0zemp1c··on Starship Flight Test (Launch in 1 hour)
> but I am not comfortable with it, this is not a success, this is work in progress and so far this launcher is unproven

we need a "middlebrow dismissal" link

0zemp1c··on Imgur Updates TOS, Banning NSFW Content
You have petabytes of porn available with incredible ease, every interst and fetish you can imagine

A terabyte of new porn will be generated while you are reading this

You can go your whole life consuming porn for hours a day and never see the same content twice, for free

Not sure what your complaint is

0zemp1c··on Can forcing people to save cool inflation?
This would be seen as a tax (even if it isn't) and hurt Bidens re-election chances

And what if the government never finds the "right time" to release the funds? Then it's confiscation

0zemp1c··on Universities should return to oral exams in the AI and ChatGPT era
Colleges in the US on the march to $100k a year already...do you really think students/parents are looking for optional ways to spend even more?

People want to learn, but what they really want is a degree. No one is going to go two more years into debt for pedagogical purity

0zemp1c··on Universities should return to oral exams in the AI and ChatGPT era
> The Greeks figured this out

the Greeks didn't have Psych 101 classes with 2000 students

0zemp1c··on The Age of the Crisis of Work
bonuses have become almost algorithmic

at least where I work in BigTech, your bonuses are more or less pre-baked based on:

- company prospects (they do well, you do well)

- seniority (your "level")

- tenure

I've not seen anyone get outsized bonuses based on individual merit

0zemp1c··on The Age of the Crisis of Work
replace "saving 50k" with "eliminating tech debt" for many

we all know we could rebuild or refactor systems to improve them, but all we would be doing is spending time and money to earn no more money, because the "improved" product/service wouldn't appear different to the outside world

my new attitude is to not even both with tech debt unless the product will be enhanced or improved in some user-obvious way

0zemp1c··on The Age of the Crisis of Work
this type of malaise will be fixed as 80% of the people and companies in tech disappear over the next ten years

the remaining 20% will replace all of their workers with fresh blood from college and for a time, everyone will feel vital

0zemp1c··on AI Incident Database
this is starting to smell like "fake concern"...technically-astute people who are nonetheless ignorant of this tech trying to "participate" by shrieking in terror over imagined dangers
0zemp1c··on Offline is just online with extreme latency
yeah, no

offline means no expectation of a response, that is very different than an extremely delayed response

0zemp1c··on America’s entitlement programmes are rapidly approaching insolvency
people tune these stories out because they've been published continuously for decades

we were told the US Debt at $10 tln would doom us

then $20 tln

then $30 tln

no different than pension funds...doomsayers were declaring CalPERs dead in the late 90s

maybe the USA is the ultimate Too Big To Fail and we can take the national debt to $100 tln?

0zemp1c··on Meta is about to start its next round of layoffs
sure, if you feel like applying to the companies claiming unfilled positions:

Chipotle, Mcd's, Target, Walmart

etc

0zemp1c··on Interview with GM leader replacing carplay and Android auto
There seems to be something everyone is missing here:

Eventually, ALL car manufacturers are going to "own" their screens

CarPlay and Android Auto were stopgaps, hope you enjoyed them

I enjoy using Android Auto in my '22 Civic, but I also know that the only reason Honda supports it is because they just haven't built out their replacement tech yet. They will (or license what GM is building).

Honda, Toyota, Ford, Mercedes...everyone...they are all going to own (and monetize) that center console. They don't care what HN thinks and they know that five years after the transition, no one will remember or care.

Doesn't anyone remember the story a few months back of carmakers rebufffing Apple's attempts to integrate CarPlay better? They don't want Apple owning the center screen! If you really really like CarPlay, keep praying for the Apple Car.

Everyone digging in their heels on this will be like the people who swore to never give up manual stick.

0zemp1c··on The low productivity of Canadian companies threatens our living standards
as someone born in Canada, grew up there, no longer living there

this is cultural!

Canadian culture is defined purely and only as contrasting itself to the US

it isn't just business competitiveness, its anything...healthcare, public safety, the environment...ask any Canadian about their thoughts on these (or any) topics and the answer provided will be a contrast to the same issue in the US

this has resulted in a unwarranted pride and willingness to turn Canadian society inwards on itself, supposedly to protect itself from ugly Americans

the Globe And Mail nailed it with an article titled something like "Canada: Smug For No Good Reason"

Canadians are discovering the pitfalls of basing a national culture on nothing more than being appalled by the US...all that is left over is a maniacal obsession with total mediocrity

tl;dr: Canada is in decline, but at least we aren't them Trump loving Americans, eh!?!?!

