Yeah I think we've both changed a ton from who we were when we met but we've both become better people, so either we're lucky or we just have a healthy relationship

How the tables turn. Have we forgotten that Snowden revealed all the phone companies handed over data/back doors to the NSA except TMobile?

There is no perfect carrier; the best you can do is pick the one least likely to sell you out or get hacked today.

I'm in my mid 30s and been with my wife since I was 15

The issue is that people aren't married to their best friends. You have to like the person more than you love them.

How is it artificially expensive? Is natural gas an infinite free resource now? Do we ignore the oil/gas subsidies?

Individual consumers? I shouldn't think that's true

Oban will let you choose which servers the jobs can execute on, and you could do the same with your own app code

> Queue Control — Queues can be started, stopped, paused, resumed and scaled independently at runtime locally or across all running nodes (even in environments like Heroku, without distributed Erlang).

0x000000001··on How we got to LiveView
very true, but the abstraction is pretty useful
0x000000001··on How we got to LiveView
It prevents unnecessarily moving data around. And if you're running the whole stack on the same server with Sideqik you're dealing with interrupts and memory copies between processes; in Elixir it's all within the same allocated memory and nothing gets copied. Plus it's another service you don't have to monitor because it's automatically monitored by BEAM.
0x000000001··on How we got to LiveView
In Elixir you'd use Oban instead of sidkiq and you get more performance and it scales out horizontally with your app. Each new instance of your app is essentially a new sideqik server as a bonus

edit: > BEAM, OTP, concurrency, this whole thing is solved with the current fashion of devops teams and kubernetes.

This is a hilarious statement which I hope is satire

Endpoint == instance of phoenix webserver. Changing things in the endpoint gives you WAF-like control and you can do some early footwork here and store useful data in conn[:private] for you to use later in the modules called in your router

You can have multiple routers. I just built a thing where foo.com uses one router for the main site and *.foo.com is something else.

0x000000001··on Ask HN: What can I do to actively fight climate change?
Climate change can't be fought on a personal level. That's just propaganda to shift responsibility onto the individual consumer and there are plenty of bleeding hearts out there that eat it up and conjure up guilt for something out of their control on a macro level

0x000000001··on Telegram emerges as new dark web for cyber criminals
Telegram could support group chats that are encrypted, only that you can only be in that group chat from one device. I would greatly prefer that solution. Wouldn't you?
0x000000001··on El Salvador’s Bitcoin law – the system doesn’t work and the public hates it
You could argue the same for Strike -- sending $USD or BTC between users on Strike doesn't use lightning, but if you want to send to a user not on Strike it uses Lightning.

Or Cash App by Square or Venmo by Paypal -- when you send Bitcoin to another user it's just moved internally in their accounting, not on the blockchain.

0x000000001··on iOS 15
Every major iOS update adds more functionality that consumes more CPU cycles even in the background. Unless something strictly requires new hardware to work, they include the features.

Maybe if Apple refused to support new features on old hardware it would solve this issue, but then you just anger users who are forced to buy new hardware to get a new feature...

0x000000001··on El Salvador’s Bitcoin law – the system doesn’t work and the public hates it
They're using the lightning network on top of Bitcoin for instant transactions and less than 1 cent fees.

If Bitcoin equals cash, Lightning is Venmo

The lightning basically network syncs to Bitcoin in large atomic updates to limit fees.

Hope that helps

0x000000001··on Telegram emerges as new dark web for cyber criminals
No, you can E2EE on all clients. But Secret Chats are always a 1:1 session between devices. You can't start a Secret Chat on one device and continue on another.

This might seem like an inconvenience but it avoids the pitfall leading to the recent Matrix exploits...
