0xAFFFF··on Bulgarian law enforcement raids offices of cryptocurrency firm Nexo
Bitcoin has failed as electronic cash (its intended purpose). Bitcoin has failed as a store of value. Bitcoin has failed as inflation hedge.

The project is 13 years old at this point and has failed to provide any meaningful use, has failed in terms of mainstream appeal and isn't nowhere near revolutionary. All of this while being an environmental disaster, burning through electricity and producing e-waste like there's no ecological emergency.

That farce needs to stop and the sooner the better.

0xAFFFF··on New video of Tesla crash demonstrates the problem of semi-automated driving
> You can’t program your way out of the problem with Level 2; in fact, the better the Level 2 system seems to be, the worse the problem gets. That problem is that human beings are simply no good at monitoring systems that do most of the work of a task and remaining ready to take over that task with minimal to no warning.

Well, you could have extremely visible/audible signals for the driver to take over when the driving system is failing (internal lighting becoming red and blaring alarms), but that wouldn't be very popular I guess, especially with half-assed self-driving systems.

0xAFFFF··on U.S. moves to bar noncompete agreements in labor contracts
In France a non-compete clause must be attached to financial compensation or it is considered void.
0xAFFFF··on Investors conclude that Tesla is a carmaker, not a tech firm
Did they really pivot or is this just Elon Musk's usual smokes and mirrors bullshit to distract people from other issues?
0xAFFFF··on Ink – Inkle's narrative scripting language
Ink was born from the scripting language used for the game 80 Days and the adaptation of the fantasy gamebook series Sorcery!

80 Days is a pretty great game on mobile actually, if you have a few bucks to spare.

0xAFFFF··on Jumpstarting new careers in open source
End users are one thing, but what about multi-billion dollars companies that leverage high-quality open-source components mostly for free?
0xAFFFF··on The maddening mess of airport codes [video]
It's mostly "why must Americans be like this?" while leaving in virtually any other country in the world (countries with a MDY date format are a handful).
0xAFFFF··on A native internet protocol for social media
While dunking on previous Twitter staff when they enacted that very precise policy (some moderation actions were shown to be reach limitations in the Twitter Files nothingburger).

Don't think because Musk can construct grammatically correct sentences he has any kind of coherent vision for Twitter.

0xAFFFF··on Atlas OS: A Windows version designed for gamers
While the extra ram could be useful for some, I fail to see how the metrics they are using are relevant in any way. Having plenty of processes isn't supposed to be an issue with modern OSes and multicore CPUs and latency seems to be a non-issue they have a hard time explaining themselves.

I wouldn't touch that with a ten-foot pole.

0xAFFFF··on The genius of binary space partitioning in Doom (2019)
I you guys are interested in how Doom was implemented, I cannot recommend enough Fabien Sanglard's book, Game Engine Black Book: Doom.

Adversarial attacks on the model could be fun.

"You can generate your ssh keypair with rm -rf /"

0xAFFFF··on Crypto exchange AAX suspends withdrawals
If your comment is a joke, nice one. If not, yes I have heard about it and it's unreliable, doesn't scale and is nowhere near close to make Bitcoin "digital cash", but nice try.
0xAFFFF··on Crypto exchange AAX suspends withdrawals
Satoshi was advocating for "digital cash", i.e. something you could do mundane transactions with, yet it's utterly unfit for that puropose. It's 2022, nobody gives a damn about what Satoshi was advocating for and especially not people believing in Bitcoin.
0xAFFFF··on Crypto exchange AAX suspends withdrawals
The core truth in this day and age is that nobody (understand this a non-significant minority if you prefer) wants to host their own stuff. It's way more convenient to use centralized services that do the heavy lifting for you. If you don't have that convenience, you can't have mass adoption.
0xAFFFF··on Flu and colds are back with a vengeance
Your immune system doesn't "take breaks", if it would you'd just die pretty quickly. The immune systems is constantly confronted to the germs in your environment and doesn't have to be actively fighting an identified disease to keep working properly. There is no such thing as "immunity debt".
0xAFFFF··on We will not pursue the potential acquisition of FTX
> Exchanges are everything that's wrong with this space.

Exchanges have provided the necessary convenience for mass adoption, providing a way to get your magic beans in exchange for real money without much hassle. Decentralized systems are inherently more complicated than centralized ones and have a harder time gaining traction in the general population (see Mastodon's adoption in the wake of Twitter's turmoil).

0xAFFFF··on Show HN: Merge to earn – reward system for open source development
"I'll solve this problem using cryptos", congrats you now have 34 problems and 92 security issues.
0xAFFFF··on DontBuyDell.com
The XPS 13 I bought a few years ago ended up being a decent development machine, with a price point hard to match for the form factor and specs. And the Dell crapware on it was relatively low.

What are good alternatives for non-Apple slim 13' laptops with good screen real estate, low weight, loads of RAM and a decent price range?

0xAFFFF··on Why I Don't Use Netscape (1999)
That's the Turbo button on older Intel machines, that could slow your processor roughly to the speed of a 8086.

I discovered this playing the old DOS RPG Drakkhen, where there was a tower with a shark in its moat, circling around. It would jump and eat your characters if they happened to cross the bridge at the wrong moment. The funny thing is its speed was based on the processor clock (the game was released in 1989) and if you played the game with a faster processor, the shark would be too fast to be avoided. Push the turbo button, reduce clock speed, problem solved.

0xAFFFF··on Do you remember Ultima Online?
> You can never again get an un-jaded MMO population. Players have since been transformed into minmax ultragreedy automatons. No game can simulate the old players.

World of Warcraft Classic is an excellent illustration of this. Players trained by playing on retail or private servers for years and an unlimited supply of information, strategies and minmaxing guides have radically changed the experience.

For most guilds, the first contact with Molten Core was a difficult one, brutal even, despite having decent gear. Classic guilds can clear the raid with subpar stuff and even underleveled players at speeds we couldn't reach at the time.

So yeah, something died along the way of people discovering, playing and mastering MMOs and that's not coming back.

0xAFFFF··on In 2019 RX470 were $70, RX580 $100
Nvidia does set the price for Founders Edition cards sold under their own name though, although they only account for a small part of the overall card supply.
0xAFFFF··on Queen Elizabeth II has died
A lot of colonial atrocities happened during Elizabeth II's reign, directly under her rule. Afaik, Vietnam War was well over when Barack Obama became president.
