171243··on The Forbes ‘30 Under 30’ Hustle
Interesting. As an informal evaluations of the premise of the top comment in this thread I read your bio. I am posting the comment and your bio here for other interested individuals:

The comment:

>I know two people on the “30 under 30” list. Both of them are incredibly charismatic and charming in person. Their Instagram and Twitter accounts churn out constant brand building material. They both have pseudo-startups with noble causes and vibrant websites. Their startups have a list of impressive advisers, including B-list senators and industry executives. However, neither of them have made any progress on building an actual business. One of them has supposedly been developing the same simple product for almost 7 years now, but they’ve never been able to produce even a proof of concept prototype. I thought I was missing something for the longest time, until I let go of the idea that they were really trying to build a company. They’re not. They’re building their personal brand, and succeeding wildly thanks to publications like the “30 under 30” list that have an insatiable appetite for underdog success stories. Surely some of these companies are legitimately successful with great business models, but they’re mixed into these lists with the brand builders who know how to game the system. I’d be interested in reading an honest “Where are they now” follow up series that checks in with these founders at the 5-year mark after they make this list to see who the real successes are.

And your bio:

>Tyler Menezes is the Executive Director at SRND, where he works to increase diverse Computer Science enrollment across North America by inspiring underrepresented students to give coding a try. Born in Canada but raised in the Pacific Northwest, he briefly attended the University of Washington before dropping out to start a Y Combinator and venture-backed social video startup in 2011. This, combined with stints working in machine learning at Microsoft Research and as a programmer at several Seattle startups, led to his work finding data-driven solutions to increasing CS diversity and enrollment since 2014. In his free time, Tyler helps run the Projects in CS class at Garfield High School, and organizes the public speaking event Ignite Seattle.

I actually went and read part of there post history and

"My wife lost the diamond in her wedding ring and we were talking about getting it replaced. I have two daughters in their early 20s and they were aghast at the idea..."
So make that 8+!

HN is funny. There is always a response to questions posed in this manner explaining why some extraordinary circumstance is true rather than just agreeing with the premise raised by your question.

There was a question posed the other day "What car could you possibly be driving that would mean 10% of your driving tickets is a number greater than 1?" Instead of saying the figure may have been an exaggeration the answer was basically, "I drive a racecar."

Correct me if I am wrong but isn't the central premise of the book that if you take a late project and add more people to the team it takes the project longer???

I've literally never met a manager that practiced this. Is the book still relevant? Not disagreeing, just curious.

To be honest, it is incredibly effective? Have you ever given it a shot?

So just to clarify, this behavior seems to be by design. In that case it does seem the original comment is objectively wrong if the code is readable and maintainable and accomplishes the desired behavior.

Didn't this recently change? Prior to 2018 was it not considered a "like for like" transaction?

I believe prior to 2018 this was not the case with crypto.

I once had a superpower like this. I bought the Verizon Unlimited 4G internet plan before throttling or data caps were a thing in roughly 2010.

I had the Droid Razr Maxx and later Samsung Galaxy S5 with 1 5 dollar app that turned my phone into a hotspot (FoxFi) that the Verizon could neither detect, prevent, or charge extra for. I used 200+ GB's of blazing fast internet over the air for something like $50 a month for about 5 years.

It was an insanely good deal. The only rules were I was not allowed to make any modifications to the plan because it was taken off the market and I was considered "grandfathered" in. The "unlimited" plans of today are nothing like that plan was. They have data caps, are throttled, and traffic get reprioritized.

It was just as much a part of me as this ticket was for this gentleman (well not quite that much, but you get the point). Eventually Verizon just flat out upped the price to over $100 per month and it became unsustainable. Glorious while it lasted, sorely missed.

Good topic and looks like some good examples. The formatting is nice, easy on the eyes but there is excessive whitespace in the book. Having large screenshots means when they don't fit on the page they get bumped to the next and a huge gapping whitespace appears. I can tell this is stretching out the length of the book. I'd peg it at really only about 50 pages of content instead of the 76. For an example just look at page 75/76 and how the content is distributed.

You have 25 repositories and I can't figure out what a single one is besides a personal site with lots of binary commits spaced out over a number of days. Care to expand on their purposes?
171243··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (May 2019)
I looked at your github to see if you would be a good fit for our company but you only have 2 days with commits? Is that right?

171243··on Setting Up a Pi Hole Made My Home Network Faster
I was thinking of a device similar to a pi-hole for blocking TV commercials. It plugs into your TV's HDMI port and somehow as soon as a commercial starts it switches to playing some relaxing music or a low key picture slide show. Even just switching to a blank screen would be better than the commercials yelling at me. Not really sure if it is feasible because it would have to have the smarts to distinguish between the actual tv show and a commercial but I'd play good money for something like this. And for bonus there would be some running metrics, just like how those water fountains that say something like "saved 3432 plastic bottles from entering the environment," this would say "saved you for seeing 242 hours of commercials"

Georgia Tech's Online Masters of Computer Science. 100% online and same degree you get from the on campus program which happens to be a top 10 in the nation. There is no research track unfortunately which means it is a terminal masters program.

171243··on BATAS: 8086 assembler written in MSDOS batch
I showed off the "net send" flood in my school which was a batch file that looked like this:

    :label
    net send username
    goto label
Someone then substituted * for username and flooded the network. I got to spend a week in in school suspension for that!!!
171243··on BATAS: 8086 assembler written in MSDOS batch
Wow, this is a blast from the past. I got started "programming" by writing batch files to do all sorts of interesting and crazy things. Stuff like sleeping for a second by printing a predefined number of spaces because the sleep construct didn't exist. There was some guys homepage (think 1996/7) that I remember had an incredible amount of scripts to do things like grabbing the logged in users name, etc all through batch files. In the process of researching possible commands to use in the scripts I came upon "debug" which seemed to be its own language but was far too advanced for me as a 9/10 year old. Glad to see someone finally found a use for it! Good times.
