0F··on Top Performers Have a Superpower: Happiness
Reading these comments is forehead slap inducing. People think that just because something is mental that it has to do with your mindset, your parents, your this your that.

When a dude can run faster than other people, it’s written off as genetics. When someone is resilient to depression, it’s anything other than genetics. Both cases are the same: it’s just biological.

I’ve been suffering super hard with depression recently and it’s made something clear to me: your mindset is bullshit. It might tip things one way or another but the actual mechanisms of depression will change your life. Everyone will be super humbled when we figure out how to turn off depression, and everyone gets it and everyone experienced on average a 50% boost to their intelligence and productivity. They will be humbled because they will realize that all of that relative suffering was totally pointless and for no other reason than a quirk of evolution. And that some people had it good for absolutely no reason. But it’s exciting to know that this day will come and it can’t come fast enough for me!

0F··on Anime Photography in the Cel Era (2020)
Woah, how do you go about buying that without getting ripped off? That is really cool.
0F··on How Antarctic explorers kept themselves sane on the voyage
There’s a huge number of leads in the search for markers. It’s just that nobody is talking about it. I’ve never met a lay person who had any clue of what’s going on in the space
0F··on How Antarctic explorers kept themselves sane on the voyage
Whether or not you go insane when exposed to emotional stress has nothing to do with your character or personality. It’s biochemical. I hate the way that this article says “it’s impossible to predict who will go insane and who won’t” and it’s universally accepted when it’s not true and is based on untrue and harmful fuzzy thinking. It’s like saying “it’s impossible for man to fly” which may have been true in a practical sense a thousand years ago but it was never actually true. If more people had appreciated that, maybe we would have been flying much earlier.

The reason he says it’s impossible is because he thinks it’s based on subtle aspects of personality traits which are ephemeral and impossible to grasp.

Of course you can predict who will go insane. There are specific biochemical pathways that are responsible. In the future when we have mastered them we will probably find that there are certain obvious traits that correlate strongly to the disposition. It is often the case that the simple truth was hiding right in front of us.

0F··on Ask HN: Have OCD, suffering from extreme procrastination, please help?
Try deep ketosis via ketogenic diet and try high fat carnivore diet. These things are super hyped up right now and seem like scams but they touch upon very real and very powerful metabolic pathways and mechanisms. They have helped many people with severe mental illness including myself.
0F··on Key senators have voted for the anti-encryption EARN IT act
I just called both my senators about this.
0F··on Tell HN: Political topics don’t belong here
I think the difference is that I can’t copy paste the conversation about JavaScript from CNN to HN. I could do that for mainstream political topics.
0F··on Tell HN: Political topics don’t belong here
The recent antiwork thread was definitely not difficult to peg as purely political.
0F··on /r/antiwork: A tragedy of sanewashing and social gentrification
Yes, communism is about that slogan. And anti work is about labor reform. Neither are true in practice.
0F··on Cancer Moonshot initiative restarted by NIH
This doesn’t add up. Collateral damage isn’t a concern in any other cancer treatments. And if fermentation is so necessary, how do people survive being in ketosis for years?
0F··on Tesla FSD beta crashes into object [video]
They aren’t in any danger. The guy driving in the video is crazy and not disengaging when the car is misbehaving. With your hand brushing the wheel, a person can regain full control of the vehicle well before there is any danger. And yes, I would like to see not only Teslas profits go up, because they are the only company doing self driving, I would also just like to see this project move forward. It’s the coolest project in the world and if it succeeds it will save millions upon millions of innocent lives.

Furthermore if you really were so edge-of-your-seat scared of traffic fatalities then Tesla would be at the bottom of your list. Why don’t you go do something about the droves of people that stream out the back of bars and into their cars every night? They kill thousands every year meanwhile Tesla has killed roughly zero people.

0F··on Cancer Moonshot initiative restarted by NIH
There is a lecture on YouTube by a doctor who claims that all cancer cells ferment rather than respirate and that because of this, they are able to be starved with a combination of zero carb diet and a special protein that disrupts the fermentation of another protein that cancer cells can also use. He presents cases where he uses this method to treat a brain cancer patient. I’m on the train and not in a position to find his name or the video. Does anyone have anything to say about this?
0F··on Gut microbe linked to depression in large health study
Micro biome is a literal pile of shit. Please forgive me because I couldn’t resist, but I think it’s massively overhyped and useless. It’s obviously going to be correlated to lots of things. But people measure the rough correlation and take it way too far. There’s nothing there… and if there is then it’s downstream of something more fundamental. Inflammation/metabolomics is the real revolution.
0F··on Tesla FSD beta crashes into object [video]
There is no solution to self driving that doesn’t involve a black box. The safety of the system is easy to measure. When there are fewer interventions than accidents for a solid chunk of time, FSD will be safer. It could eventually reach 1 intervention per hundred thousand accidents, if you would just let them continue.
0F··on Tesla FSD beta crashes into object [video]
And their self driving is miles behind tesla
0F··on Teachers are leaving and few people choosing the field
My dad always told me that during the 40s and 50s children would be paddled for being disrespectful. Students wore uniforms. Parents would be angry at their children if a teacher or administrator scheduled a meeting. The parents would be mad at the kids. it is clear that times have changed dramatically so I think it’s insane to expect the model of the old times to work. If you want a good result for your child then enroll them in a program that is suited for these times. I suspect private school is the only good option.
0F··on What's in a good error message?
“So what makes a good error message then? To me, it boils down to three pieces of information which should be conveyed by an error message:

Context: What led to the error? What was the code trying to do when it failed?

The error itself: What exactly failed?

Mitigation: What needs to be done in order to overcome the error?”

0F··on Play Wordle from Your Terminal
Because the model of apps needs to die. If you have something you want to put out into the world you currently need to write an android app, an iOS app and then any other native formats you want to target. But it’s much better to make it browser based because it’s one and done and it also side-steps all the nonsense with app stores which has been well known lately. If it’s easier and better for the developers then we will have more and better software.

Web assembly and WGPU are coming and when they do it will be the next paradigm after mobile apps. But in order to get to this new glorious paradigm it is necessary for people to be capable of recognizing the value of software even if it’s in the browser and of using it on the scale seen with wordle. It’s just as likely that people would turn their nose up to a browser based software and everything would remain stagnate. So I am glad.

0F··on Play Wordle from Your Terminal
I was so shocked when my family member told me wordle is a website and not an app. I never thought that the masses would go for something like that in the package of a website. It really gives me hope for the future.
0F··on Charles Dickens's code cracked by amateur sleuths
The letter said nothing of interest

“The team found the letter was an appeal by Dickens for someone to intervene over a rejected advertisement.”

The person who deciphered the most bits was a man from San Jose in California and he was honored.
