0xakhil··on Bazzite: Operating System for Linux gaming
@KyleGospo, Any plans for an arm64 version?
0xakhil··on Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft
This sounds like a step down for both openai and sama. Microsoft probably wins here as they still have access to openai tech and now the only entity with access to the same talent pool as was there before last Friday.
0xakhil··on Google's Gemini model is delayed
I am not sure about stock market summary and similar stuffs. I created a stock earnings report summariser [1] using the recently announced GPT from OpenAI. It is pretty handy and cool. This is not something Google can replicate for everybody’s niche needs.

0xakhil··on Exploring GPTs: ChatGPT in a trench coat?
I see a lot of value in the form of convenience from GPTs. It helps to avoid repeating the intial prompts for things that you want to do multiple times. For eg: I created a GPT for stock earnings call report anlaysis [1] which helps me to get the analysis or summary by just entering the company name or stock ticker. This is at least a huge improvement in UI which makes me comeback and use it frequently.

0xakhil··on iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
I think the omission of usb3 is because of the reuse the Apple silicon from last year which doesn’t have the builtin usb3 IP. Let’s wait for next year’s non-pro models to see if they are really cheapening out.
0xakhil··on Intel Arc A580 could be the next great affordable GPU
Apart from the software stack, Nvidia has invested a lot in the networking infrastructure for high bandwidth between gpu in a cluster. I think their acquisition of Mellanox might have helped here.

So competing on server grade gpu might be more difficult for intel.

0xakhil··on The ARM powered ThinkPad x13s, as a developer
For anyone wondering about Linux support, here is a video of thinkpad 13s running GTA V on Linux at 30fps using Fex-emu: https://youtube.com/watch?v=WBOjioe8-8Y&feature=sharec
0xakhil··on Llama.cpp 30B runs with only 6GB of RAM now
Some OS’s zram compress the unpinned pages instead of swapping to disk. It might be faster than fetching the pages again from disk. I wonder if this is a reason why folks see different results.
0xakhil··on Llama.cpp: Port of Facebook's LLaMA model in C/C++, with Apple Silicon support
Does Llama model has a token limit like ChatGPT api (4k tokens)?
0xakhil··on Ask HN: If I capture Elon’s roadster in space, would it belong to me?
The question is about Elon. The car I guess is still registered to him. So legally, wouldn’t he still has a claim to it?
0xakhil··on 512GB 14” M2 Pro MacBook Pro has slower SSD than previous model
For ipad, Capture One subscription is way costlier than Lr.
0xakhil··on Smartphones wiped out 97% of the compact camera market
After I used a dslr camera for few months, I notice small ugly artefacts in my iPhone 12 mini’s pics. Along with that, smartphone pics has a weird distortion which is very noticeable with the wide angle lens, but it is noticeable now to me with even the regular lens. Sort of like background compression, which i find pretty ugly. I think this is a physical limitation of a small sensor and lens. Not sure why nobody has fixed that with computational photography. All I want is to have my pics look like a shot with standard 50mm lens. I don’t care about bokeh actually.

You won’t notice these things until you are familiar with pics from a dslr camera.

0xakhil··on Thermal Pad ‘Mod’ Makes M2 MacBook Air Faster Than 13″ M2 Pro
It has passive cooling solution a.k.a throttling. It is the same thing what your smartphone does.
0xakhil··on Notice of termination of Twitter merger agreement
Okay, plot twist. Musk never intended to buy twitter. Whole ploy was to get access to twitter’s firehose of data to train his AI.

On the serious side, I can’t believe someone would gamble with half of his net worth. But this is Musk!

0xakhil··on Meta VR prototypes aim to make VR 'indistinguishable from reality'
It might be difficult for us to imagine a shift to VR version of social media. But think about the next generation of kids growing up with these kind of techs. They will mass adopt them and we will follow. For Facebook, it was millennials who adopted first and for Snapchat/tiktok, GenZ.

And Facebook will get the opportunity to own the platform completely for the first time. So the soon they reach their goal, the better. Actually, it is a smart move.

