0cf8612b2e1e··on MS Paint and Photos inivisibly watermark even locally generated output with GUID
Microsoft has also been pushing hard for Recall and recording all local activity forever. Not impossible to imagine that anything looking like a home address “somehow” gets ingested in the telemetry.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Everything I own, owned
That feels like it should only require a single person working on the product to experience and demand an immediate fix.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Microsoft Blames Windows Gaming Issues on RGB Lighting Devices
Win 11 already invalidated quite a few relatively modern systems. As far as I know, it was an arbitrary threshold which has not materialized into an actual hardware requirement to run. As a joke, someone installed Win11 on a computer with a Pentium 4.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Meteoric – Drones that clear clouds over solar farms
We are quickly getting to the point where solar panels are cheaper than fencing. Even if this technology does work, that’s a lot of additional operational overhead vs installing more panels to better handle cloudy days.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Better Batteries
Even when the logging library was introduced, surely someone must have said this is too Java-y.
0cf8612b2e1e··on There's no reason for software to be slow anymore
The delay in filing email in iOS is incredible. Selecting and moving a single message can take over a second, even with animations disabled. Maddening for what should be an instantaneous action.
0cf8612b2e1e··on How to compromise your system with a job interview
I have seen official company recruiters operate exclusively through Gmail or whatever. Third party headhunters may not have anything tied to the sponsoring company.

It is a decent rule, but one which is immediately thwarted by companies going out of their way to constantly look illegitimate.

Desktop gives you a ton more oomph when you need it. Not that it is affordable today, but my personal desktop has 192GB of RAM, 24TB HDD, beefy GPU, and is basically never going to thermal throttle.

If you are just making web apps, it does not matter, but I do data processing where having the headroom can make a big difference.

I do have the cheapest used laptop I could find for those moments when I might require portability.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Malicious Rust crate Arrayref runs a build-time payload
On the other hand, there are some bad Go standard libraries that are frozen in time.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Home batteries are suddenly cheap and everywhere. Here's why
I believe zero will leave your home. Most (all?) systems are required to stop back feeding if the grid reference goes down. Techs working on the poles want to know they will not get electrocuted.
0cf8612b2e1e··on PostgreSQL for Everything
Agreed, but many of the criticisms I am reading here are assuming high scaling requirements and invalidating the approach entirely. When there are many business domains that will comfortably fit within a modestly specced database instance.
0cf8612b2e1e··on PostgreSQL for Everything
I think it would be helpful if some of these posts included scale. There are almost always two groups talking past each other

  - I run my B2B application, Postgres only, and it is perfect for my 50k MAU. No complaints, sleeping soundly with the low complexity and a two man team.
  - I work at FAANG, where we have 1 billion DAU, and this is a joke. Would fall over immediately. The dedicated ops teams for Kubernetes, Elastic, and Redis have never complained about scaling issues.
0cf8612b2e1e··on In Australia, a home battery boom has helped cut wholesale power prices
Good thing he just interviews the technical experts who do. He more or less just gives people in the energy industry a megaphone to discuss the things they are doing.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Choose Boring Technology (2015)
Telekinesis strikes me as the most practically useful. How often I have yearned for a third hand to hold something at a tricky angle. Depending on how fine of control you get, you can also heat/cool matter.

Flight -is it as hard as running? Can I fly faster than I run? Do I get a force field or will I be constantly eating bugs?

0cf8612b2e1e··on People who grew up with high economic connectedness earn more
I should have worked harder to be sure I was not born to a single mother in poverty.
0cf8612b2e1e··on How we used to get jobs: A newspaper classifieds story
Three months! Do you know if that was their standard process or the original candidate fell through?
0cf8612b2e1e··on Greenland issues "strong warning" as American oil firm illegally drills wells
Seize the equipment and people.
0cf8612b2e1e··on A California Program Is Bringing Down the Cost of Heat Pumps by Buying Bulk
California is trying to remove natural gas installations. Without natural gas, heat pumps are the obvious candidate to replace heating/cooling.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Trump signs order calling for spacing out childhood vaccines
They very much used to in that some organizations policy was effectively, “Whatever the government says”. In the last couple of years, more organizations now have competing standards.

On a more direct route, this could impact insurance payments and so the likelihood of children getting the shots. If insurance will only pay for the official vaccine schedule, plenty of parents will delay for economic reasons.

0cf8612b2e1e··on Xbox PC and Game Pass titles coming to Linux through 'Xodus' open-source project
If I were to use this, how likely is it that Microsoft would ban my account?

On the other hand, the Microsoft gaming division has been bleeding money, so they might be willing to look the other way until they are in a better financial situation.

0cf8612b2e1e··on 2027 memory capacity is reportedly sold out
The government interferes with many commodities. Food, oil, rare-earth elements, sugar, airplane frames, etc
0cf8612b2e1e··on Show HN: textlog – A quiet, text-only microblogging platform, open-source, no JS
Maybe OP customized the system “dark theme” to be extra light.
0cf8612b2e1e··on A year of fighting scrapers on my 1.5 million-page website
Do the bots care? Seemingly very little intelligence in many of them. Could be as simple as the site has more pages, so more traffic.

Loot first, ask questions later.

0cf8612b2e1e··on US strikes $1.2B deal to pay German firm to halt offshore wind projects
I suspect wind investment is going to take a decade to recover. Nobody wants to deal with a legal fight if they can avoid it. Offshore wind takes a lot of planning and engineering to deploy. These projects were halted midway, forcing the companies to eat a ton of costs while the construction was sitting idle.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Software development with AI is starting to feel like cooking steak
I am reminded of the speech analysis of the Bush administration talks before the Iraq war. Colin Powell and others knew the intelligence was bad, so predominately shifted to passive voice so as to diffuse blame. “I” am not starting Iraq has WMDs, but there is credible intelligence on which we must act.
0cf8612b2e1e··on GNU Hurd News 2026-Q2
What even is a 20% delta in performance? Like a five year old difference in hardware design.

If I could get a micro kernel with a better security profile than Linux, that doesn’t sound so bad. I could easily be using a ten year old chip for my day to day browsing and probably wouldn’t notice.

0cf8612b2e1e··on The "Disability Dongle": Why Silicon Valley Hates Me and You
That seems pretty anathema to current trends. The underlying refrain is that users are stupid and cannot be trusted. Faster horses and all that.

Shut up monkeys, I will tell you what you want.

0cf8612b2e1e··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
China stopped buying 5.5 million barrels of oil per day (quarter of what was carried in the Strait). Huge reduction that has slowed down the catastrophe by months.
0cf8612b2e1e··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
Exactly how many people do you think are allowed to communicate the status of weapon stockpiles? You are only ever going to get off-the-record comments or a top official letting details slip that should have remained secret.
0cf8612b2e1e··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
There is some brotherhood of coders who will not acknowledge programmers are anything less than perfect. All bugs and errors are the fault of project managers.
