1234fdsazxcv··on EU leaders agree to cut emissions by at least 55% by end of decade
Emissions per capita are low because a lot of the population lives in poverty outside the city or in the city on the margins. It is not an eco-utopia.
1234fdsazxcv··on About Google's approach to research publication – Jeff Dean
I would agree with this assessment. It seems people think this is like academia -- it's not. There are no guarantees of tenure at a private company, even one with a research culture. If she wants that, then give up the paycheck and go back to academia. Google doesn't owe her anything. (I bet she'll get a decent settlement.)

AI ethics are important and I'm willing to bet that the Google execs want to know about biases and other problems in their products and probably don't care that much what is published. They probably don't want high maintenance researchers that cause them headaches and are obsessed with microaggressions, etc. I expect that this stuff has been a distraction for too long and they are happy to be rid of this and happy for the signal it sends across the company.

I have little sympathy or concern for Ivy educated elite in-fighting. There is probably a huge number of qualified people just dying to have the opportunity to work there, have access to those resources and do research.

Can we please use paragraphs to create a coherent thought/point rather than a series of one-liners? Perhaps spend a little more time to think through/build out your thoughts. It is more interesting for your reader and (I think) promotes more nuanced conversation if we all spend more time thinking about our ideas before we rush to post.

Note, this is not specific to the parent post but just a general comment made with the hope of raising the level of conversation beyond twitter.

1234fdsazxcv··on Going from $0 to $2M ARR in 2 years
The article is just an excuse to sell their services. But agreed it's pretty vague.

Also, the tone/bitchiness of the comments for the article are truly the worst I've ever read on HN in a long while. Raise the tone or just take it somewhere else.

This policy has lost all grip with reality. Where do you see the vibrant tech scene in Auckland? I'd love to see a some economic data from StatsNZ that supports your case. Even Theil sold out as soon as he got his citizenship.

There's a little tech sector here but it is certainly not a major part of the economy. Everything is still based on the real estate ponzi scheme and resources... and a naive political class.

Ha! That's not true at all. Having rich Americans come is actually a public policy option that was openly debated in the papers during the election.

Basically, New Zealand has turned into a real estate operation that sells milk on the side. Despite record highs all parties have made it their explicit goal to keep housing prices high. Having rich people come buy real estate is really considered a great idea. I'm shocked but that's the way it works here.

Reading the article may help. The article states that it was a temporary event.
1234fdsazxcv··on Australia to produce seaweed cattle feed that reduces methane emissions by 80%
This is market forces at work. Regulations and environmental science used to help to define the rules of the market are really a useful way to allocate resources. Worry less about telling people what they should do. Instead, think about how we can construct market rules to incentivize good behavior.

At least that's my two cents. It's fun to talk to friends about how to fix the world with a central planning mindset but there are a lot of smart people out there. Let them do their thing. Today's fads (lab grown meat) may or may not work out. Maybe the best solution hasn't come along yet.

There's a reason we had to switch away from that. The crop rotation cycle isn't an efficient use of land. Synthetic fertilizers exist for a reason -- the human race wants and needs an excess of food. No one wants to switch to a model of food scarcity.
