1B05H1N··on ChatGPT can now search the web in real time
It also doesn't work most of the time.
1B05H1N··on WiFi without internet on a Southwest flight
Did you have permission to do that ? Sounds pretty risky to be probing the network of a flight imo.
1B05H1N··on Charlie Munger: Turning $2M Into $2T
It probably helps that 2 M USD in 1884 money is worth like 63 M today. /s

Yes, in general, we are not great at learning from history. How does blending academic psychology with other departments change that? Like how will that information disseminate *through/permeate society?

1B05H1N··on Meduza co-founder's phone infected with Pegasus
How many people died over these 0-days?
1B05H1N··on Google Pays $10B a Year to Maintain Monopoly, US Says
They've manipulated the search results too much.
1B05H1N··on Google Pays $10B a Year to Maintain Monopoly, US Says
""" This first phase of the trial will assess whether Google has illegally monopolized the online search market. US District Judge Amit Mehta, who is overseeing the trial, is expected to issue a decision next year on whether Google broke the law. If the Justice Department wins, it may seek remedies at the second phase of the trial to break off Alphabet’s search business from other products, like Android and Google Maps, which would mark the biggest forced breakup of a US company since AT&T was dismantled in 1984. """

We'll just have to wait until next year to see what happens.

1B05H1N··on Ask HN: What is your policy regarding smartphones for your children?
It's better to talk about boundaries and why they exist rather than set up arbitrary ones for seemingly no reason (imo).
1B05H1N··on Silicon Valley elites revealed as investors behind $800M Bay Area land grab
Isn't this the plot to a few dystopian novels?

I feel for the families that were forced out.

1B05H1N··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf
You should be okay as long as you solve the challenge(s).
1B05H1N··on Web scraping for me, but not for thee
Legal discussion aside, as a person working in security, it's pretty annoying to have to block certain web scrapers / automation while allowing a certain few.
1B05H1N··on ChatGPT's odds of getting code questions correct are worse than a coin flip
It really helps me get a better idea of what I should be doing. Like any answer from anyone, you have to understand and peer review. I usually end up rewriting ~50% of anything I get out of chatgpt.
1B05H1N··on Ask HN: Is there a future in which password management is sane?
Password manager + something you are/something you have. Cookies solve the problem for me after the first login + remember me option.

It's going to take time but people are going to have to get used to needing n+2 things to log into their accounts (username + password + MFA).

1B05H1N··on Sam Altman’s Worldcoin Token to Launch Monday

1B05H1N··on Google tries internet air-gap for some staff PCs
""" The company will disable internet access on the select desktops, with the exception of internal web-based tools and Google -owned websites like Google Drive and Gmail. Some workers who need the internet to do their job will get exceptions, the company stated in materials.

In addition, some employees will have no root access, meaning they won’t be able to run administrative commands or do things like install software. """

This is pretty standard across the industry for some workstations/build machines.

1B05H1N··on Undetectable Watermarks for Language Models
""" Emoji attack. In the “emoji attack,” the attacker asks the model to output a response to prompt with an emoji inserted between every pair of words. The attacker then removes the emojis to obtain the desired response. This attack removes any watermark that relies on the detector seeing consecutive sequences of tokens, including ours as well as those of [KGW+23] and [Aar22]. In general this attack may not preserve the output distribution, but any provable robustness guarantee for contiguous-text watermarks would have to rest on the dubious assumption that it doesn’t. """ https://eprint.iacr.org/2023/763.pdf

Pretty funny imo

1B05H1N··on OpenAI CEO 'feels awful' about ChatGPT leaking conversations
They're going to end up fumbling their momentum with the bad PR/optics.
1B05H1N··on Why northern Europe is so indebted (2021)
I really was born too late

"Only 8,600 more to go" - Amazon HR rep probably
1B05H1N··on Tell HN: MailChimp blacklists your IP if you open the browser's dev tools
Maybe they have a bot problem and their security policy is a bit too aggressive.
1B05H1N··on Ask HN: Fully remote role but not allowed to work outside the country
Legal reasons most of the time.
1B05H1N··on Show HN: Hacker News Without News

1B05H1N··on Taking over a Dead IoT Company
Awesome work!
1B05H1N··on Ask HN: Why Become a Doctor Nowadays?
Because they love it?

I almost went that route and there's pretty much no other explanation for it. It's a labor of love.

1B05H1N··on How Sam Bankman-Fried Negotiated His Way Out of Jail
He has lawyers and hasn't been found guilty on anything yet. Not really god tier negotiation imo.

Sex sells, welcome to the internet.
