1970-01-01··on Jabber/XMPP: 25 Years of Digital Independence
XMPP is the pinnacle of chat that just works. And it is champion by default, which is kind of the point here. All other popular systems and servers went defunct; it will never be taken over by BigCo and left to rot. Here's to 25 more years!
1970-01-01··on Wi-Fi 8 is the first wireless upgrade in years that isn't chasing speed
Stop chasing everything. Stop and give me true open source repos for the Wi-Fi chips and drivers so the already well-established community can care for my router for the next 20 years. Force this into the spec.

1970-01-01··on Malware infects Android-based automotive head unit firmware
..to add to a botnet for click fraud.

The duality of cybersecurity is interesting. Sometimes the high bar is cleared just to enable a low bar to go lower. Those PLCs monitoring water were ignored for a very long time because they couldn't click on ads. It took a war for them to become a target.

1970-01-01··on Show HN: Live 3D satellite tracker and the declassified Pentagon UFO archive
Nice site. Funny how some are zipping around just as fruit flies and other extremely small insects do. I'm still patiently waiting for someone to upload 4K videos of UAPs that are in-focus. We're in 2026 and still are squinting at white pixel blobs in gray skies or gray pixel blobs in black skies. Example: https://www.dvidshub.net/video/1017793/dow-uap-pr117-unresol...

Somewhere way out there another life is looking at a similar map and feeling the same!
1970-01-01··on Yes/No/Cancel causes Aspirin sales to soar
Great title. Great topic. The tiny details are all here, including the 4th option (X), the Abort/Retry/Fail link, and they even have RSS! Subscribed.
1970-01-01··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
This is a good example of immature writing. Buried on the bottom of the page are two links, both revealing internal tickets that are hinting as to how I can actually help. There should be big, bold, easy to follow steps for volunteers.
1970-01-01··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
Again, rare and valuable are not the same thing. A $2 bill is not as valuable as you think it is, unless you think it is $2.
1970-01-01··on Stop eating Lady Gaga's Oreos
There was more than plenty of names in music and tv that sold you stuff back then.

>That feeling part of a larger anti-consumerist vibe percolating through culture at the time.

No, now this is not how I remember it at all. It was entirely limited to that era of music. Back then, Michael Jordan got hundreds of millions on just his sneakers. Nobody dared to think he was "selling out". George Foreman grills were hot. Gretzky was into selling you quite a lot of stuff. Shaq has never stopped doing TV commercials since the 90s.

The article is very good; the headline is great. AI cannot (yet) do this.
1970-01-01··on Why the Ocean Cleanup hasn't solved the plastic pollution crisis
Well, it depends on the plastic, but the impact can be engineered to become fertilizer for soil.

1970-01-01··on Why the Ocean Cleanup hasn't solved the plastic pollution crisis
We have plastic that lasts a few years instead of hundreds. The pollution problem slowly solves itself if we just put in a bit of effort to ban the cheapest of the cheap plastics. The technology is here, we're just refusing to do anything.
1970-01-01··on Children's stunted lungs show recovery in ultra low emission zone
You can reasonably calculate the deaths caused by VW's diesel gate. We did that to ourselves.

1970-01-01··on The little-known winstart.bat batch file
I suppose it isn't if you never had it on real hardware. Win32 was well marked as the complete OS takeover for the PC. DOS remained only to boot Windows and as backup OS. If you absolutely needed to jump back to DOS you still could, however you were heavily expected to force your DOS programs to launch and live in their own little DOS environments, much to everyone's chagrin.
1970-01-01··on The little-known winstart.bat batch file
WINSTART.BAT is just "AUTOEXEC.BAT for Windows"

The extra diagrams to state how it all works were extra.

1970-01-01··on Remote workers report the highest well-being in study of 7,700 employees
Thanks. The complete gap to measure at-home living conditions kicks this into a flawed study. It does not control for physical living conditions anywhere. For instance, if your home is just some hot and filthy room in a neighborhood with lots crime, you're RTO just to escape the horrible environment.

Re: AWS.

Yes, you have agreed to SLAs. Credit is issued on your bill if they slip away from the 99% uptime contract.

1970-01-01··on Why your Amazon order confirmation emails have become so unhelpful
After checking every box to never get any email from Amazon.com, I followed-up with a catch-all auto-delete rule for the domain. That was 10 years ago. I have experienced zero issues with their services. As a nice bonus, I'm immediately aware of anyone trying to phish me via Amazon orders.
1970-01-01··on Claude writing a macOS driver for my obscure HP printer built only for Windows
Obscure? Sir, the printer is sold on Amazon. It is not obscure.
1970-01-01··on Quake Shareware, a CD-ROM just a little too full
I think you right, however they left all the right clues to decrypt it in days. You really don't want to do that.
1970-01-01··on Will you have spent more of your life with computers than your family?
Why is this front page? This is just a strangely framed ambiguous question. Here's more of the same: Will you have spent more of your life sleeping than with your family? Will you have spent more of your life walking than with your family? Will you have spent more of your time working than with your family? Will you have spent more of your time blinking than with your family?
1970-01-01··on Möbius strips and differential equations
Yes - it is possible to label it the surface inner and outer - see my previous comment about paint flying off the outer surface at high RPM.

Edit: I guess I have to make it extra simple.

1. Where there's surface paint, that is the effective inner surface.

2. Where there's no surface paint, well guess what, that's the outer surface.

3. There's no other, 3rd possibility. It exists or it doesn't. If you're the ant, you either feel a paint line on the surface or you don't.

1970-01-01··on Ask HN: Alternatives to GitHub
I don't want to ignite an argument, but this feels like Linux v Windows. You should absolutely switch because you hate dealing with it, but the less-popular choice is going to be less popular everywhere. Your next job will very, very likely not care about your personal hatred and will simply force you back into the default, popular choice. It is sometimes best to stick with what (mostly) works for everyone unless you want to go down the path of learning another tool.
1970-01-01··on Möbius strips and differential equations
You've redefined "the issue" but we agree here. The issue was there was no way for ants to know where they stand on a strip. Force will reveal where you stand. Topology makes it one (forever one) path (orientability). The ant will know where it stands, inner or outer path, based on how much grip it needs to cling to the surface. The outer edge is where the ant needs to start gripping the surface. The inner edge is where it does not. The twist is where it will need to apply grip force.
1970-01-01··on AGI-64 Brings Sierra Adventures to the Commodore 64
>Made for a 1 MHz machine

That's impressive work. It's fun to think how today's CPU rounding errors can run hit adventure games. Your smartwatch uses more cycles to render the time.

1970-01-01··on Möbius strips and differential equations
Spin the strip as you would a wheel. The forces tell you where you're standing on it; Just measure them: If you painted a line down the center, the paint would fly-out from half of the surface (at high RPM) before it could fully adhere to the surface. The no-orientation topology only makes sense if you're concerned with topology, the universe has other ways of showing you real orientation.
