0xfeba··on Self-Driving Cars Have a Problem: Safer Human-Driven Ones
Yes, but unless all cars have speed limiters in them at those speeds, the drivers go faster regardless.
0xfeba··on Game Builder: Create 3D games with friends, no experience required
> I would have killed to have tools like Unity when I got into game programming. All of my hobby time was eaten up trying to wrangle OpenGL and C++ and crappy open source engines, and cobbling together a shitty physics engine, so I never got around to the actual game part.

I'm still in that boat, and I am an 8 YoE "Software Engineer". I recently got into boardgame.io library (also made by a Googler, coincidentally) and it is a fantastic library.

I've attempted to make min-max CLI board game simulations before but failed. Also tried (still somewhat active) to make a 2D artillery game and got close, but just kept getting bogged down in framework (actually migrating from framework to framework) and other chores. Currently it uses LibGDX.

With this boardgame lib I just wrote game logic. It was fun, for a change! Plus it has multiplayer and integrates with React really well for a UI so it's actually useful.

I just wanted the CLI boardgame sims to find the best moves/races in games I play IRL. With this I can actually have other people play and maybe show it off at some point.

0xfeba··on GnuCash: Open-source double-entry accounting software
It handles CSV well. Otherwise, no.

Have you tried Firefly III?
0xfeba··on Third-Biggest U.S. Coal Company Files for Bankruptcy
Did he burn it in an enclosed space?
0xfeba··on Third-Biggest U.S. Coal Company Files for Bankruptcy
> Are those regionally different?

Perhaps, but I think most of the difference is between healthcare provider plans. In other words, depends on who employs you.

0xfeba··on On the Trail of the RoboCall King
Because, like spam email, it only has to work for a tiny fraction of a percentage of targets to be profitable, and enforcement is rare.

Except it's more annoying than spam email because it actively interrupts people.

And since origins are spoofed, I usually can't determine if it's a robocall unless I answer. Especially if you are expecting unknown number calls (selling something, etc.)

0xfeba··on Magic: The Gathering is Turing Complete
Add at least one more:

- doesn't let you repeat actions, or patterns of actions (move back and forth in a stalemate like pattern).

Detecting non-trivial stalemates is hard, though.

0xfeba··on Employees Start to Feel the Squeeze of High-Deductible Health Plans
Of my past 3 employers over the past 8 years (all family plans):

$3000 deductible, no HSA

$6000 deductible, HSA

$9000 deductible, HSA

I pay $370/month in premiums... $100 of that a fee because my spouse is eligible through her employer but the plans are even worse, so we declined it.

So we pay $4,500/year in premiums. Which equates to roughly a 20% effective income tax instead of ~15% normally.

This is ridiculous. Whomever seems best to get a single-payer plan in place is who I'll vote for. Absolutely no reason it should matter who my employer is for what doctor I can go see or how much I pay in private, personal medical bills.

Retirement accounts I feel the same way, but that's a long way off for the US.

Other countries have solved this fucking problem, I'm tired of elected congressmen firing back with "BUT VENEZUALA" quips every time someone mentions "Medicare for all".

And the proper response to that is "So we should eliminate Medicare altogether then, right? Where's your bill for that?"

0xfeba··on Jack Dorsey Is Gwyneth Paltrow for Silicon Valley
Well, scratch Twitter off the list of places I'd work. What bizarre behaviour.
0xfeba··on On Oliver Sacks and His Obsession with Weightlifting
335 squat, 440 deadlift, 215 bench... I feel my deadlift and squat are good. Squat a bit weak but it's progressing. I've been at 215-235 bench for years.
0xfeba··on On Oliver Sacks and His Obsession with Weightlifting
What about back arch? I just cannot arch as much as some people seem to without it really feeling painful.

Perhaps coincidentally, my bench is considerably weaker than my other 2 lifts.

0xfeba··on Ask HN: Has there been any academic research into software interviewing?
Social-engineering your PM to remove requirements, yep.
0xfeba··on After the Bust, Are Bitcoins More Like Tulip Mania or the Internet?
Survivorship bias. If I had a nickel everytime I saw that argument from some conspiracy nut...
0xfeba··on OpenShot – Open-Source Video Editor
I've used the cheap AVS video editor which works really well for the price. I tried OpenShot for a small clip and had the same feelings bumbling around at first.

The UI did feel a bit slow at times, and I had other specific complaints that I don't recall now but I was happy to have an open-source video editor.

