3131s··on AWS forked my project and launched it as its own service
You want to make permissive licenses illegal or what? That's ridiculous.

Pick something like the MariaDB or CockroachDB license if you don't want Amazon to provide a hosted version of your software.

3131s··on Twitter and Facebook's action over Joe Biden article reignites bias claims
I believe free amplification is terrible.

Why? So that poor people can't be heard?

3131s··on SEO mistakes I've made and how I fixed them
Is the HTML that Hugo generates semantic and does it contain the usual metadata that search engines use?
3131s··on An Arrest in Canada Casts a Shadow on a New York Times Star, and the Times
Nice spin, but in what sense does the NYT have a good reputation?
3131s··on Face retouching settings should be off by default
Why do people find these retouched images attractive?

I'm a good looking guy (in shape, did modelling, etc.) and I just can't understand it. It's like makeup to me... wrinkles, freckles, scars, and everything else have never affected my perception of beauty because I tend to like an exotic, atypical appearance. Health and physical fitness have a much larger impact on attractiveness for me and all this stuff just seems like a poor imitation of what it actually is to look healthy.

3131s··on Reddit’s About page doesn't include Aaron Swartz as a founder
Did you know that other countries have grocery stores too?

> People have always flocked to America for opportunity, and if we cut welfare so we can expand immigration again, I guarantee there will be another giant influx.

And how are welfare and immigration related?

3131s··on “Fungi Can Teach Us a New Way of Looking at the World”
Did you move far enough to the right that you'll be putting yourself in prison soon for that drug offense?
3131s··on “Fungi Can Teach Us a New Way of Looking at the World”
True, I ended up throwing about $500 from the top of a building on one mushroom trip...
3131s··on Ask HN: How is Trump testing positive for Coronavirus not on the frontpage?
You will see how much longer your bubble will last if the next few months play out wrong.
3131s··on Ask HN: How is Trump testing positive for Coronavirus not on the frontpage?
Of course we don't actually know that, but from what little the HN mods have indicated that appears to be at least part of the algorithm.

But moderators do sometimes manually save a thread from being flagged dead, which apparently they chose not to do in this case.

3131s··on United States vs. Dread Pirate Roberts (Silk Road) FBI Report (2013) [pdf]
> certainly enabling these things to be trafficked does not provide net positive to the world.

Yes, it does, because the alternative is the moronic drug war strategy that's been followed for the last 50 years.

3131s··on Firefox's JIT is getting significantly faster
What? How does limiting TLDs to only .com make any sense and how does that help with transcending national boundaries? I'm no fan of how new TLDs have been rolled out either...

Take a look at the Public Suffix List because you'll need to do away with a lot of TLDs.

3131s··on US military increasingly using drone missile with flying blades in Syria
They’re certainly bothering people and threatening peoples’ freedom.

All of them? What percentage of the dead were terrorists? Because "they" in this case is referring to around 1 million people now.

3131s··on What Is a Minimally Good Life?
You need some perspective on this. A solid half of the world has so little money that these people routinely die from easily preventable conditions.
3131s··on California to Require All New Vehicles Be Zero-Emission by 2035
There were a few pro-nuclear candidates this time around among the Democrats, but none of the prominent ones.
3131s··on They're deleting my channel, but they don't know why? [video]
Depends on your hosting provider with Outlook still right? I run a mail server on Linode and I had thought that Microsoft was still blocking all their IPs.
3131s··on Wikipedia is getting a new look
Right, I did not like this change at all...

I use the langlinks across many languages, way more so than the average user so my use case is different.

3131s··on Dream Vendor "Canna_Bars" Sentenced to Prison
That's called stylometry and it can be surprisingly accurate under the right conditions.
3131s··on Vue.js 3
I made a minesweeper clone in JS and CSS, it's not as hard as you'd think and just a few hundred lines of code. I still want to attempt a multiplayer minesweeper, which might benefit more from something like Vue.

A dashboard is usually for me the primary use case for one of these reactive frameworks.

3131s··on Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died
I don't have a link but I know it's happened in a few other HN comment sections.

Of course we have no clue as to how HN's algorithm works and what they do to mitigate manipulation on this platform. I definitely notice corporate spam on certain topics from time to time.

3131s··on Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died
If you are not an American it's hard to understand the extent to which there is a cultural vortex where everything around you feels manufactured.

I left seven years ago and now live in a terrible third-world dictatorship actually. It's not that America is so bad to live in (if you have some money), but that things should be much better for young people especially and the justifications for why it can't be better are so deeply warped.

3131s··on How can we, as web professionals, help to make the web more energy efficient?
Only a small percentage of US beef production is grass fed and worldwide grazing systems supply about 9 percent of the world's production of beef, the rest are crop fed in addition!

3131s··on How can we, as web professionals, help to make the web more energy efficient?
What you are missing is that a lot of land is used to grow feed for animals too.

Grazing systems supply about 9 percent of the world's production of beef, the rest are crop fed in addition!

3131s··on Spotify reportedly fighting with employees about hosting episodes of Joe Rogan
You are missing the point.
3131s··on FB to curb internal debate over sensitive issues amid employee discord
> abdicating my moral precepts

Sounds like there's nothing left to abdicate.

3131s··on Tell HN: Never search for domains on Godaddy.com
I've been on Namecheap for 7-8 years and while I am satisfied, I have to say that Namecheap's search interface is unusably broken.

It's been so bad for a few years that I've actually wondered if it's a sign of decline at the company... if you want very specific complaints about the UI I am happy to elaborate.

3131s··on Mozilla Is Crowdsourcing Research into YouTube Recommendations
Those don't do shit. I tried getting it to stop recommending me fucking Jordan Peterson and Ben Shapiro videos for years, but I guess I just can't escape the angry 30-something category.

I think Youtube's recommendation algorithm is an abomination that has caused real harm to society.

3131s··on What's so hard about PDF text extraction?
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/as_in
3131s··on Why ‘Civilization’ is a political masterpiece
I always liked Alpha Centauri the most out of all these games.

I don't think it has any of these problems except for maybe the last (you can automate most repetitive actions, but the control is somewhat too coarse).

3131s··on Ask HN: Natural language processing to identify grammar in a text?
Check out UDify for dependency parsing with universal parts of speech and features.
