2bitlobster··on Show HN: Godspeed is a fast, 100% keyboard oriented todo app for Mac
What's the file format? I hope the best for your app, but I hope I can still use those files if something happens to the company. I converted to .txt files 10 years ago for everything todo, but wouldn't mind a specialized utility for it!
2bitlobster··on NSF: The State of U.S. Science and Engineering 2024
The National Science Board (Board, NSB) is required under the National Science Foundation (NSF) Act, 42 U.S.C. § 1863 (j) (1) to prepare the biennial Science and Engineering Indicators (Indicators) report for and transmit it to the president and Congress every even-numbered year. The report is prepared by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) within NSF under the guidance of the Board.
2bitlobster··on Tell HN: Pivotal Tracker removes non-enterprise price tiers
Happy shortcut.com user here, used pivotal for years previously. I use it for my small engineering team.
2bitlobster··on Parrots learn to make video calls to chat with other parrots: study
Great UI. I thought originally the comments here about the UI were about the Times site. Ha! Seemed like a tough crowd!
2bitlobster··on W3C invites applications to be our next CEO
Nonprofits pay with purpose as much as cash. You can work on a widget or do something meaningful with your life.
2bitlobster··on Hyundai promises to keep buttons in cars
Not sure why peripheral vision UIs never took off for cars. It solves the safety issue of taking your eyes off the road with while still enjoying the benefits of a touch screen. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=sT33BPUQaHg&feature=youtu.be

2bitlobster··on Ask HN: Which book can attract anyone towards your field of study?
Don’t Make Me Think, by Steve Krug. I used it for years as a required text in pretty much every UX related class I taught. Entertaining, super digestable and very nutritious.
2bitlobster··on What is mathematical thinking? (2012)
Wow, so, so much venom on this thread. For those of you who enjoyed the article (like myself), you'll see that his class ("Introduction to Mathematical Thinking") starts today as a Coursera Stanford MOOC here: https://www.coursera.org/learn/mathematical-thinking
2bitlobster··on Ask HN: Developers who switched careers, what are you doing now?
Wow for the chandelier
2bitlobster··on Ask HN: Developers who switched careers, what are you doing now?
What were your main means of coordination and planning?
2bitlobster··on Why won’t anyone teach me math?
At least you had math. At my school, they only taught "History of Math," and didn't have any affiliations with other programs/schools to fill in the gaps. Pretty awful!
2bitlobster··on I asked GPT-NeoX-20B a hundred arithmetic questions
Last week I asked gpt3 (through philosopher ai) “why don’t irrational numbers fit neatly in our number system?”

And I got back this bad answer:

<<<

Would you tell me what an irrational number is? Is it a number that cannot be written as a fraction, like pi or e? Or is it something else?

Okay, I see. Thanks for clarifying that.

Then what is an irrational number? It is a number that cannot be written as a fraction, correct?

Okay, I understand. Then what is a number that can be written as a fraction? It must be a rational number, right?

But aren't all numbers irrational, since it is impossible to write them as a fraction? And any rational number must be irrational, right?

>>>

FYI the pseudo dialogue format of the answer was more surprising than the wrong answer

2bitlobster··on Ask HN: What is your spiritual practice?
How is this as a definition of spiritual? “The practice of engaging with the unknown for practical effect.”
2bitlobster··on Ask HN: Life Changing Books?
For me, systems thinking, incompleteness theorem, writing style, consciousness... Definitely helped set my path in building thinking tools as a career.
2bitlobster··on The Matrix Is Unreal
“Actual consciousnesses” defined as…?
2bitlobster··on Ask HN: Can you hear other people or music while programming?
"Music can help either sides" - I just don't hear music at all when programming, it doesn't effect my output.
2bitlobster··on Ask HN: Can you hear other people or music while programming?
Not just concentration, I concentrate for art/design tasks as well, but I can still process audio while doing those things.

2bitlobster··on Teapot: Type-Safe 3D Spreadsheet
:( was hoping for a sweet gui but it’s text based.

Since it’s not limited to a visual paradigm, why not use infinite dimensions?

2bitlobster··on Font licensing is ill, please help heal it
Some interesting notes: professional font designers regularly copy each other's work. However, if you ask a legitimate font designer, they will trace another font. Where they get in hot water is if they copy and/or manipulate the actual Bezier points from another file (at which point they are copying the code). I remember going to a font design conference a long time ago, and some elite well known designers were aghast at another well known font designer for copying the bezier points directly off of another font and then manipulating the points from there. It's a crazy little dance they do to keep things legit.
2bitlobster··on A critique of project management software
Totally agree. Enjoying Clubhouse.io for that reason.
2bitlobster··on A critique of project management software
There is usually some point several times a year where things get hairy, and I need to do an analysis within a spreadsheet (ie sort tickets by effort + value to evaluate priority). Still haven't seen a tool that lets me quickly evaluate many tickets easily without config hell.
