10u152··on DraftKings is using AI to behaviorally target chronic gamblers
You’re setting up lots of straw men here but it’s not a complicated argument.

Most people feel this is deeply wrong at a gut level and I agree with them. Targeting and squeezing addicts is not moral behaviour.

10u152··on The largest electric aircraft just flew [video]
Agreed, however only fuel for piston engine aircraft is leaded. Not many of them at a large commercial airport. More of a GA issue.
10u152··on Nashville uses eminent domain to block data center near zoo
I work in construction, - data centres included - in Australia.

From my experience you’re mostly right, however it’s more like, in order of priority: power availability, water availability, data availability, land price. Cost to upgrade upstream power transmission dwarfs all other costs.

I’d note that after construction ongoing jobs are minimal. Specific example: $2B aud datacentre will support 30-60 jobs after completion. And probably 50% of those are low skill/income security, cleaning maintenance etc.

10u152··on How to survive boiling water
No, but I believe the idea is to damage the ticks before the exposure to the bacteria/viruses and thus minimise/prevent it.
10u152··on Chongqing, the Largest City – In Pictures
Oh come on.

Lower socio economic Chinese definitely still fear the rich and worry about being homeless and not getting medical treatment.

10u152··on America desperately needs more air traffic controllers
Aircraft work within an envelope. You can model what a max speed/min speed max/climb min climb/ trajectory is and work that in. It's a solvable problem. Aircraft can't go from 200-0 knots or 0-200 knots instantly etc
10u152··on Demand for Starlink in Zimbabwe is overwhelming capacity
If fast, reliable, cheap internet worldwide is a "minor" gain what's a major gain? Fusion power? Teleportation? Dyson Spheres?
10u152··on Sol-Ark manufacturer reportedly disables all Deye inverters in the US
It is at the moment as it’s doing energy arbitrage and needs to know the current energy prices.I believe you also get more warranty if you have it connected to the internet as they can fix bugs etc remotely. But the PW isn’t mission critical.

I also have an off grid cabin with a Victron inverter that is not on the Internet and never will be.

10u152··on Sol-Ark manufacturer reportedly disables all Deye inverters in the US
It’s a bit more sophisticated than that. On a mild sunny day your local network will be saturated with PV power and the supply voltage will creep up. It’s an enforced regulation here (Aus) that the inverters will curtail/shut down based on grid over voltage. No networking required.
10u152··on Sol-Ark manufacturer reportedly disables all Deye inverters in the US
There are US manufacturers. I have a Tesla PW3 made in the U.S. and it includes solar charge controllers, batteries and inverter.

Pretty competitive too.

10u152··on Post-postal: What did we lose when we stopped writing letters?
You’re mostly quite right about phone calls.

But the point was the industry that I’m in runs on them because the teams you’re communicating with are in the field and supervising construction not in front of a computer.

These are young engineers who need to build experience and relationships with the site teams and text messages aren’t going to build them.

10u152··on Post-postal: What did we lose when we stopped writing letters?
I used to manage a team of 12 young interns and graduates. They almost all hated emails and hated making calls. They would always default to messaging/Teams/etc. I spent a lot of time coaching people on how to make calls, why etc. It was a construction adjacent industry and sometimes it HAS To be a phonecall.
10u152··on Car brands are collecting and sharing your data with third parties
I have no knowledge, just replying to a post as to the content of the article.
10u152··on How to delete your 23andMe data amid the company's turmoil
I did read it. The response is we will delete unless… and it lists a bunch of possibly applicable laws.

Based on the vagueness of the response (which law in particular, what are the details etc) I’d argue they won’t delete anything ever and claim that they thought they might run afoul of some law.

10u152··on Car brands are collecting and sharing your data with third parties
True. I suppose you could remove the antenna or sabotage it in some manner
10u152··on How to delete your 23andMe data amid the company's turmoil
So they'll happily delete everything unless it has value to them. Charming.
10u152··on Car brands are collecting and sharing your data with third parties
Isuzu, Mitsubishi and Subaru according to the article. Although as someone else points out Subaru is substantially owned by Toyota and Toyota does collect so that will probably change soon.
10u152··on Car brands are collecting and sharing your data with third parties
I assume the cars with active telemetry have a SIM card of some description. You could remove it/disable it but you'd lose app access and remote control features. I know of people doing this in Toyotas.
10u152··on Amusing Ourselves to Death (2014)
>…having kids is the root of all evil.

Quite a take there. Kids are also the source of all joy and happiness, depending on how you look at it.

10u152··on Apple Watch Series 10
Calling it a "microcomputer" is meaningless.

What is it doing? Monitoring some sensors, communicating with a phone via bluetooth, running a screen.

10u152··on Apple Watch Series 10
No I still don’t understand the Apple Watch battery issue.

I have a xaiomi mi band 9. The body to screen ratio is roughly the same as the Apple Watch. It does HR tracking, workouts, has excellent 1000 night brightness, weather, notifications etc. I get about 15 days from a charge. They say I can get 21. But either way. I understand the Apple Watch is running better hardware and more things in the background, but there’s also significantly more space in the watch for battery. It might be doing more but a factor of 15x is a crazy differential.

10u152··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
If you click on battery health in settings it will literally set up a link to request the replacement service, very minimal friction.
10u152··on They're Breaking Every Retirement Rule to Be Off Now, Not Later
Eh? 20k?

Are you insane? Insurance, rates, food, utilities are already more than $30k and that’s with zero travel or other expenditure.

10u152··on Cities are overheating. How do we cool them down?
Parks in general provide good cooling. They’re basically giant evaporative coolers, drawing groundwater and cooling the area
10u152··on Oakland's new school buses reduce pollution and double as giant batteries
The “air” in “air conditioner” is describing what the function is. It’s conditioning the air. Plenty of ground source/geothermal air conditioning. It’s just a nomenclature thing.
10u152··on Solar will get too cheap to connect to the power grid
I don’t know where you live, but I can speak to how it works in Australia.

Your energy bill has a fixed daily rate to be connected to the grid. That pays for poles and wires, maintenance etc. To oversimplify a bit there’s also your cost per kWh to buy energy and to sell it. Someone using their own PV system during the day and buying from the grid at night isn’t “free riding” like you think. The connection is paid for by the fixed connection fee.

10u152··on Slow is smooth, smooth is fast: Navy SEALs' efficiency secret
Yes, but the description above has to be hyperbole. A 6.2 built athlete vs small woman...
10u152··on Slow is smooth, smooth is fast: Navy SEALs' efficiency secret
Funny you say that, as soon as I read it I remember my favorite professional enduro rider coaching people using exactly those words.
10u152··on Texas sues GM for unlawfully collecting and selling drivers' private data [pdf]
Horses are the OG self driving vehicle, they’ll happily plod home if they know where they are
10u152··on National Park Service Will Cite AWD Drivers for Driving on 4WD-Only Trails
You’re a bit confused here. A Subaru is AWD, and essentially has 3 diffs. Centre, front and rear. A Tacoma has 2 diffs. And a transfer case in the middle. A transfer case acts like a locked centre diff when engaged in 4wd, otherwise only sends power to the rear diff. When 4x4 people talk about locking diffs they mean a locking front and or rear diff.

Something like a wrangler rubicon or a G-class would have a locking front and rear from factory which is rare. Transfer case and locking rear isn’t particularly unusual in an offroad vehicle.
