238475235243··on Preliminary Assessment: Unidentified Aerial Phenomena
Where to begin?

1) This isn't a recent phenomena. People have been seeing discs in the sky for literally thousands of years.

2) Aircraft can't make 90 degree turns or descend from 80,000 feet to the deck approximately instantly.

3) Groups of extremely highly trained military pilots have seen them, and the video and IR data has been released from these encounters. You can't make 4 people in 2 aircraft hallucinate at the same time, and fool all the instrumentation on them (radar, IR...) and also fool the battlespace radars on the cruisers directing them. And if you could, that too would be kind of interesting to look at whatever that is.

You're repeating old points you don't understand because as you acknowledge, you don't know the subject. Please start with Vallee.

The only thing they left out was swamp gas as a possible explanation (RIP Hynek).

Seems like another whitewash, "it can't possibly be happening" report.

If you spend some serious effort on this and stay away from the crazies you'll come to the opposite conclusion of this report. A good starting point is Vallee's books.

238475235243··on Europe is now a corporate also-ran. Can it recover its footing?
Your understanding of tech work in the US is basically wrong in every way, and sounds like you're parroting BBC propaganda on why everywhere is terrible but the UK.

I suggest living in the US for a year or two to see if it's the dystopian hellscape you think it is - you can always fly home to the glorious NHS if you stub your toe.

This is easy in the US, check out Care Oncology.

In Soviet Russia, grain farming is national treasure. Iz best in World! Once you factor in per-person free labor, is most top in the world! Everyone is treated same in Soviet collective farm, won't matter if you're rich or poor!

Anyway. Some of us have been through the NHS a few times. I remember is was kind of ok under the Blair funding, not so great before or after.

Nokia blew up. Spotify was funded by the Danish government. Wise I've never heard of and Airbus is a pan-EU jobs program sponsored primarily by the UK, French and German governments to make sure there's jobs for random people to make wings in Wales or welding in Toulouse or whatever.

Yes. And keto, OMAD, etc... They all do the "same thing" in reducing serum glucose and therefore all the downstream bad things that happen.

Metformin forms the base plank of novel metabolic cancer regimens too.

This is entirely accurate from my experience. It's cargo cult "tech scene".

Cancer as a metabolic disease by Prof. Seyfried. Available on Amazon. Good starting point.

I've lived in a few different parts of the EU, and couldn't imagine a worse idea than starting a company there (which I did, once).

Starting is hard enough without the general negative attitudes, the government insanities, the insane taxes, the low work ethic, the 8 weeks of vacation every month (I exaggerate, slightly). And I was in one of the two best EU countries, God only knows how bad it is in Spain or Italy or whatever where opening for business more than one day a week is seen as aggressive. (again, I exaggerate slightly).

If anyone disagrees with this article who's in the US, I dare you to go and try and start something in the EU and report back. Not the UK, the EU.

Glory to the US, and the ability to move States with little friction. Glory to the LLC. Glory to firing someone with less than six months notice (I'm looking at you, Belgium). Glory to sales tax below 20%. Glory to the country I chose as home, which so many natives seem to be delusional about how terrible it is.

One day I hope the EU lives up to the dream of being a genuine federation of EU states, with zero friction movement of labor (this is completely laughable now compared to the US), defends its borders instead of giving up on them, allows free and fair competition and puts its citizens above the bizarre EU commission and its bonkers methods and plans.

Or it may have lengthened it. Oncologists are still in la la land about the genetic (as opposed to metabolic) theory of cancer, it's not clear when they will wake up.
238475235243··on Explainer: What is a global minimum tax and what will it mean?
Some thing are experiential. I can't substantially explain riding a bike to someone who hasn't gone through the process of learning and then being able to ride. It just won't really make any sense and there isn't a frame of reference.

I strongly recommend starting a company and trying to sell something if you truly want an answer to your question.