0xakhil··on Tell HN: Did you know you can negotiate price on many things?
Here in India, I have found that just casually asking for a discount will instantly get you a small discount in a lot cases. You just need to look not excited at the product and politely ask if there is a discount. Or at least if they can round the price to nearest hundred. Basically, this is zero effort savings.

For costly things, it is better to cross check with a few stores to get an idea about the local price and ask what is the best they can do. You can let them know you have checked other stores, but don’t share the details of other offers. Sometimes, checking with a store over a phone call might get you a better deal, because yours is a zero effort deal for them which they don’t want to lose to a competitor and also, they won’t be able to read you like they can in case of an in-person bargaining.

I usually try to avoid who doesn’t show even a tiny interest in a negotiation. It is better to give business to someone who is willing to spent some time discussing with customer.

Being said all these, I don’t spend too time much on this to milk out every possible discount. It is a trade off between time/happiness vs saving money.

0xakhil··on Apple removed the Bluetooth Explorer, can't use high quality headset anymore
Maybe because bluetooth is stuck with 2.4ghz band. So when you move the noisy wifi out of this band, bluetooth gets extra bandwidth to transfer higher quality audio.
0xakhil··on I bricked then recovered my reMarkable 2
Can I use this as an ssh terminal to login to my development machine? I wonder if the display latency would make it non-starter for this usecase.
0xakhil··on Human in Robot Costume Good Metaphor for How Close Tesla Is to A.I
I wonder if we put AI in a humanoid form, it may find a more efficient form of movement with limbs which look very odd to us. Then we need to put some hacks or artificial constraints to make it behave similar to a human.
0xakhil··on The beauty of cheap products
If something is not repairable without breaking a bank, it is better to go for cheap and good enough options.
0xakhil··on The beauty of cheap products
You are absolutely right about the situation in the developing countries. Here in India, an Apple product costs around 150% of what it cost in USA. But when it comes about after sale service, they are absolutely horrible. Xiaomi after sale service is miles better and cheaper than Apple. I had an iPhone X which was just shy of 2 years old. I dropped it last year from a 1 ft height and the thing doesn’t turn on after that. When I took it to an Apple’s authorised service centre (they don’t directly provide service in India), they quoted such huge amount for replacement (yeah, they don’t repair here) that it was cheaper for me to simply buy the latest model at that time, an iPhone 11.
0xakhil··on Safari 15 on Mac OS, a user interface mess
I welcome these sort of new experiments as long as they give an option to revert to the previous behaviour. At least until they have a real world data to confirm 99 percentile users are happy with it. I don’t know if Apple provides that option in this case, but I think that will reduce the public outcry.

It doesn’t make sense to not expect experiments like these in an actively developed product.

0xakhil··on M1racles: An Apple M1 covert channel vulnerability
How about randomising/reset these bits from kernel whenever there is a syscall? Not a great workaround but this should limit the effectiveness of leaking. Yeah, there will be tiny perf hit due to extra register read and write.
0xakhil··on Apple announces it will switch to its own processors for future Macs
GPU is actually relatively easier to scale by adding more cores/ALUs. The difficulty lies in figuring out how to handle peak current requirement of the whole IP.
0xakhil··on Writing a RISC-V OS in Rust: System Calls
One way is to open the driver file and use an ioctl call to allocate a shared buffer and write your texture there.
0xakhil··on Visual Studio online available for public preview
I think embedded programming would be possible once web browsers start supporting USB devices.
0xakhil··on Bill Clinton and American Financiers Armed China
Hasn’t china’s cheap labour helped American companies to capture international market? If Americans didn’t do it, someone else would have leveraged China and owned these markets now.
0xakhil··on China Grew Two Cotton Leaves on the Moon
Does this mean we have colonised moon? (in reference to The Martian movie)
0xakhil··on Get your work recognized: write a brag document
I am amazed how fast this website loads. Great job!
0xakhil··on iTerm2 3.3
For a person who is comfortable with Tmux, is there any significant benefit that iTerm offers over the Terminal.app? I believe Terminal.app is better than other consoles when it comes to power consumption.
