Depends on you definition of desirable. If the point is that the current enabled us to be existing, then any other state is less desirable simply by the fact that isn't the one that made us existing.

Which to be fair, would maybe actually work, and there are political positions that want to achieve such an economic system. Not that I would necessarily agree with them.

When it can do that, the people can also describe the output, i.e. the fact that your original website even exists is irrelevant for what people are able to do.
1718627440··on Ask HN: Why is Ask HN only showing me 14 posts?

Yes. My question is: do I need to write a crawler following next links or is there a way to have a single unpaginated list?

1718627440··on Ask HN: Why is Ask HN only showing me 14 posts?
> is there any place to find a full list of HN's lists?

What I wondered: Is there another list for e.g. my own comments? I would like to have a page with all my comments, so I could search in them. Is there already a way to instruct HN to provide this, or do I need to make my own crawler?

Some part of the population was subject to 60 years of continuous propaganda. That's three generations. You might say people should be able to see beyond that, but the ones influencing them were professionals too.
1718627440··on Type Safe Generic Data Structures in C (2025)
You're right, I failed at reading comprehension.

My understanding is that C has a different understanding of the word warning than other languages. Such as in "stern warning" or "warning: the building will collapse if you take that brick out".

This is a philosophical problem. C has false positives to the question: "Is that a program", and some people find that to be idiotic (I don't, this is why I like C). But this becomes really logical, when you have in mind, that the point is that you do not want to have false negatives.

> But what virologists can say with some degree of confidence is that covid was probably NOT the product of genetic manipulation.

Whether covid is the product of genetic manipulation and whether covid was released from a lab, due to an improper safety culture are completely different questions, and nobody has talked about the former question yet.

1718627440··on Type Safe Generic Data Structures in C (2025)
No, this counts as C++ is stupid to me. The memory returned by malloc is UNTYPED. The sole reason why void as a type exists is to convey the notion of no type, so that it needs to be assigned to a type by a programmer. If you mean "byte region, please cast before use" that's 'char *'. Since C++ now forces me to write a cast, it effectively forces me to hide and silence errors.

I do want an error when I violate types, I do not want it for void, because that's the whole meaning of void. C++ manages to make it the worst of both worlds.

1718627440··on Type Safe Generic Data Structures in C (2025)
Yeah, and that's the reason why people prefer to write in C.

"That's not how things are done in C++" I like C, because I can just decide for myself how things are done here.

I don't have resources, to conduct studies, this was just an impression from reading Wikipedia pages and random websearch. Major news publishers in my language seem to convey the image, that intelligence agency generally agree on the lab hypothesis. Not just as side topic, but as the settled mainstream opinion. (The links were already shared here, that's how I read them in the first place.)

Yet the comments here seem to indicate, that that would be not the case from an US-centric perspective even if the publishers in my language claim it comes from the US intelligence agencies. And indeed that seems to be the tenor to a larger percentage in English publications.

> I have no idea what “ whether there are still in service or not.” means

Officials that are still in office seem to it's fringe to say it comes out of a lab, while does that are retired seem to claim, that it is obvious. Even if these are the identical person at different times.

Irregardless of the claim of correlation, between Russia and a lack of safety culture, it is currently a country in a war economy with populace shortages.
1718627440··on Nearly 200 people under observation after Irkutsk lab worker dies from plague

It seems like which of these two is the majority opinion heavily depends on the language/country you read information in and also whether there are still in service or not.

Yeah, it is indeed a conspiracy theory, that is also shared by the CIA, FBI, BND and public health officials.

Not really; "there is probably a connection" probably was supposed to mean "could be studied, maybe a correlation is found", rather than "surely there must be a causation", which is what some people seem to want to take it for.

I don't understand myself, what you actually gain from constantly buying new music. Either the music is good, or it's not. If it's not it's not a loss to not buy it, and if it is it's not going to stop invoking the emotions you like it for, or intellectually demand you. You can hear the same music for hundred of times and still discover some new aspect, instrument, melody or sound, you haven't noticed yet. (if it is good)

If I would try to chase, constantly, new music, I wouldn't be able to actually listen to anything, and thus wouldn't enjoy anything at all.

(The only thing that makes sense to me, if people want to be like their peers and up to trends, so simply "listen" to new music to be able to talk like they now what's en vogue right now. But then it's hardly about the music itself and more like collecting an evergrowing checklist.)
