0xFFFE··on Linux on Samsung Galaxy smartphones
I miss my N900, I could run full fledged Debian on it. The Maemo OS also had Terminal app with full SSH client & server app. I used to SSH into my phone from my laptop just for kicks. And then Nokia had to go and fuck it all up.

When I moved here I was surprised to know that I had to explicitly ask AT&T to enable tethering. In India, it is enabled by default and is part of your subscription, you just pay for the data depending on the plan you choose.
0xFFFE··on Stellar collision confirms theoretical predictions about the periodic table
Thank you for the link, it's amazing how quickly it cooled down. I thought it would take hundreds of years for it to go from blue to red. But I guess since the merger of the neutron star resulted in the formation of blackhole, It could explain the rapid cooling down, a la endothermic reaction so to speak :)
0xFFFE··on Stellar collision confirms theoretical predictions about the periodic table
Whenever I read about neutron stars, they are always too far away (like millions of light years), so I did a quick search and found one closest to earth about 250 to 1000 light years and apparently it is above the plane of the milky way galaxy.

I wish we could watch these neutron stars and black holes more closely, we know so little about the universe.

0xFFFE··on World's largest electric vehicle
Apologies if it sounds too dumb, but on the descent you have additional mass of your cargo that needs to be opposed by equal amount of braking force (magnetic or otherwise), on the ascent you have an unladen truck which needs lesser energy to move. So essentially the magnet has to be sized for the descent not for the ascent. Or am I completely missing something?
0xFFFE··on World's largest electric vehicle
For vehicle of that size to have a controlled descent using only the magnetic field (from the generator) as the braking force, it has to be one massive magnet, no? In which case, it is also adding to the overall weight of the vehicle.
0xFFFE··on TRAPPIST-1 Is Older Than Our Solar System
By the looks of it, we still have a long way to go. :)
0xFFFE··on Perfectionism versus Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Is striving for an elegant solution making optimal use of resources same as striving for perfection? Question is half rhetorical, asking because I would like to hear other opinions.

The way I see it is, they are trying to save expenses wherever they can so they have budget for other major projects. India imports pretty much all of its oil spending precious foreign currency reserves. So if they can save few thousand litres of fuel every year that's a good saving.

Secondly, IR has ambitious project to electrify all major routes, please see section 5 of the link for ongoing projects (a total of 20k RKM)

http://www.core.indianrailways.gov.in/view_section.jsp?lang=...

Thirdly, there is huge ongoing project to set up dedicated freight corridor across the country. To separate freight and passenger traffic.

Here is one of the drone videos.

Lastly, they are spending huge money on modernizing the train stations.

All these have to come from the same annual budget (except dedicated freight corridor project)

0xFFFE··on The Argument Against Terraforming Mars (2016)
We as humans haven't yet learnt to co-exist with other animals and maintain the equilibrium on Earth. What makes us think we are going to treat Mars any better? Please don't get me wrong, I am all for exploring the planets, in fact I am annoyed that we don't yet have the technology to visit a system like TRAPPIST-1. But unless we learn to be considerate towards nature and other species which inhabit this planet we are not going to be good residents on other planets. Just my two cents.

Thanks for the polite response and my apologies for being a bit of a dick in choosing those words. And yes, I agree with the points you made.
0xFFFE··on US quits Paris climate pact
"China and India given their records on human rights?" Are you suggesting there is no country in the world where human rights are not violated? I am not defending the violation, but that sentence sounds naively aloof and disconnected from reality.
