0xcafecafe··on Trump suspends H1B, H4 visas till year end
Change of status won't give a visa "stamp". That will be needed to get out and get back in. Visa stamps are only issued from consulates outside the US and are subject to vagaries of weather patterns and cosmic radiation.
0xcafecafe··on France, Italy, Belgium stop hydroxychloroquine use for Covid-19 on safety fears
Can someone please elaborate on this? What is the "reproducibility crisis" in this case?
0xcafecafe··on Breathing and Exercise: Strength Training for Your Diaphragm (2018)
Your interesting tidbit about breathing led me to pay attention to my style. Seems I am doing the "right" way, stomach distends on input and vice-versa. It seems impossible to do the other way. I wonder how people get into that habit.
0xcafecafe··on Fed to inject $1.5T to prevent ‘unusual disruptions’ in markets
As I understand, they stepped in to bridge the bid/ask spread and act as a temporary market maker to solve a liquidity crunch. Can someone more knowledgeable tell me why the bid ask spread is so wide to begin with?
0xcafecafe··on Trading halted as U.S. stocks plummet
Real rates are (and have been) negative. :/
0xcafecafe··on Anthony Levandowski ordered to pay $179M to Google
Good read. This made me chuckle

"Even the Levandowskis’ nanny assumed a minor role in the drama, when she filed a multimillion-dollar suit of her own, claiming that Anthony had been emotionally abusive to her, and that he had a drawer that was filled with sex toys. (The lawsuit, which offered no evidence of her claims and contained multiple factual errors, was eventually dropped.)"

0xcafecafe··on Disney blocks John Oliver’s new episode critical of India’s PM Modi
Can you please point that out? Your previous statement is factually incorrect. The law in question (CAA) grants a one time amnesty to religiously persecuted minorities from neighboring countries of India. Heck, even Sri Lankan Tamils (Hindus) are not included since that was a sectarian conflict. And that amnesty is one time for anyone who came in before December 2014. For the rest, the existing path to naturalize in 11 years remains. It does not affect any existing citizen whatsoever.

Regarding NRC, it was a supreme court mandated exercise which was hastily done in Assam without a well thought out process. There has been no proposal issued about a nationwide NRC and what it would look like. The govt also clarified there are no plans to execute NRC anytime the future.

I thought this forum is more on facts and less on rhetoric. I abhor the banning of anything critical but we should be wary of misinformation at the same time.

0xcafecafe··on Singapore Airlines is using aeroponics to upgrade in-flight meals
Kitchens were out of the homes a few centuries back due to fire codes back then (from what I learned in the plantation tours in Louisiana,US). Today there is no reason for kitchen not be in the house. With all the news about pollution, potential pandemics, it is good to have a controlled environment where the food you ingest is prepared (even though ingredients are not 100% controlled).

Personally, I find cooking meditative and relaxing after a long day in my cubicle and I enjoy eating what I make myself sans excess oils, food colors, etc.

0xcafecafe··on China bans consumption and trade of wild animals
I hope it is enforced well. A lot of loss of wildlife (tigers, rhinos, etc) in the neighboring countries is attributed to the consumption for traditional Chinese medicine.
0xcafecafe··on No person who was born blind has ever been diagnosed with schizophrenia
Interesting. Can it also have something to do with an extremely small sample size? These are both rare conditions so intersection might be even rarer.
0xcafecafe··on The Seven-Year Auto Loan (2019)
They have a 7 day return policy so that works for me. Took both my cars to respective dealers and checked out.
0xcafecafe··on The Seven-Year Auto Loan (2019)
Agree with used. I've gotten both my cars from Carvana and it has worked out quite well; saving over 10K per car by going for a 2 year old car each time.
0xcafecafe··on Finland to give dads same parental leave as mums
Thanks for the reply!
0xcafecafe··on Finland to give dads same parental leave as mums
What happens to your responsibilities at work while you are out? And are you totally cut off from work while you are out or are you occasionally responding to mails? Also are you more of an individual contributor or have a leadership role?
0xcafecafe··on Finland to give dads same parental leave as mums
> I noticed when visiting the US that breastfeeding was not very normal. Like they don't even teach it in a standard hospital.