0zemp1c··on Southwest Airlines pauses departures after reporting technical problems
this is why I walk everywhere - no tech debt!
0zemp1c··on Honey, I Left the Tech Industry (2015)
reads more like someone taking a sabbatical than nope-ing out

if you can swing it, sabbaticals seem like a great idea

everyone I know who has left tech "permanently" has eventually come to the same conclusion - other industries are also bullshit and pay less

0zemp1c··on Coinbase CEO: we're preparing to go to court with the U.S. SEC
I actually agree with Armstrong here - the SEC has had plenty of time to assess the market for crypto products and offer clear rules...it almost feels like the indecisiveness is an intentional policy used to cow the industry.
0zemp1c··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
Well one example is infrastructure...if a formerly-rural area gets a gradual accumulation of homes, chances are they are all on septic systems...so people are using their property for waste water recycling, and there is a limit to how dense this type of living can be.

I grew up just outside a decent-sized city in Canada, now living in Texas...both places, on septic. Its not rare.

0zemp1c··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
its like a weird inverse of paying quarterly taxes...the same goal - more of your money stays with the government longer
0zemp1c··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
> And we’ll wonder why the people in that cute little European town we visited that one time seemed so much happier.

except they don't think that

the Americans nod politely and whisper to each other "can you imagine living that close to your neighbors? nooooo thank you!"

HN needs to just drop this notion that anyone opposed to density is a caveman. I love the fact that my neighbors can't see me and I can't see them. Everyone is one an acre minimum. We like it like that and we're not even Literal Nazis!

0zemp1c··on Why don’t more people live close to friends?
heh no, America was taught by Hollywood to be afraid of Baltimore (The Wire)
0zemp1c··on AWS staff spending ‘much of their time ’optimizing customers' clouds'
> Now I can setup a core switch running 100 GBs with failovers by just plugging in some cables

no ops person I have worked with in the last ten years knows what a switch is, and this is over many companies both startup and bigtech

no different for storage, compute...the experience and aptitude gap at most companies, even tech companies, is profound

ops has become devops, netops is no longer in their skillset

0zemp1c··on AWS staff spending ‘much of their time ’optimizing customers' clouds'
I expect almost everyone who tries to rebel and go "on prem" will flame out and come running back to the cloud

Ops talent has really dumbed down over the last decade or so (sorry no polite way to say it). Long gone are the days when the ops engineers were talented devs who just liked hanging out at datacenters. Nowadays most of them are just button pushers who are good for standing up SaaS stacks or other simple tasks, but I'd never ask any I've dealt with in the last ten years to build out a datacenter presence from nothing. Most have never set foot in a datacenter. On top of that, most modern ops teams have been downsized (thanks to cloud) that they wouldn't have the hands to get the job done.

Even for good ops people, it can be very hard to capacity-plan and understand what appropriate/affordable/useful hardware is. Most ops folks today have probably never purchased servers for production deployments.

AWS will be happy to welcome these companies back after their on-prem dreams die.

0zemp1c··on DuckDuckGo’s building AI-generated answers into its search engine
Brave is also injecting "summaries" into its search results

they're harmless I guess...but also mostly irrelevant to what I am searching for most of the time

0zemp1c··on Samsung considers moving to Bing as default search engine
> It's almost as if Samsung is a lot more dependent on Google than the other way around.

in a pinch, Samsung could just fork the AOSP project and continue forward without Google, it would be trivial for app makers to re-publish their apps in a Samsung app store (and many already do)

0zemp1c··on Samsung considers moving to Bing as default search engine
> as well as sweeping out crappy "customizations."

huh? Samsung OneUI features have been making their way into mainstream AOSP...particularly the tablet-focused stuff

there is no way Google will ever try to "strong arm" Samsung...Samsung is the Android market, the Pixel line is a rounding error and in no way a competitive threat

0zemp1c··on Samsung considers moving to Bing as default search engine
he's a good choice for "Good Times"...when the money is rolling in and you're on top, it is okay to have an inoffensive friendly supportive type in the CEO chair

those times are gone though and Google definitely needs someone more proactive and focused

0zemp1c··on The Military-Industrial Stock Buyback Complex
yeah no, you aren't churning nuclear subs out of a rowboat factory in 2023

even if you were to start a new company to build nuclear subs (for example) today, you are probably looking at a decade or more until you can produce something

0zemp1c··on The Military-Industrial Stock Buyback Complex