238475235243··on Explainer: What is a global minimum tax and what will it mean?
Not really true. If I know I'll make a bunch of money this coming year I can choose to book it as profit or I can hire more people or build a factory.

I would love to live in a universe where higher taxes somehow magically gives more profit.

238475235243··on Explainer: What is a global minimum tax and what will it mean?
Sounds like you haven't run a company, with respect.
238475235243··on Explainer: What is a global minimum tax and what will it mean?
Because it all works out in the end. If a company is taxed more it just means less profits which means I have a smaller 401k, fewer employees and so on, buys less materials, does less work...

Corporations aren't magic money trees. It's like damming a river, you don't get magic free water and get to send water downstream too. Dams have lots of downsides in return for controlling flow.

238475235243··on 7-11 is opening 500 EV charging stations by the end of 2022
There are more chargers than (most people) you think.

Having more is a good thing, but gas stations adding them wont move the needle any time soon.

A friend was telling me recently that there aren't many chargers. He lives in Boulder, of all places. There are a million public chargers around Boulder, but they're relatively invisible compared to a gas station, especially if you aren't actively looking for them. When I showed him the plugshare map he couldn't believe it, he thought this stuff was a decade away.

In my experience owning five EVs, public charging isn't really an issue, especially for Tesla and J-1772. If anything, I worry for chargepoint et. al. in the face of so many free chargers in the short term.

That said, there are some weird spots between superchargers if you have a tesla. And if you rely on CCS with the coming onslaught of F-150 lightnings... I wish you good luck and to reconsider. Slow charging speed and crappily maintained CCS / CHaDeMo are really going to suck the life out of you on road trips compared to superchargers. But if you can get by with J1772 then life is good.

238475235243··on Researchers chart path to drastically lower administrative costs of health care
You need a psychiatric evaluation for diagnosis, which is exceptionally hard to get. So there's a nice shiny website and then there's the reality. Getting the diagnosis and then medication can literally take years, and it looks like this is on purpose.
238475235243··on Researchers chart path to drastically lower administrative costs of health care
It's not just cumbersome - it's completely illegal to open a hospital. The lack of competition is the root of all of this mess.
238475235243··on Researchers chart path to drastically lower administrative costs of health care
Exactly.

Everyone should know it's completely illegal to open a hospital. It's illegal to charge less at 3am when you're not busy.

Any and all competition, even weak competition like Urgent Care, should be encouraged.

238475235243··on Researchers chart path to drastically lower administrative costs of health care
Or we could make it legal to open hospitals, or charge differential pricing based on the time of day... you know, basic stuff?

Most people have no idea how captured healthcare is. There's no competition, indeed most healthcare is government granted monopolies already.

Having lived in countries with "free" healthcare, that isn't all it's cracked up to be either. A good example of cost cutting: just make the disease illegal, like ADHD in the UK. If it doesn't exist, nobody can claim medication for it. Problem solved.

238475235243··on Multitasking hurts performance and may even damage the brain (2018)
There are people who have had a cognitive impairment they've worked with and they're are people who haven't.

If you have a brain injury, head trauma, stroke, cognitive migraine.... You're aware of the space you vacate. You can feel it missing and its "a thing".

For everyone else, you just convince yourself you're just as effective as you were. You think multitasking works or driving after two beers is ok. You're not aware of what is outside of your constrained cognition.

There's a number of pieces:

* Writing everything three times for three different computers with three different architectures in three different ways (e.g. numerical vs symbolic integration)

* Using obsolete programming languages for the same reasons doctors use latin

* Has to be usable by poorly trained pilots, while tired, on the other side of the planet in complete darkness with half the systems failing.

* Nobody dies if you web/game crashes. The plane has to still be flyable in unimaginably bad conditions like a total engine loss by deploying a windmill (ram air turbine), therefore every scenario is accounted for.

Caveat is we usually find new scenarios by crashing planes, not by thinking about them first. Kind of a definitional thing: if you'd thought of it, it wouldn't have crashed.