On the contrary, that was one of the first things they teach after giving birth (apart from diaper changing). They also stressed heavily on the importance of nursing and set us up with a lactation consultant if we needed help in the future.

0xcafecafe··on Hippos have become an invasive species in Colombia
Zebras are quite dangerous. It's interesting they let you get that close.
0xcafecafe··on Ask HN: A New Decade. Any Predictions?
Per capita is the only metric that makes sense for carbon emissions since the effects are not going to be confined to artificial nation boundaries. So no, no need to multiply anything.
0xcafecafe··on Visualising the amount of microplastic we eat
What do you use to clean your hair? Do you just rinse it in water?
0xcafecafe··on Incident: Wizz Air and Air Europa Planes in Near Collision over Spain
""Kaloyev is a hero. Those guilty of causing air crashes often remain unpunished. Such a radical punishment is the only way to make them carry responsibility for their crimes," said Vitaly Yusko, a member of a Russian organisation dedicated to helping the relatives of air crash victims. "

Ughh that was bad to read..

0xcafecafe··on What Is the Most Valuable Thing You Can Learn in One Hour?
Same here! The reach was a Godsend for me.
0xcafecafe··on Incident: Wizz Air and Air Europa Planes in Near Collision over Spain
Wasn't this the incident where a bunch of kids died and the grieving parent of one stabbed the ATC person responsible? Sadness all around...
0xcafecafe··on Netflix's UX design is keeping people up at night
>>If you liked a TV show or movie, give it a "thumbs up." If you didn't like a TV show or movie, give it a "thumbs down."

True, it does affect their recommendations but still the inherent purpose of a thumbs down is to tell them I watched it but didn't like. I would love for them to provide a "not interested" option as well.

0xcafecafe··on Netflix's UX design is keeping people up at night
That button is for rating the movie/show after you watched it. I want to apriori eliminate items before even attempting to watch them.
0xcafecafe··on Netflix's UX design is keeping people up at night
That's what I was thinking as well. There seems to be a "dislike" button missing in the UI. If I am not interested in a movie/show, I should be able to stop it from wasting my screen real estate. There can be separate section for dislike list which the user can edit if needed.
0xcafecafe··on Windy.com – lots of meteorological data presented well
Great website. I saw it first time here in the hacker news forum on the thread about the amazon wildfires. The other layers option has a lot of stuff (including active fires).
0xcafecafe··on India builds detention camps for up to 1.9M people not on citizens register
au contraire, /r/India is India's version of /r/The_Donald. As a centrist, I have seen debates on /r/IndiaSpeaks but any contrary opinion on /r/India is not tolerated at all.
0xcafecafe··on Stamping Out Online Sex Trafficking May Have Pushed It Underground
The cost of a rich person vs a poor person of voting against their own self interests is not the same. And I am not condemning anyone. To me, it is just contrary to the PP's statement of Americans thinking about themselves and not about others.
0xcafecafe··on Stamping Out Online Sex Trafficking May Have Pushed It Underground
I was going by the PP's premise of choosing one's one good over the greater good of society. What I observed was actually the opposite since that poor coal miner is against "higher taxes" & "socialism" even though it is directly benefiting him. That level of adherence to an ideology is what I found baffling (which has nothing to do with my own ideology).
0xcafecafe··on Stamping Out Online Sex Trafficking May Have Pushed It Underground
As someone who has lived here (US) for close to 15 years, what I find baffling is that some of the voting isn't even that myopic. It is so strongly ideology based that a poor coal miner would vote for a politician who would gut his healthcare and scream "socialism is bad" at any alternative which might actually be beneficial to them in the short term.
0xcafecafe··on New airplane seat design to make it easier to sleep in economy
Thanks for the explanation! I am always curious to learn about other cultures. TBF I am an introvert myself but it was interesting to see the behavior extended to the mainstream.
