.

Try living in a real hell hole and see if you find self-help phrases like this useful.

DC++ and Soulseek for me.

I still use Soulseek (via Nicotine) to this day and it's great!

3131s··on Why has college gotten so expensive in the last 30 years? A blank check in 1993
I attended a small but well-known liberal arts school that increased tuition about 20k in well under a decade.

In a single year the tuition increased 5k, and yet the department of my major was downsized and classes that I needed to complete my degree were full. At the same time though they built a new $42 million "cultural exchange" building and began adding an enormous sports facility. It turned out that actually there was no intended purpose for the new building either, and it was mostly sat empty as far as I know.

3131s··on Tech my dad banned in our house when I was a kid
Rotten.com? Ogrish?

I was around ten when I saw these and the first thing I encountered was a video of a man's head exploding on contact with a helicopter blade, and then I scrolled down and saw a prostitute that had been chopped up and placed in a suitcase. The world is a remarkably vile place and the internet is just a reflection of it.

I was raised with a computer in my bedroom and no limits on anything since I can remember. I started watching porn at around 8-9 years old, for example, and far worse stuff within a year or two. I also was allowed a lot of physical freedom which unfortunately led to a felony arrest when I was in my early teens.

To be honest I'm not sure what effect this all had on me. What happened to your siblings? After all that and living in ghettos and third-world countries, I do feel maladjusted at this point in my life, but it's the sort of negative emotion that feels righteous -- as in the feeling that society is warped, not me, and I don't want to change even if it destroys me.

3131s··on How Drakeo the Ruler recorded an album from jail
And why is that? Being friends with gangsters is a crime now too?
3131s··on How Drakeo the Ruler recorded an album from jail
Ha! The video I posted is tame for gangster rappers. What exactly are you outraged by in the video? Crashing cars? Guns? Drinking lean? The lyrics?

What's really appalling is that Americans enacted stupid policies that pitted the police in war against the gangs over drug profits. The part of Watts where these rappers like Drakeo and 03 Greedo grew up is absolutely brutal, but the Crip set there is well connected after 50 years of activity. I guarantee these guys don't care whether you like it or not... but it's reality until you can overcome your outrage and legalize the things that make gang life so potentially lucrative.

3131s··on How Drakeo the Ruler recorded an album from jail
It's like some forms of metal and punk, being raw is part of the appeal. When most of your songs feature long interludes of "mud"-induced rambling, it's not that important than your prison-phone vocals sound pristine.
3131s··on How Drakeo the Ruler recorded an album from jail
Drakeo probably got this idea from Mac Dre, an earlier California rapper who also recorded an album from prison. Drakeo talks about Mac Dre in his lyrics and both share some stylistic tendencies like creating their own lingo.

Wow! Do HN people actually know Drakeo? I never expected to see this here.

Free Drakeo!

My dream is to live in a city of large "superblocks" with public roof spaces that are interconnected by skyways.
3131s··on Google: Open Letter to Australians
I don't get it... if News Corp doesn't want to be indexed can't they just set their robots.txt accordingly? It doesn't seem like they'll be able to successfully argue this.
3131s··on Django Async: What's new and what's next?
Check out Adonis, although it's not as complete as Django.
3131s··on Mozilla Fires Servo Devs and Security Response Teams
I do plan to stick with Firefox in the meantime until the project itself degrades. But it's time to see what else is out there so that I begin supporting another browser with a viable future, in the case the Firefox might not be around anymore or might not meet the criteria I have for a browser.
3131s··on Mozilla Fires Servo Devs and Security Response Teams
I love Firefox, and it's been my main browser for 15+ years, but starting today I'm going to research alternatives.

It's hardly the first time that Mozilla has screwed up royally, but in general I have tried to defend them against most criticisms in light of the circumstances around browser competition (or lack thereof). But I'm not sure I can do that anymore though, because this is such a bad sign. This CEO and her administrator underlings are useless and expendable in comparison to the people who have actually make Firefox, and I hope they know that.

3131s··on Mozilla lays off 250 employees while it refocuses on commercial products
I love Firefox but I'm going to start exploring other options for open source browsers.

It's obvious from this layoff that their priorities are off. The CEO should be fired.

3131s··on Apple’s ad network gets ‘preferential access to users’ data’ vs Facebook, Google
That's odd, because my operating system, available software repositories, and desktop environment are all pretty great.

To those downvoting...

Why is Bandar bin Sultan still free?

Why was information suppressed by congress concerning Bandar sending $130,000 to the two 9/11 hijackers? Why has the Bush family never been questioned about their close friendship with Bandar?

3131s··on Interview with Bill Gates on Covid, social media
It doesn't matter how long. The "go-to" source should have integrity, along with no financial stake in the issues at hand.
3131s··on Interview with Bill Gates on Covid, social media

3131s··on Interview with Bill Gates on Covid, social media

3131s··on American darknet vendor and Costa Rican pharmacist charged
It's 2020 and if you are still against legalization, or at least decriminalization, you are the enemy.

It's no longer incumbent on anyone else to explain to you why the drug war is immoral, prejudiced, and stupid. Violence is exploding all over the country and homicide clearance rates are at an all time low. The irony of what these fat, beer-swilling thugs at the "Department of Justice" and DEA are doing will not be lost on history.

3131s··on American darknet vendor and Costa Rican pharmacist charged
It's inconsistency of dose that kills opioid addicts, that's one of many reasons why legalization is preferable.

3131s··on Spotify CEO: musicians can no longer release music only “once every 3-4 years”
Artists can choose what song plays first on an album on Bandcamp.
3131s··on Spotify CEO: musicians can no longer release music only “once every 3-4 years”
No, only vapid pop music follows that one-hit-wonder blueprint. In almost every other genre the expectation is that a great album will be consistently great.

Sorry that you know of only ten decent bands, when there are actually tens of thousands of artists that never add filler to their albums.

3131s··on Universal Basic Income is Capitalism 2.0
I really can't be bothered to argue in depth but in the backdrop of record high wealth inequality in the US, your idea that the poor just need to spend less is beyond ridiculous.
3131s··on Universal Basic Income is Capitalism 2.0
In principle? Not sure what that means, but the incentives of a negative income tax vs. a UBI are different and that's why a UBI is preferable.
3131s··on Universal Basic Income is Capitalism 2.0
UBI is no more susceptible to this than a minimum wage raise, for example.

Basic rent controls and other affordable housing initiatives are usually advocated by UBI proponents. There's no reason we can't have both.
