2dvisio··on Gene therapy restored hearing in deaf patients
In the UK, Newborn hearing screening (https://www.nhs.uk/baby/newborn-screening/hearing-test/) is a mandatory test that happens in the first weeks of life.

Genomics-driven diagnosis of several (treatable) conditions is not science fiction anymore, but requires support from governments and national health systems. The technology is there, and can be scaled up.

With studies like this: https://www.genomicsengland.co.uk/initiatives/newborns

2dvisio··on The Rise of the Japanese Toilet
Or commonly referred to as “bum guns” in the UK. We have three toilets in our house and have one in each. They’re so good I can’t even explain. I find it so inconvenient whenever I travel that these don’t come with every toilet.
2dvisio··on Getting a paper accepted
There’s tons of extra work in double blind (for the author mostly, but also for peer reviewers and editors/chairs). Speaking from direct experience as author, reviewer, and chair at conferences. And generally the benefit is totally lost as you can easily circumvent it especially if you have already published in the field by just citing your previous work.
2dvisio··on DoorDash to acquire Deliveroo
Not my experience in London. In any zone that is not Zone 1-2, or other Deliveroo hot spots, my experience has always been not great with times that do reach also the 45 minutes to 1h for food delivery. We still do it occasionally _because we are lazy_.

However, we did draw some lines as some foods are not enjoyable in case one of those long wait times happens (e.g. pizza, burger, cooked meat dishes, etc).

2dvisio··on Apple shuffles AI executive ranks in bid to turn around Siri
I had to try to believe and I'm baffled.
2dvisio··on A look at the creative process behind Bluey and Cocomelon (2024)
Agree that Ms Rachel has same effect but with the difference that it teaches kids something.
2dvisio··on A look at the creative process behind Bluey and Cocomelon (2024)
Our son has profound hearing loss and he wears Cochlear implants, and I remember very fondly the time we were hooked on Ms Rachel.

She is great and lots of her videos are a blessing for parents with children with hearing impairment as she uses lots of techniques that our Speech and Language therapist used to teach us.

2dvisio··on Microsoft unveils Majorana 1 quantum processor
This is the reason why is called like that. Is pronounced Ma-y-orana

2dvisio··on We're bringing Pebble back
My pebble (my wife’s pebble that she never wore) has lost some of its plastic cover a while ago (wear and tear) and won’t turn on anymore. Truly looking forward to this project succeeding in its intent!
2dvisio··on Inside the university AI cheating crisis
As ex Oxford academic tutor in a college, I was never asked to assess for plagiarism, but this was a time of 1:3 (max) tutorials, very easy to identify students not putting the effort or struggling.

However, as scientific writer and conference/journal reviewer I once spotted a plagiarism using the crude detector (I believe it was Turnitin) embedded in one of the ACM portals we used to use for conferences. The “bad luck” of the submitter was they had plagiarised by copy paste 100% of one of my previous papers :’)

2dvisio··on Show HN: FastGraphRAG – Better RAG using good old PageRank
Looking forward to someone adapting this for Obsidian and other similar tools. As a low-effort user of Obsidian I would love to reap the benefits of appropriate knowledge graphs, but don't want to put that much effort into creating one myself.
2dvisio··on 20 years of Google Scholar
20 years and still no API. In my past as an academic I've tried several times to build systems to depend on Scholar and was always taken aback by the lack of an API. I get it was not to be swallowed whole by other publishers etc, but that has reduced the potential of the product.
2dvisio··on The cochlear implant question
Sure. Thanks for having contacted me.
2dvisio··on The cochlear implant question
The internal part can be replaced too.

The gain you get from implanting as soon as possible is massive compared to waiting it off. No one truly considering it should be waiting and instead actually pushing for an implant as soon as possible.

For our son, in the UK in 2019, they asked us to wait until our son was one year old. We insisted to have him implanted as soon as possible and us being ready to do it at 6 months (possible already in US). We managed to do at 7 months only switching surgeon to a much younger and keen surgeon that was pushing to lower the implantable age in children on the back of the massive benefits gained and very similar complication rate as close age brackets.

Our son is currently in mainstream school and doing brilliantly.

