19f191ty··on Societies that treat women badly are poorer and less stable
The argument doesn't necessarily go the other way though. Not treated well associated with less stability does not necessarily imply that women being treated equally leads to a stable society. If East Germany had treated their women worse then maybe it would have been even more unstable?

19f191ty··on Intriguing new result from the LHCb experiment at CERN
Some people consider the standard model to be a tape job. It can be modified to fit the predictions. But will provide any insights? Thats not necessarily the case. Ability to predict does not equal understanding

19f191ty··on India protests: Internet cut to hunger-striking farmers in Delhi
When the media fails to do its job then the people have to do it for them. Of course there will be condtradictory information coming in because the media has completely failed to provide a source of credible information. I'm not throwing out misinformation, but merely pointing out information that the OP missed and is available in reputable sources. There is A LOT of video evidence that points to BJP stooges inciting violence. The guy who hoisted the flag on Red Fort, Deep Siddhu is a known BJP supporter. Times of India , Indian Express, The Wire have all reported on this. Heck even Aj Tak had video where the BJP stooges are throwing stones at the protestors while an entire police battalion stands behind them doing nothing.
19f191ty··on India protests: Internet cut to hunger-striking farmers in Delhi
More information has come out linking the violent folks to the ruling party. The farmers have said it's not their people. Indeed the leader of the group that entered Red Fort is a known BJP. There's a video of him running away when accosted by the farmers. It's such a mess.

19f191ty··on “The Edge of Chaos” (2017)
What you state is not "edge of chaos", it's simply the non-equilibrium steady state. There's no connection really. Non-equilibrium states can be chaotic, non-chaotic, or at the edge of chaos etc.

19f191ty··on More Descent, Less Gradient
It's newtons method that he rediscovers. Are people not taught numerical methods these days? We learned it quite early in the much more general context of finding zeros.

19f191ty··on An Existential Crisis in Neuroscience
I don't even know where to begin rebutting your argument. Most of the stuff we actually know, actionable knowledge that has withstood the test of time, comes from small animals, including C. elegans, Drosophila, Aplysia and others. This is because a lot of the stuff is genetically conserved. Even things that are considered specific to mammals, neuromodulatory systems such as dopamine, serotonin are highly conserved. For example worms, flies etc they all get hooked on cocaine through what's thought to be a very similar pathway. Pathways governing such "complex" behaviors as learning, memory, exploration, exploitation etc. all seem highly conserved, which means that a lot can he learned. Source: I'm a worm neuroscientist working on mathematical aspects of neuromodulation of behavior.
19f191ty··on ADHD, a Lifelong Struggle (2018)
"If I don't want to wash a fence, I can't think about how to wash the fence. I go into complete lockup. I ask the question, "how do I wash the fence?" and the answer will not come to me.

I can't get to "first I need a bucket and water." "

This is so true! I'm ADHD, diagnosed and tried medications for a while, they helped, but had other issues so I stopped. What really helped was the realization that there are tasks where I can't even begin. I then gradually trained myself to think about the first thing and just focus on that. Don't feel like getting up from bed? Thing about moving my hand, then make it move the covers off, then move my legs and so on. Soon the momentum develops and I find it easier to do whatever I didn't feel like doing. Now my default is to just think about the very first thing and take it from there. It took me a while but has worked wonders for me.

19f191ty··on Deep Learning Breakthrough Made by Rice University Scientists
Unless it's in Math. If a Math breakthrough makes it to the popular media then it's most likely a very big breakthrough.
19f191ty··on The Mind of a Mathematician
Can you define groundbreaking? In a proper historical context, one might say the same about the likes of Newton, Euler etc. Mathematical ideas don't just happen out of nowhere. Everyone is inspired by something that was done before. So truly groundbreaking things are mostly a myth. The closest it gets is when someone takes ideas from one field and unexpectedly applied it to solve ab important problem in another field. Like Poincare's work on three body problem and celestial mechanics.
19f191ty··on The American System of Tipping Makes No Sense
Absolutely! The only way this will ever change is if the customers decide to just not tip. Yes, in a few restaurants, especially in a big city servers get paid better in tips. But I bet that is not true for the vast majority.
19f191ty··on The ReMarkable Tablet: A Review
I've been using reMarkable for more than a year now. It's a very mediocre product with major software problems, BUT, I still will not trade mine with anyone for one simple reason: it allows me to disconnect and think. iPad, surface are all better in terms of features, but I get easily distracted. When I have to write something I am having real difficulty with, reMarkable works much better. Can't precisely explain why, but my guess is that it allows me to focus more deeply, like a blackboard or notebook.

19f191ty··on Indian scientists launch preprint repository to boost research quality
Language is one of the biggest reasons. India, Indonesia and Africa are all countries with scores of different languages. Some of these are often languages in which research is conducted and communicated. Having a region specific preprint server allows people to communicate research in their own language. Then of course there are region specific research topics that the global scientific community might not care about.
19f191ty··on Indian Jets Strike on Pakistani Side of Kashmir Line
What happened exactly? Nobody's arguing that Indian planes crossed the LoC. But did they really bomb all the terrorist camps? Were the terrorists really killed? Were there really no civilian casualties? How do we know? In fact, how do they know? No source outside Indian media hasn't confirmed these details. Not just that, the Indian media itself hasn't provided evidence to back these claims
19f191ty··on Indian Jets Strike on Pakistani Side of Kashmir Line
I'd advise everyone to wait until it's confirmed. The fake news problem in India is at another level.
19f191ty··on Microsoft’s Resurgence Under Satya Nadella
Is a CEOs job really to start new stuff? As someone points out below, Balmer also started stuff that cost the company, windows phone, Skype etc. So I disagree that a CEO should be measured by only things he started that were successful. I think a CEOs job is that of a sustainer of growth, which can be done in many ways and doesn't necessarily need new products.
