0b0001··on The privacy trade-offs of cheap Android smartphones
I'm not implying they are, my question was honest. I once tried to see where the binary ROM actually came from, and met an astonishing lack of information. Granted, it's a model that isn't really supported.

But it felt that the community is far away from having plausible sources and builds.

I can understand that ultimately this begins with kernel sources that are already just a ZIP archive on some website.

Did anybody have a look at those custom ROMs, with sources from random repositories, modified by anonymous people, build on public build servers, distributed on random file hosting services?

Are they trustworthy?

0b0001··on SIM Vulnerability leads to information disclosure via malicious SMS
That's not the case. SIM cards hold the permanent key for authentication and perform key derivation. Mobile data doesn't pass the SIM card; it does not perform the encryption and decryption.
0b0001··on How do people learn to cook a poisonous plant safely?
Most modern food does not pass.
0b0001··on Why Was Mini USB Deprecated in Favor of Micro USB?
How likely is it to accidentally rip off the inner part of sockets?

It happens, I know that from personal experience. But how does compare with the wear during normal use?

Type C and Lightning nearly look like plug & socket components. I understand type C moved the springs to the plug. But how often do people rip out the socket?

0b0001··on WhatsApp users will start seeing in-app ads within ‘Status’ feature from 2020
You can share files with a maximum size of 100MB. And if I'm not mistaken, those are hosted and available without expiry date.
0b0001··on Group Chats Are Making the Internet Fun Again
You don't /need/ to install it on your computer. Most users won't use it that way anyway, but if you want, you just use the web interface. That doesn't even require any riddles about adding another end-to-end encryption keypair.

Sitting down for an hour and talking about tech /is/ the barrier.
0b0001··on Mail a Letter Online
German authorities use a phrase like "this letter was written by machine and is valid without signature".
0b0001··on Building a Passive IMSI Catcher
2G might be around in Europe for some time, but East Asia already moved on.

East Asia is leading the way in regard to switching-off 2G networks. In certain countries in the region, such as Japan, Macau, Singapore and South Korea, there is no 2G available at all. In Taiwan and Thailand, the major network operators have already phased out 2G with some operators in those countries still offering 2G services for a limited time. https://www.emnify.com/blog/global-2g-phase-out

0b0001··on Building a Passive IMSI Catcher
Not sure about GSM and 3G, but 4G handsets do not transmit the IMSI during cell handover. They exclusively transmit the IMSI during 1) initial connection, that is, when you turn on your smartphone, and 2) upon request by the network.

Active IMSI catchers abuse 2). At this stage of early connection setup, the network is not yet authenticated (the IMSI is required for the authentication). Therefore the smartphone must assume the IMSI request comes from the operator network -- and it cannot tell that it's actually a IMSI catcher.

Case 1) is obviously pretty rare, so it might be a bit boring to perform IMSI catching on 4G.

0b0001··on The Terrifying Potential of 5G
If you're talking to a person 1m away from you, both of you can whisper. If you're 50m away, both of you need to shout.

It's similar to radio transmission.

The closer some base station antenna is, the lower the power your smartphone needs to reach the base station. Having many base stations reduces the effective field power.

Modern LTE and 5G also has something that is called beamforming. Instead of shouting in all directions, the base station restricts the radio signal to the direction of the smartphone. Other won't hear the noise.

It's not correct that "faster data" means there's more "EM things" around us. Basically we use the radio transmission more efficiently.

tldr: if you wanna avoid radiation, be close to a base station where powersaving kicks in.

It's the WHO document that keeps track of your vaccinations.

0b0001··on Two L.A. universities quarantine hundreds students and staff in measles outbreak
Whenever I travel somewhere, my yellow WHO vaccination card comes with me. It fills me with some pride that humankind set up a worldwide organization to aid health of both individual /and society/. It's a good feeling to be protected and protect others.

Is the yellow booklet popular in the US?

0b0001··on Two L.A. universities quarantine hundreds students and staff in measles outbreak
Not everybody can be vaccinated and measles spreads like crazy. If there's one confirmed infection, that person likely already spread the virus for a couple of days before symptoms occur.

Besides, it's a disease that shouldn't be around anymore at all.

This is why it's a big deal.

0b0001··on Termshark – A terminal UI for tshark, inspired by Wireshark
I'm using Wireshark filters to automatically categorize traces (using tshark) and compile a HTML overview. “Wireshark://“ will open the corresponding PCAP then.

Having this integrated in some tool would be great.

0b0001··on Federal appeals court says tire-chalking is unconstitutional
(not US resident, but I see this trend of overthinking and filing lawsuits in the EU, too)

Cases like this add complexity to society where it's not necessary. The solution is to have a society where people believe the officers, and officers who are not nitpicking and mild enough to wait some more minutes.
