1970-01-01··on Modder Makes GTA: Vice City Playable Inside GTA 3 Inside GTA: San Andreas
And finally there will be reaction videos, so we can have one more layer of content to process.
1970-01-01··on TP-Link Kasa cameras leaked home GPS via unauthenticated UDP for 6 years
This. They want to watch their cats when they are out but have absolutely no clue about security. So they just buy whatever is cheapest on Amazon and if it works the problem is permanently solved in their world. China has no reason to stop cranking these out at the lowest price point.
1970-01-01··on First atmosphere found on Earth-like planet in habitable zone of distant star
Back yard meaning we can see it but never touch it. If the ship to get there was ready today, it would get there in the year one-million? Back yard is Mars, Venus, moon. And I'm being generous with Mars and Venus.
1970-01-01··on Three ways people respond to a problem (other than solving it)
There's a 0th: empathy. They want to hear you say you heard them, hear you say the problem is a problem, and have you say the problem is making things harder.
1970-01-01··on Accidental Anonymity
It's 2026 today. Your work being all-human results in the exact same amount of job offers that the LLM gets you, just slower. It's still WHO you know that gets you work. That results in personal vouching, which results in human-human discussions. How hand-crafted your code looks is permanently not going to shortcut you into anything today.
1970-01-01··on Show HN: Leaves – A text-UI disk usage treemap visualizer
This is the kind of tool that should be baked into the kernel. It's never there when you need it, and when you do need it, it is probably already a full disk and you maybe can't just download it.
1970-01-01··on Show HN: Be the ChatBOT
I wish more people would be as bad as this sim shows the public, to the point where they leave and go rethink their approach using their actual intelligence. I would praise AI for doing the job correctly.
1970-01-01··on 42% of adults rely on their parents for financial support
The link to their study is much more interesting: https://news.northwesternmutual.com/planning-and-progress-st...
1970-01-01··on 1,300 Beautiful Wildlife Illustrations from the 19th Century Now Restored
I hate to be a contrarian, but I've always hated them. IMHO, the extra-fancy-style illustrations are just that. Now that we have wildlife photography, these seem to regress and appear much worse (again, IMHO) because they are literally an illustration of reality and not a snapshot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwhVJ7cv9B4&t=36s
1970-01-01··on Sony Deletes a Bunch More Movies from the Accounts of People Who 'Bought' Them
A laser-engraved QR code can store 3KB, enough for an entire ebook. The file format isn't the problem here.
1970-01-01··on 800 Canadian wildfires burning as air quality alerts extend to US
The only good news is it will envelop D.C. today. Fitting to force them to smell their passive dismissal of the global catastrophe of climate change.
1970-01-01··on Sony deletes more movies from the accounts of people who ‘bought’ them

     boolean bought = true;
     boolean owns = false;

        if (bought && owns) {
            System.out.println("Purchase resulted in ownership.");
        } else if (bought) {
            System.out.println("Purchase did not result in ownership. You have rented.");
1970-01-01··on The Last Picture Show: A Conversation with George Lucas
I always wanted someone to ask Lucas why he won't pivot into Star Trek. As both brands are brain-dead, and he is mostly discouraged from working on movies for Disney, it is a rare win for both.
1970-01-01··on The lost joy of music piracy
So, it appears just enough time has passed that what.cd domain is availabe. There is nothing stopping anyone (just a few $$$) from rebuilding it very quietly. The lost joy can return if you're stupid enough to try.
1970-01-01··on Teen hackers who live streamed cyber-attack on TfL jailed
>Many years back when I used to do CS for WoW, a colleague of mine liked to say that the only reason some kids shit-talk the way they do is because it's online and if they tried it in person they'd get punched in the face.

This is the #1 reason bots exist. We can't just punch them down anymore, we're flagged as bad people.

1970-01-01··on Tesla driver in fatal Texas crash pressed accelerator 100%, NTSB confirms
The best source for FSD crash data is still NTSB. Everything else is heavily biased. This one obviously won't make it to sites such as tesladeaths.com if it ever gets updated.
1970-01-01··on Microsoft Confirms Windows GDID Device Identifier That Cannot Be Disabled
What's your point? There are thousands of GUIDs in the registry.
1970-01-01··on British Steel taken into public ownership to protect 'vital' UK supply
Nope. The entire point here is facing the decision on which of these contingencies will apply.
1970-01-01··on British Steel taken into public ownership to protect 'vital' UK supply
As it is top-critical, you're recycling it, opening new mines, and taking it by force.
1970-01-01··on Rare book dealers fear tech firms are destroying obscure editions to train AI
Non-problem. Either your book is for sale or it isn't.
1970-01-01··on British Steel taken into public ownership to protect 'vital' UK supply
Steel comes from iron, which you can't grow. It's more critical than food, which you can grow. Same for vaccines.
1970-01-01··on The LLM Critics Are Right. I Use LLMs Anyway
>Master craftsmen didn't take on apprentices to give them chores.

Is today opposite day?

1970-01-01··on The LLM Critics Are Right. I Use LLMs Anyway
Because it's a machine, not an oracle. If you "hold it right" you are more productive. When you catch them being "dumb" you're reinforcing your own deep knowledge on the topic. When it is correct, you're either learning something new or your task is complete. You are still at risk when you know little and trust it to work alone.
1970-01-01··on Wildfires in Ontario make Toronto air quality worst in world
That photo has not been edited, this corner of the world is currently gray and orange.

1970-01-01··on Musk wants to open source X
He failed at open sourcing the Roadster, why should we even entertain this idea? This is just more hot air from the hot air machine.

1970-01-01··on Stripe and Advent have made a joint offer to acquire PayPal – sources
I've been thru 3 or 4 'lifetime' bans with PayPal. Just ask to be reinstated during the next big shakeup (now) and they'll let you back in. They want your money. They want your business. The exact same things you couldn't sell 25 years ago, the things that got you banned, are now listed online without care. They literally forget.
1970-01-01··on Microsoft Confirms Windows GDID Device Identifier That Cannot Be Disabled
Sources state the opposite. It is driven my the MS account.

1970-01-01··on Microsoft Confirms Windows GDID Device Identifier That Cannot Be Disabled
>The Global Device Identifier (GDID) is a permanent ID assigned when Windows provisions against a Microsoft Account.

So again, the "make an account" is the part you ALWAYS skip. Local accounts or it technically isn't even a PC anymore.

1970-01-01··on Sleep regularity is a stronger predictor of mortality risk than sleep duration (2023)
Pretty much my thoughts. People in lots of pain don't have a regular schedule to do anything, including sleep.
1970-01-01··on Your 'App' Could Have Been a Webpage (so I fixed it for you)
Does not have to be branded adguard to work. https://github.com/hagezi/dns-blocklists
