We were actually taught in journalism school to write straight-up news for a Grade 5 level audience. You could get fancy if you chose in opinion pieces.
To your second point, if it bleeds it leads. That's always been the case. Journalism is, and always has been, a business. A sensational news story of yesteryear is today's viral content. It's the same thing — both are desirable because they sell.

That's Canadians, aged 55-64. I expect younger generations will be no different. It's an awful lot of people, given the age demographic in the country.

As a former reporter, I tell people that news can and should be biased. Why do the job of a journalist, why even get up in the morning, if you don't have values and beliefs.
If you want a completely unbaised platform, go to Facebook or Twitter. They literally don't care about anything except reflecting more of everything.
The "Request a Day off Button" is basically alert("NO"), which would indicate that functionality's probably been around since Day 1.
