3131s··on Seeing red: Why cars are killing more people
>You're overthinking this.

The parent commenter only reposted the text from the article.

3131s··on Ask HN: What have you automated that saved you a ton of time?
Good idea! I recently identified this as one of the huge obstacles in my workflow and now I am looking for options to save and manage my sessions in Linux / i3.

So far i3-resurrect looks promising, anybody else have suggestions?

3131s··on A Walk in Hong Kong
This idea that "saving face" is uniquely central to Asian cultures is complete nonsense. It's a common metaphor in Asian languages, that's it -- the desire to avoid embarrassment is an absolutely universal human trait.
3131s··on The Case Against Octopus Farming
You sound a lot like me before I went vegetarian a few years back. I was always aware of the cognitive dissonance, knowing that I couldn't reconcile eating meat with my other values.
3131s··on 8chan goes dark after hardware provider discontinues service
I mean this seriously, more Americans should see what those ISIS videos are like.

More Americans should read the writings of Osama bin Laden too.

It's not that this material isn't horrendous, but it's very different from what you'd expect -- the people behind it are not dumb, and like all good propaganda the rationale is selectively built on compelling facts.

3131s··on Why Americans Don’t Like Jazz (2003)
> there have not been any groundbreaking new jazz artists in the last 30 years.

Speaking of ignorance...

> [rap] literally incorporates and uses so much jazz.

It incorporates a lot of jazz via sampling, but otherwise unless we're talking about freestyling then it's missing the central component of jazz.

3131s··on Why did we wait so long for the bicycle?
I bike everyday in a large city in south east Asia and I would be dead a long time ago if I had been riding a recumbent bicycle.
3131s··on A Navy veteran refused to accept a ‘no’ to his battery invention
It's unbelievable how bad the editing in this article is. I barely skimmed this and came across four typos.
3131s··on Why Nadal is unbeatable on clay
It's all in the spin, and to a lesser extent Nadal's speed and mobility on clay. A high RPM top spin shot will kick forward and bounce high on clay to a greater extent than on a hard court, and it's extremely hard to deal with.

I have hit with some pro tour players on clay, once even a former world #1 player, and it's near impossible to play offensively against their spin unless you want to take every ball on the rise.

Also Nadal's flat serve is probably the weakest of the 3 greats, but the importance of a good flat serve is somewhat de-emphasized on clay.

3131s··on Why Nadal is unbeatable on clay
Not in Nadal's prime, but maybe now.

The primary reason is that Nadal simply generates more topspin, which has been known for a long time, and the spin of the ball has more impact on a clay court. Nadal's grip is "full western" while Federer and Djokovic both have more traditional forehand grips.

3131s··on Data scientists shouldn't use Upwork
The best athletes are extremely intelligent and driven people. The over-representation of black people in athletics is most definitely related to their under-representation in other fields.
3131s··on Insect Apocalypse German Bug Watchers Sound Alarm
Species loss is irreversible though.
3131s··on Too Many Companies Drain Value from the Economy
Thank you for that, I have said exactly the same thing many times.
3131s··on China has a new casino: the Philippines
It really depends on what is being called "infrastructure" and how much the local government is extracting from the foreign governments that will benefit (and if those funds are redistributed to the benefit of the people obviously too).
3131s··on China has a new casino: the Philippines
The roads are bad everywhere. There's really nothing resembling a highway in the entire country despite the massive development happening in Phnom Penh too. Tons of people die in road accidents because semi trucks, construction vehicles, buses, cars, motos, bicycles, pedestrians and animals all share the two lane "national roads". I have personally seen a lot of dead or dying people on the road here unfortunately.
3131s··on China has a new casino: the Philippines
Since I live in Cambodia I'm not sure, but how much awareness is there elsewhere about the recent building collapse in Sihanoukville? I saw the BBC wrote some articles:

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-48729072

There are some shoddy-looking construction sites in Phnom Penh too, and precarious conditions for construction workers even on the more modern construction projects.

3131s··on U.S. Escalates Online Attacks on Russia’s Power Grid
They are not wrong unfortunately, just unaware of Trump's own complicity in the war machine.
3131s··on The average person’s reading speed is slower than commonly thought
> Although the number of studies involving non-English languages was too small to draw any firm conclusions, there seemed to be a hint of differences between languages. For example, reading rate in the five Spanish studies was considerably faster than the average, at 278 wpm, while the average rate for the 144 English-only studies was 236 wpm.

It really doesn't make sense to compare wpm across languages.

3131s··on Seattle has stopped charging people for personal drug possession
> we already have laws against that... it's already illegal to litter and it's already illegal to threaten people. if it's not already, it should be illegal to leave dirty needles around.

Perfectly said. It's amazing how often this train of thought derails the discussion about drug legalization.

3131s··on Seattle has stopped charging people for personal drug possession
Well, it would be second hand crack vapor, which I really doubt would have any effect on others at all. Cocaine in small receational doses really isn't that harmful to begin with, let alone second hand microdoses. And what if I don't want your second hand gasoline fumes? I don't want or own a car, why should you get to drive one around in public? I absolutely guarantee you that your exhaust fumes are worse for my health than my second hand crack vapor is for your health.
3131s··on Seattle has stopped charging people for personal drug possession
Arrest me on the basis of my resultant behavior then, if it necessitates that. Have you ever smoked crack? I have, a lot! What consequences? What behavior are you expecting from me?
3131s··on Seattle has stopped charging people for personal drug possession
The point is that what people find to be "socially unacceptable" in public is totally arbitrary.

Why do you all really care if I smoke crack in public?

3131s··on Power Is Overrated
Apparently Nietzsche, given the mention of "will to power". But yeah, that's a confusing one.
3131s··on Nets on the outlets of drainage pipes save waterways from pollution
Exactly what I thought first too.
3131s··on Netflix Saves Kids from Up to 400 Hours of Commercials a Year
They compulsively flick through videos and later vent their pent up energy through temper tantrums. I tutor a 3 year old boy for an ultra rich family, he's essentially raised by his nannies who let him do whatever he wants. Observing him using a tablet is pretty shocking, it's total zombie mode watching Elsa and Spiderman videos 15 seconds at a time before skipping to the next.
3131s··on Adults learn language to fluency nearly as well as children: study
Look up the "conditioned head turn procedure" as a means of testing phonetic perception in infants. It is pretty well established that infants have a much greater ability to distinguish phonemes compared to adults.

What you said is true the other way around too. Infants can't look something up in a dictionary, or ask a bilingual person to clarify the finer points of a word or phrase in a language they already know. Infants aren't just learning the language but also the concepts behind the language, which would seem to make what they're doing more exceptional than adult language learning.

3131s··on Urban trees 'live fast, die young' compared to those in rural forests
Trees benefit from being around other trees, for example by passing nutrients through their root systems, signalling chemically to warn of threats, sharing beneficial fungi, and being shielded from the elements. It's definitely no surprise that urban trees don't fare as well.
3131s··on What Uber Left Behind in Asia
Grab is getting bigger in Cambodia, but PassApp still has a bit more name recognition since they were here first.
3131s··on Facebook Bans Louis Farrakhan, Milo Yiannopoulos, InfoWars and Others
Because Iraq bombed us? When did that happen?
3131s··on Facebook Bans Louis Farrakhan, Milo Yiannopoulos, InfoWars and Others
I don't know what "inside job" means to everyone here, but it's pretty clear that elements of the Bush administration had foreknowledge of the 9/11 attacks.
