0cf8612b2e1e··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
Depends on the nature of the agreement and the need for energy. In a load shedding event, the power company may want to cut useless residential consumers so as to prioritize hospitals. From a maximal good perspective, it is better that the hospital is running than I get to run my AC when the grid is straining.

Net metering rates are pretty poor, so I would guess not much outside of extreme grid instability. Although, you then might want to selfishly hoard the juice for yourself.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
As a consumer, would you want the extra usage on your battery? Those extra cycles have to cause some additional degradation to the system, but I do not know how much.
0cf8612b2e1e··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
There is already tooling to automatically pick models within an organization. Eventually it could be as easy as flipping a switch in group policy that forces everyone to switch to the cheaper models.

Insane pricing pressure on the horizon. Even if big companies will not go with open weight models, the threat will be ever present that they can instantly flip flop on providers.

0cf8612b2e1e··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
Indeed. The global production was closely aligned with consumption. Even if everything became normal tomorrow, there just isn’t enough slack capacity to make up for the loss over anything but years.

The Strait was moving 20M bpd. Say with some over production and clever rerouting, the world was only at a 10M bpd deficit. This has been happening for six months now or 180x10M bpd = 1800M barrels that were never taken out of the ground.

Which is to say, you would need the world production to over produce by 10M bpd from previous levels for six months just to break even. That is not feasible. After this crisis, I suspect many governments will wish their SPRs were larger.

I don’t know what GP is smoking. Most people do not maintain a relationship with a drug dealer. Legal access available from a convenient store front unlocks plenty of users who did not want the legal risk or hassle.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Windows 11½
Do you happen to be running Ubuntu? They have made updates terrible in their effort to try and make snaps a thing. I experience far less grief on other distros.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Don't couple your Go code to GitHub
Google runs a monorepo which makes that kind of organization possible. Most companies are going to have a mismatch of teams using incompatible library versions.

Pick your poison. Each approach has some seriously negative trade offs in the extremes.

0cf8612b2e1e··on On caring for user data: NeoVim caused Vim undo files to be deleted
POSIX vi is so barebones that nobody* wants that.

Bare vi does not have windows, visual selection mode, multiple level undo, color schemes, etc.

NVim wants to improve some defaults, which cannot be done if it is beholden to all legacy code. That being said, I still think this specific undo example is insane.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Factorio that you can touch
Is it possible Factorio is handicapped because of the perspective? I saw a post by the team that said the visual perspective was a mistake that caused endless headaches to accommodate. Things don’t perfectly align which bubbles up everywhere.

Have not played Shapez.

If you find a person/company/agent odious, why would you want to financially support them?

0cf8612b2e1e··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
Further, Japan is especially hard hit by the Strait closing. Toyota may have thought they had years before they had to go fully EV, but the world has forced their hands. They need to be offering options today.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Owners mourn spoiled food after firmware update bricks Samsung smart fridges
All the time? I don’t know if it is still true, but at one point Zappos had free returns. I know a few women who would buy a range of sizes, keep the one that fits, return the rest.

There was a Seinfeld joke to this effect that men just take whatever clothing, even if it barely fits. Women are likely to be choosier and insist on a good match. Some might intentionally mix and match shoe sizes if one foot is bigger than the other (leaving the store with a mismatched pair)

0cf8612b2e1e··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
We can wait for their profitability numbers, assuming it happens.

Regardless, those claim to have a maximum draw of 250kw. That’s one to two terrestrial data rack. Cute.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
He is free to launch his own space GPU if he is so confident it is profitable*.

I will take it as a given that the Google engineers know what they are doing, and their first version can only run for 15 minutes before it needs to shut down to cool.

*Profitability requiring that other Musk controlled companies do not pay for the service at elevated rates in a classic self dealing scheme.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Google’s Project Suncatcher to put ML infrastructure in space
That is not a fake argument, but real physics. Yes, you can design out X kw can be dissipated by this much radiators, but that adds an enormous quantity of mass, more than the solar panels that feed it.

If you are trying to generate a profit, every extra kg puts you further in the red. It still costs over $1000/kg of mass to get into orbit.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
I knew I should have calculated it before running my mouth. Still, a single drive is a sufficient media library for most people.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Two-tier encryption in the UK
Exactly my question as well.

Especially since big tech is steaming ahead to mandating passkeys that only they are allowed to control/backup. Not long until all governments could intercept your passwords to all services.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
I think we need to segregate data hoarders from people who want maybe 100-200 movies. At pre-insane levels, $8k of storage would have been petabytes of non mirrored space. Back in the day, I routinely watched movies compressed to fit on a CD at 700mb. Sure, that is now laughable quality, but most people don’t care about 8k with Dolby digital at 100+Gb per film.

A single 20TB drive can hold quite a bit of media.

Nothing lasts forever. Even nuclear plants have to eventually be decommissioned. Solar panels may be finite, but they give you a long, predictable horizon.

China might be subsidizing solar panels today. We should load up while we can. Let them bear the initial costs. We should also spin up more domestic manufacturing (which was a component of the IRA). If/when foreign sourced solar panels are no longer available, you are in the exact same position you were the day before. All of that already installed generation capacity will continue to function for years before a crisis emerges.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Surprise, Meta's latest AI gimmick is just underpaid humans

Some Meta employees have been praising Muse on X, where AI boosters and AI agents alike can share ever more hype about the technology that’s boiling the Earth. Internally, though, Meta employees realize that a human-driven AI making calls for users has potential for “so much negative PR,” warning co-workers on the board that “It could portray us as ‘their AI is not good enough so they still need humans’ kind of coverage for this launch. Another post, with a fairly lucid handle of the situation, wrote, “Please PLEASE do not release this as-is and at least make this a user preference if we absolutely must launch this. Please.”
Just beautiful.
0cf8612b2e1e··on White House Says Access Is a 'Privilege' in Court Filing Defending Media Ban
Some in the administration certainly are capable of 4D chess, but this event seems like the standard playbook: king got mad, and everyone is scrambling for a non-insane post hoc justification.

Even some Fox News commentators have come out against it, because they do not want an illegal precedent where they could be barred from a Democratic administration.

What is really incredible to me are the lifetime politicians who so quickly sacrifice their integrity to defend these actions. There are few cases that are so clear cut.

There is certainly a lot of talk about micro reactors. I have yet to see anything materialize in the US. The MARVEL test reactor is meant for something puny like 100kw. Nuclear is something that benefits from scale -larger installations are just going to have better economics per watt.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Tokens too cheap to meter
The economics are not there. Solar + batteries are much cheaper per watt today and still improving. Even better, the solar can come online instantly and expand while US nuclear takes twenty years to start generating any energy.

EBITDA might make sense for the resellers who package up open weight models and sell inference. It is not appropriate for the labs who have billions in debt for RAM, new data centers, gobbling up competitors, etc.

Those real debt obligations are going to want to be paid back.