2dvisio··on Show HN: A Website for Comparing Protein Powder Prices
Great idea. Whish this was also expanded to the UK, have exactly the same exact problem here. I keep looking at prices on Amazon and have managed to snatch a few great deals in the past, but having something like this would make it an effortless shopping
2dvisio··on Olivetti Programma 101: At the Origins of the Personal Computer
Still have one of those tucked away at my father’s place. He used to use it at the beginning of his career to run calculations for engineering structural computations before Acca and other similar softwares (in Italy due to very active seismic activity you need to run these sorts of calculations also for very small structures).
2dvisio··on Divers discover Roman mosaic
Most likely raise of sea level? Anecdotally, I am originally from the south of Italy and at different stages both my father and grandfather mentioned to me that the seashore was much further away than the current one with the one my father recalled midway between the one my grand father remembered and the one we have now.
2dvisio··on Italy's Sun Motorway (2021)
For those interested in the relationship between humans, their supporting infrastructure (not just highways, but also the cities and everything around those), and nature specifically from a perspective of the Autostrada del Mediterraneo: I can suggest this book: www.store.rubbettinoeditore.it/catalogo/presente-infinito/ which tries (just visually through photos) to demonstrate that complicated and precarious relationship.
2dvisio··on AirPods Causing Tinnitus?
I was very curious as this has now happened to me directly (which led me to search the web in the first instance). My current situation is tinnitus has severely increased. And it is much worse if I wear the AirPods (though in this case I can't objectively say/measure any potential bias I might now have after seeing the page).
2dvisio··on 3M executives convinced a scientist forever chemicals in human blood were safe
I live in the UK and PFOAs have showed up in testing around the area we live in. At 14.5ng/l, they already exceed the safety level in US and EU, 10ng/l. However the threshold level in water in the UK is 100ng/l so :politician-shrugging:
2dvisio··on Deaf girl is cured in world first gene therapy trial
You are lucky to know ahead of time about your respective mutations. We didn’t (no family history and both asymptomatic carriers) and my son was born bilateral profoundly deaf (connexin 26). We have chosen the path of cochlear implant (which is an amazing technology). We are both looking forward to seeing advancements in therapies for GJB2 mutations sparing many parents (and children) what we have been through. However, corrective therapy for GJB2 might require much earlier discovery of the issue and earlier administration I believe, as usually those variants affect actual physical growth of hair cells in the cochlea.
2dvisio··on Show HN: Balancing game for the mobile browser with increasing difficulty
Came here to say the same. Also one can combine that with extreme tilts to accelerate massively and win easily
2dvisio··on Meta Llama 3
Tried with Italian and it seems to work but always appends the following disclaimer:

«I am still improving my command of non-English languages, and I may make errors while attempting them. I will be most useful to you if I can assist you in English.»

2dvisio··on Show HN: macOS Reminder Sync for Obsidian Tasks
Is this also available via dmg offline install?
2dvisio··on Why diets backfire: A year after weight loss, the desire to eat grows (2018)
Remind me of interesting research we did as a postdoc. Weight loss (and also maintenance) are generally better when clustering different strategies: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30096203/
2dvisio··on Pooled number of deaths by age group in EU
Anybody who knows why there might have been a 10-fold increase of excess deaths in the 0-14 years group (as seen in the cumulative plots) right at the beginning of 2024 compared with other years?
2dvisio··on Fossil is quitting smartwatches
Ex owner of a Pebble (which was fantastic). Have tested (for work) a variety of watches and health trackers, loved the Apple ones and the Fitbit watches, but ultimately the Withings ones were the ones that stuck. Battery life, minimalistic look and core functionalities are the best.

Also own a fossil (gift from wife recently) but whenever I can I always use my reliable and less power hungry Withings Scanwatch

2dvisio··on 23andMe confirms hackers stole ancestry data on 6.9M users
And still no communication from 23andme for those that could have been affected. Just a prompt about changing your password.
2dvisio··on Be My Eyes’ AI assistant starts rolling out
Agree with other comments. The company has been providing real tangible value to its users via a very dense network of volunteers. I know that because my wife has been using it (as volunteer) and helping people very frequently. I hope this experiment with AI is successful for them.
2dvisio··on The Le Guin Precepts
At the theatre school my son goes on weekend they have the “think” principle.

Is it True Is it Helpful Is it Inspiring Is it Necessary Is it Kind
