2devnull··on Faculty group calls on Yale to make teaching 'distinct from activism'
I guess it’s only common knowledge for people who read book reviews.
2devnull··on Faculty group calls on Yale to make teaching 'distinct from activism'
Listen to the recent pinker mearsheimer debate. Pinker would be a good person to advocate for the triumph of enlightenment values and where else would those values be most evident than the academy, and yet Jewish students are made to cower in fear at the student mobs tolerated, if not in effect manufactured by the educators at the nations’ highest institutions, Harvard, Penn, MIT… I know people who were in forced out of grad school for not engaging in activism, let alone committing the ultimate sin, having heterodox views. Perhaps that’s less common in STEM, where politics are non-essential, but it’s de rigeur in social sciences and I’d imagine much of the humanities. It’s common knowledge in many circles that you’ll get different education at Claremont vs berkeley.
2devnull··on Faculty group calls on Yale to make teaching 'distinct from activism'
Mentioned in the article, maybe. But it’s common knowledge that most faculty today are de facto activists, they just done self identify as such usually.
2devnull··on Let me clear a huge misunderstanding
Worse? It’s more direct.
2devnull··on How to make your anger work for you
Did vox used to be better? I think anger is like flatulence. You can talk a lot about it but at the end of the day it’s just a bunch of hot air. “Make your flatulence work for you.” Odd.
2devnull··on Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood?
“suppose some of us just aren't capable of believing.”

That’s such an obvious fallacy, you should do yourself a favor and introspect how such an absurd idea came into your head. Who put it there?

To see it’s absurd, consider, have you ever changed your mind about something? If yes, then it’s obviously possible and maybe even likely that you can and will one day change your views on divinity? If course it’s possible, and actually quite common. And yes, it comes as a surprise.

2devnull··on The surreal life of a professional bridesmaid
Interesting comment. By what mechanisms would you suggest the disappearing is being carried out by the State? The State is threatened by power, obviously love and friendship are powerful things, but there aren’t in actuality any political efforts that are overtly targeting male friendships that I can think of. Maybe fbi infiltration of men’s rights groups and boys clubs like proudboys, MS13 and the freemasons?
2devnull··on The Triumph and Terror of Wang Huning
“ modern Chinese experts on America are just repeating what the American media says about the country.”

There is no American media. There’s leftist American media and rightest American media. I’m guessing Chinese experts (who are leftists) cite leftist American media, not the Epoch Times.

2devnull··on Mozilla names new CEO as it pivots to data privacy
There has never been real communism so how could anybody hope to know what is? Literally.
2devnull··on Pakistan cuts off phone and internet services on election day
How else to prevent misinformation?
2devnull··on TSMC to build second Japan chip factory
Why focus on youth employment? Not that I disagree China economy is the toilet. But I do think they have a more nimble economy that can turn around quicker.

If your thesis is that world manufacturing is leaving China to return (primarily) to the US that seems unlikely. More likely it will move to places like Africa and South America, no? We would expect that to happen as China economy transitions and they become the dominant world super power.

2devnull··on TSMC to build second Japan chip factory
Without any source information it may as well be written in crayon. (No offense. At least op provided something to back their claim.)
2devnull··on Toyota to invest $1.3B in Kentucky factory to build battery packs and new EV
Agree that often politicians sell out their people and natural resources (the rights and endowment of future citizens) for short term gain. This is a natural consequence of politicians being inherently terrible people by and large.
2devnull··on SQL for data scientists in 100 queries
I remember when it was a pejorative, literally.

Be careful who you tease on the internet or you may become a toad.
2devnull··on A Lawyer Explains How He Beat Elon Musk
Zero mention of hunter Biden’s self proclaimed influence over “every single member” of the Deleware chancery court. Seems like a notable omission in the reporting here.
2devnull··on Limitarianism: The Case Against Extreme Wealth
I’m not extremely wealthy so can’t spend 20 pounds on this but I imagine I would agree with the moral argument for limiting wealth. But the details make the whole discussion seem like an absurd waste of intellect.

Please, just name the people who you want to “wealth limit” and explain how you will go about it. Specifically address the obvious problem: wealth gets distributed across families and other groups in such a way as to make it impossible to even count let alone try to limit. If it could be done, it would have been done. Digital currency shouldn’t be the impetus to relearn governance mistakes of the past.

Once you understand the problem is not a should or shouldn’t problem, but a how is it possible to problem you quickly realize the answer is more individual freedom.

2devnull··on 'Stupid,' 'shameful:' Tech workers on Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan's rant
The wiki article is incoherent or at least not easy to sustain motivation enough to finish reading. I think the California ideology they seem to be hinting at can be better thought of as “luxury beliefs” the sort of which Ron Henderson writes a lot about. California is resource rich, historically. Historically this leads to growth and what I would call “messy progress.” It’s definitely gotten messier as growth surged in recent decades due largely to selfish policies that result from its very open (for better and surely for worse) political system.

The world has givers and takers. Givers know they are givers.
2devnull··on FDA says 561 deaths tied to recalled Philips sleep apnea machines
Sleep apnea is mostly a grift. Doctors go along with it because they don’t really care for obese people. It’s pretty scandalous if you look into it. The sleep apnea industry exists to sell machines first and foremost. Very little science involved.
2devnull··on Thanksgiving 2023 security incident
If you use your phone at work, doesn’t that then become discoverable in the legal sense?
2devnull··on Thanksgiving 2023 security incident
There is no way around that restriction either.

HR forms require personal information and do not allow anyone to access from anything but a corporate device.
2devnull··on My favourite Git commit (2019)
Big fan of the straussian commit message/commentary style. You read it once and think you understand, but you come back to it much later and understand it in a second, deeper way. There’s an art to this that some people seem to have. Maybe it correlates to taste.

What’s to stop the government from taking your business from you for national security reasons?
2devnull··on Mistral CEO confirms 'leak' of new open source AI model nearing GPT4 performance
People really abuse this term. Like using “natural” to market stuff. But arsenic is “all natural”! It’s “open source” so it must be beneficial. “rm -rf c” is “open source” too
2devnull··on Fighting Infomania: Why 80% of Your Reading Is a Waste of Time (2016)
Read “infomania” as insomnia and skimmed the whole damn thing (or 80% if it) before figuring out this didn’t have the cure for insomnia (unless it’s caused by infomania, which is plausible).
2devnull··on Ask HN: Any good Silicon Valley Photo coffee table books?
The book would be short. The “me generation” takes control, zeroes interest rates after they crash the world economy in 2008. Roll the clock forward 10 years, nimbyism plus importing cheap labor and allowing the housing market to be used as a Ponzi scheme because who cares about younger generations as long as the children of the 60s can buy vanity wineries, and all own multi-million dollar homes, drive corvettes or whatever Biden is ridin.
2devnull··on Patients say keto helps with mental illness. Science is racing to understand why
You’ll eventually lower your caloric intake on a keto diet the same way most people over consume calories in a carb heavy diet. It’s just a side effect of decreased food cravings and the obstacles inherent to the diet. You get sick of avacado and coconut oil pretty quickly if it’s all you get to eat. Calorie counting is a fiction mostly.
2devnull··on Patients say keto helps with mental illness. Science is racing to understand why
People who drink dairy are probably not in keto. Dairy has a ton of sugar.
