111111101101··on The whole thing was a scam
I think most would care if their AI buddy starts shilling products mid-conversation. People would lose trust, instantly. That's why the Super Bowl ads were unfair. It's not going to happen like that. That would be stupid. Say what you like about Sam Altman but he's not stupid.
111111101101··on The whole thing was a scam
> As they first were in Google.

So because you saw it once in one company, it will happen in every company? By that logic, wont Claude eventually get ads too, even though they are saying that they wont?

Even now, Google ads wrap around the content, they don't mess with the search results.

> Were you around then?

Yes. I was around for AltaVista, WebCrawler, and Lycos too. None of those were LLMs.

111111101101··on The whole thing was a scam
Because the models aren't going to be recommending products in their conversations. The ads will be visually separate from the model's output.

"But I believe in fair play. This wasn’t that."

Anthropic’s Super Bowl ads weren't fair play either.

111111101101··on How will OpenAI compete?
It took Google a decade before they released Chrome so OpenAI has plenty of time to have a Chrome moment. Maybe it'll be something that comes from the OpenClaw acqui-hires?
111111101101··on Creating a 48GB Nvidia RTX 4090 GPU – Brother Zhang's Repair Shop (Ft. 张哥) [video]
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJlFmyr8c14 https://www.reddit.com/r/hardware/comments/192z13d/scammers_...

> In that case, why would the scammer sell the 4090 board at all? At that level of fraud, the scammer could just as well send a circuit board from an alarm clock, or a brick.

Plausible deniability. With a real-looking GPU, the seller can always fall back on user error, bad PSU, driver issue, PCIe slot problem etc.

The buyer may even doubt themselves at first and spend time reseating the card, reinstalling drivers, swapping cables, or testing another system. By the time they're confident it's not their fault, the return window or dispute period may already be gone.

None of that works if you send a brick or an alarm clock PCB - the fraud is immediately obvious.

Always this cope from Americans. A broad revolutionary movement will have sympathisers in the military and police. They can raid the governments armouries. The IRA became infamous for arms raids.

I was interested. Clicked the try button and just another wait list. When will Google learn that the method that worked so well with Gmail doesn't work any more. There are so many shiny toys to play with now, I will have forgotten about this tomorrow.

HN doesn't like blockchain. They had the chance to get in very early and now they're salty. I first heard about bitcoin on HN, before Silk Road made headlines.

I think that generative AI is a much bigger deal than the internet and maybe even the Industrial Revolution. The internet mainly sped up existing processes and made them accessible to everyone. We’ve had mail order for over a century, transatlantic communication through the telegraph and radio, and the printing press.

If the Industrial Revolution was so impactful because it boosted human productivity, then the ability to spawn hundreds, even thousands, of intelligent 'humans' at will must be an even bigger deal.

It seems to be a uniquely American thing. In my country at least (Australia), anything that benefits the common man isn't labelled as communism. It's probably related to hysteria induced by McCarthyism.

111111101101··on The music industry's A.I. experiments
I was just messing around really and thought that it might be easier to find an audience with Christian music rather than if I tried targeting a more mainstream genre. Those mega churches need to play something, right?
111111101101··on The music industry's A.I. experiments
Obviously, it's not perfect, and right now, for the best results, it would have to be re-recorded with a proper singer and instruments. But for some dude who has barely any experience in making music, I think it's amazing.

Also, I'm not a Christian; I just experimented in that area because I assumed that the quality bar would be lower in a more niche music genre. I made a custom gpt to generate the lyrics and structure and then just prompted it with, 'write me a song about jesus but don't use his name.'

If this is where it is now, where a person with no skills can make a song that wouldn't seem too out of place on a soundtrack for a Hallmark Channel movie, imagine where it's going to be in 5 years?

111111101101··on The music industry's A.I. experiments
I've been completely blown away by the quality that I'm getting from Suno.ai Not all of it is good of course, maybe only 10%, but that 10% is of a higher quality than anything I could have produced myself.

People really don't see where this is going, do they? Replicas are the last of their worries. Actors and singers should be more worried about being replaced by perfect, completely artificial people. It's like when extras were worried about being replaced by body scans. No, ThisPersonDoesNotExist will replace you all, silly.

If that's how you feel then you're not going to like startup culture in general. Every second SaaS founder thinks that they're changing the world with the launch of their crappy CRM #3432.

They're right in that, seeing how it turned out, everyone who could have bought a house really should have bought a house. The thing about bitcoin is that EVERYONE could have bought in, either with cash or through mining. You didn't need to save a large deposit or get approved for a loan. It was an opportunity that was right there for everyone.

I regret not investing more or mining. I can only imagine how those who missed the boat completely feel.

111111101101··on SEC asks for emergency order to freeze Binance US assets anywhere in the world
It's really not. How would a self proclaimed technology enthusiast react to missing out on one of the greatest tech investment opportunities of their lifetime? I suspect that they would react exactly the way hn's crypto haters do now.

No, you didn't make a huge mistake. It's crypto that's wrong.
