293984j29384··on LG washing machine sending 3.7GB of data a day
I have a LG washing machine and LG dryer that are wifi connected. I keep 90 days of netflow data. Both have used about 10mb total over the last 90 days, 100% on port 8883 tcp back to AWS EC2 owned IP addresses. Typically less than 100kb/day with a high of 2mb/day and a low of 12kb/day.

Looking at the calendar, this corresponds to days we ran loads vs idle no use days. I'm okay with this level of data usage.

I use MagicMirror to do this. It's a great piece of software. I'm a bit shocked nobody has mentioned this yet. https://magicmirror.builders/
293984j29384··on Reddit appears to be restoring edited/deleted comments
I can confirm a comment I made in r/vmware has been restored. I typically delete my comments after 24 hours. I have a single comment from 20 days ago that was previously deleted now back on my profile.
293984j29384··on Better cognitive ability from less snacking of processed carbohydrates
Feel free to Google additional examples, there are plenty. The link below only analyzes a single video by Dr. Greger and finds it riddled with errors, mistakes and what I would consider outright lies. Many of the studies quoted as "evidence" are either flawed, incomplete, or simply misrepresented by Greger to fit his prefered narrative. I'm actually a believer in plant based diets but this guy is a modern day snake oil salesman.

293984j29384··on Better cognitive ability from less snacking of processed carbohydrates
I disagree. nutritionfacts.org is a biased site that has been created by a vegan doctor who built his entire career on paid speaking about vegan pseudoscience. Several of the claims made by him have been debunked by independent sources.
293984j29384··on Six charged in mass takedown of DDoS-for-hire sites
I don't think you understand the article. This is regular people who are paying for access to these services. None of these people have any interest in launching their own attacks, they want to input an IP on a webpage and click "go".
293984j29384··on Tell HN: IPv6-only still pretty much unusable
While I don't have any factual proof to refute your statements, in my personal experience almost every organization uses NAT & RFC1918 address space. The only client I can think of in my 20 years of experience that used a public IPv4 per VM/machine was the DoD, specifically, the U.S. Army.

From your very last statement, I think you've confused self hosting (like buying a VPS from Digital Ocean and hosting your own blag) and how the real world works (like going to Dell.com and ordering a new laptop). "The mainframe" these days is almost always behind a L4/L7 load balancer or other network device and very rarely directly addressable.

293984j29384··on System.css: A design system for building retro Apple interfaces
This is great.
293984j29384··on It's not acceptable that Google does not offer support to users
For e-mail, I can't recommend migadu.com enough. Great plans, very reasonable prices. The interface is a little clunky but you get used to it.
293984j29384··on Dartmouth Eliminates Student Loans for Undergraduates
As a NYC resident, it always makes me sad to see hard caps on income limits that don't take into account any type of COL or locality. As a family, we bring in around 300k/year but after rent in a modest 2BD Manhattan apartment, child care, essentials and everything else a family needs, we have very little "extra" spending money. I'm not trying to make an argument that we're the equivalent of a family making 60k/year but it seems like an argument could be made that we shouldn't punish people who live in high COL areas with high salaries but low disposable incomes.
293984j29384··on Yacht – A web interface for managing Docker containers
The lack of screenshots or useful videos other than the tiny video that can't be controlled on the doc page is poor web design. If you want people to use your GUI tool, they need to be able to see it first.
293984j29384··on A PCIe network interface card that adds full router capabilities to your servers
I'm not sure where the confusion is. OP mentioned that his Linux system can already do routing. The purpose of this card is to remove that load from the computer. The manufacture suggests it can do up to 100Gbps which isn't trivial.
293984j29384··on Apple AirTags draining battery of devices close by
I disagree with your concept of consent. You clearly accepted Apple's ToS when you configured your phone. I'm sure buried somewhere in there is a line about this. You also consented by simply buying their product. When it comes to Apple or Google's ecosystem you aren't ordering off the menu, you're eating at the buffet.

The solution seems very clear and simple to me. If you want finer grain control of your device, don't buy an Apple or Android device. There are plenty of alternatives.

293984j29384··on Show HN: Should I Get a House? a better rent vs. buy calculator
Why would you assume it's to rent a house? It's a great time to be an apartment renter in big markets like NYC. I just got 2 months free on my lease renewal and I've seen even better deals out there but I didn't want to move.
293984j29384··on pfSense CE 2.5.2
I'm not a PHP programmer so I can't assess the quality of the code myself but do we know objectively that OPNSense's PHP is better than pfSense? That seems like a big assumption that just because it's been rewritten it's more secure or "better"
293984j29384··on Nano 5.7
I never understood the hate Nano gets from vi users. Nano does many things quicker and easier than vi. For example, search & replace. Would I code in Nano? No. Do I use Nano to edit configuration files and make other small edits? Absolutely.
293984j29384··on WRT54G History: The Router That Accidentally Went Open Source
I treat it as prosumer grade equipment. I use it at home but not at the office. My general rule of thumb is if I need it to make money, it's not going to be Ubiquiti.

293984j29384··on How Discord Won
I think we might have different definitions of competition. As of July 2020, Discord had over 100-million monthly users. At last count, netsplit.de reports 360k IRC "users". That's not even 1% of the Discord user base and it's shrinking every year. No new significant IRC communities have emerged in at least a decade because it's a dying protocol while Discord adds millions of users every month. Yes, IRC is an alternative to Discord but it's not a competitor (to Discord, or any other protocol) by any stretch of the imagination.
293984j29384··on Creating a Home IPv6 Network
Web-based tracking is done via browser fingerprinting and cookies. IP addresses aren't reliable due to NAT and organizational proxies.
293984j29384··on We Don’t Like Our Underground House
It seems like it'd be much much easier to build above ground with adequate sound proofing or even just remoteness, neither of which are very expensive when contrasted with building underground.
293984j29384··on FreeBSD 12.2-BETA1
I absolutely agree. I run FreeBSD on my NAS to take advantage of ZFS but every time I update it I have to Google the process or find my notes since it's incredibly non-intuitive.

293984j29384··on The War on Upstart Fiber Internet Providers
A wireless mesh network is not an alternative to fiber based internet. It's a great idea and has many useful applications but it's slow. Loop Internet sells symmetrical gigabit for $65/month. The laser receiver on the top of your building (NYC Mesh has been known to use a Ubiquiti LiteBeam AC Gen2) typically has less than 350-450 Mbps of bandwidth total and that's for the entire building to share. I have 30~ units in my building. How well is that mesh networking going to scale? Is it better than say, dial-up? Sure. Is it better than basically any other type of broadband? No.