0xfeba··on 'Calling bullshit': the college class on how not to be duped by the news
Russian Collusion mass hysteria?

Members of his immediate family and campaign flirted with people associated with the Russian government. He lied about his Russian financial deals. His National Security Adviser lied about his contacts with Russians and his foreign ties. And finally, Trump talks so oddly fond of Russia (and other despots) without ever condemning their human rights abuses.

It was worth investigating.

0xfeba··on Congress Is About to Ban the US Government from Offering Free Online Tax Filing
What's preventing a OSS solution to this? What I can think of off the top of my head:

* Lack of e-file permission

* Lack of any kind of legal recourse or audit protection for the user

* Constantly changing tax system

After a casual search on GitHub I see a few calculator projects but nothing serious.

I'd be down to help make a free competitor to Intuit. I see no reason to use a non-static site unless it's to keep previous years data, but that's iffy and sounds like it requires a whole other legal consideration.

0xfeba··on Why Don't Americans Understand How Poor Their Lives Are?
I'd have to agree.

> pick up some mass-produced groceries, full of toxins and colourings and GMOs, even if they are labelled “organic” and “fresh”, all forbidden in Europe

As if just being a "GMO" by itself is a disqualifier. That'd be 90% of the crops on the planet. And the catch-all "toxins". Oi the naivety.

There are some truths in that article but it was hard to read without cringing. That and he generalizes the entire US when public parks, transportation, art, events etc. vary wildly by state.

Ok, well public transport is pretty terrible everywhere in the US.

0xfeba··on Gimli – A Visual Studio Code extension for front-end developers
Super minor... but when I start scrolling down on FF 66.0.1 the "Debug" and the URL in what I thought was a bg image get garbled/overlapped:

0xfeba··on Call for testing: OpenSSH 8.0
A while ago I tried making windows' remote differential compression COM library work in a CLI utility like rsync.

0xfeba··on To lure young talent, banks mimic tech workspaces
> thing that gets right on my tits.

Is this a real saying? Or a typo?

0xfeba··on To lure young talent, banks mimic tech workspaces
> The corporate equivalent are agile methods with plenty of tooling but no direct communication with the client, open spaces yet still 100 layers of hierarchy, empowerement that means more responsability and no leverage, and the usual "we have plenty of cool looking equipment except what you actually need to get the work done".

Very well put.

0xfeba··on Firefox Send: Free encrypted file transfer service
IIRC The link contains an anchor `#abc123` which is the decryption key. Browsers do not send anchor parts of the URL to the server, and so the browser decrypts.

Hinges on the browsers never sending that key, though.

0xfeba··on Major bank accidentally published a private package to the public NPM Registry
There is a `private` setting in the package.json to avoid this situation.
0xfeba··on 24/192 Music Downloads and why they make no sense (2012)
I had an album (albeit free) on bandcamp dissappear from my library.

Luckily it's on a backed up RAID6 array, in private server, streamable whenever I want.

I mirror all my purchases onto equipment I own, and so I guess I get the benefits of both.

0xfeba··on Don’t Get Clever with Login Forms
KeyPass? That's what I use and I probably am 50/50 between using autofill or Copy+Paste. And it autoclears after a few seconds.

And I store my DB in Dropbox, but not the key.

0xfeba··on Don’t Get Clever with Login Forms
Yeah I can set a delay or custom keypresses, or field IDs in KeyPass. This and OP just have to configure it properly.
0xfeba··on Tech Is Splitting the U.S. Work Force in Two
Nope, I think in pretty much all states, property taxes fund schools in that district. So if your parents have an expensive home, it gathers lots of property tax, which goes mostly to the school in that neighborhood.

> American Dream

The so-called American Dream of social mobility does not exist anymore. It's a relic from the 50s, where a single income from a modest job could support an entire family, with a summer vacation every year.

The more modern examples of rags-to-riches bootstrapping-my-own-widget business are atypical.

The middle class is disappearing and it's not because they are upward bound.

0xfeba··on Tech Is Splitting the U.S. Work Force in Two
I don't think anyone's suggesting everyone get the same portion. I just think that if you work 40 hours (or 35, or whatever we determine is "fulltime"), you should be able to support you and your dependents without going bankrupt if you get cancer.
0xfeba··on US shutdown: Flight delays caused by staff shortages
Thanks for the response. If the government is inefficient, but provides its population with their needs (healthcare, defense, etc.), does it matter?

I mean, ideally they'd strive to reduce those inefficiencies, but why does it need to be a certain level of efficient to be considered "good"?
