04rob··on Cherenkov Radiation
One difference is sound can only travel through a medium, so that bit is always implied. Not so with light.

04rob··on Ask HN: A network device that doesn't exist?
I believe what you are looking for is called a multi-WAN router. More specifically, one with a failover function.
04rob··on Daily 'Breath Training' can work as well as Meds to reduce high blood pressure
Anyone able to tell if the study was funded by the device manufacturer?

04rob··on Ready for an N95? Here's how to find a high-quality one that fits you well
This has been studied. A beard does compromise the seal, but to a lesser extent on n95s than in other masks:

04rob··on Google introduces mandatory 2-Step Verification for Google Accounts
Is this really "mandatory" or rather just "opt-out?" My understanding is that it can still be disabled...
04rob··on Show HN: Identify car crash editorial anti-patterns using NLP
Is the source code available? It would be interesting to apply this to reporting on other topics.

As far as suggestions, it would be great to see an explanation of each problem when hovering over it in the text. Also, the colors for the "Object", "Counterfactuals", and "Accident" problems are difficult to distinguish for color-deficient individuals.

04rob··on NSFW++: Amazon's “The Hobbit” (27k+ reviews) listing taken over male sex toy
Unfortunately with comingling of inventory in Amazon warehouses you'd still end up with counterfeits.
04rob··on The censorship of WallStreetBets needs to be a watershed moment for everyone
Ted Cruz is married to Heidi Cruz, a Managing Director at Goldman Sachs [1]. I'm not sure what his angle is but he clearly has a vested interest that may not align with the little guys.

04rob··on Frequent, rapid testing could turn national Covid-19 tide within weeks
Wasn't this the White House strategy? They were doing daily rapid antigen tests, and have had several outbreaks.
04rob··on Russian tourist offered employee $1M to cripple Tesla with malware

04rob··on AIM – Aeronautical Information Manual
I've noticed there seem to be a number of pilots on HN. Anyone know of any hn-like (high quality) communities for pilots or students out there?
04rob··on Why the Cessna is such a badass plane (2019)
You only need a driver's license to meet the medical requirements, but in the US you still need a sport pilot's license to fly light sport, which is most of a "full" private pilot's license.

04rob··on Canadian surgeons urge people to throw out bristle BBQ brushes
"Kevin Gallant, of Summerside, P.E.I., had part of his small intestine removed after he swallowed a bristle from a barbecue brush.

"I was very ill, probably as close to death as you want to be," he said from his home in Summerside, P.E.I.

"The barbecue brush bristle had started to move, so it was trying to come through the wall of my small intestine. So I was told I was very fortunate that they found it, because it would have just pierced through the small intestine into one of my major organs until it found a spot that it would have just killed me."

He still uses a bristle brush, but inspects the barbecue thoroughly after using it."

Why!?!?!?

04rob··on Changes to Trusted Certificate Authorities in Android Nougat
Does this mean that users will no longer be able to MITM most apps on their own phone by installing a custom cert and proxying all requests through another machine?

User-added CAs

Protection of all application data is a key goal of the Android application sandbox. Android Nougat changes how applications interact with user- and admin-supplied CAs. By default, apps that target API level 24 will—by design—not honor such CAs unless the app explicitly opts in. This safe-by-default setting reduces application attack surface and encourages consistent handling of network and file-based application data.

04rob··on Welcome to Mongolia's New Postal System: An Atlas of Random Words
It seems like a major drawback to this approach is that the address for nearby locations have nothing in common. That makes it harder to get a sense of where something is based on the address alone.
04rob··on Show HN: Serverless Messaging App Built with AWS Lambda and Twitter Digits
My colleagues and I built a production-ready iPhone messaging app with a serverless backend. We used Twitter Digits and Cognito for login/user management, API Gateway + Lambda for backend compute, and DynamoDB + S3 for storage.

We had an overall good experience, other than some complications with Cognito/Digits. Happy to share any lessons learned or answer any questions!

04rob··on Show HN: Nudj – One Touch iPhone Messaging App
My friends and I created a new iPhone messaging app focused on speed and simplicity. You can send or respond to a request for a picture, location, yes/no, or quantity in as little as one touch. We'd love the community's feedback on the landing page or app itself. BTW, this app was also an experiment for serverless architecture, and utilizes AWS Lambda for the entire backend.
04rob··on National Geographic magazine shifts to for-profit status with Fox partnership
Great point! They've definitely drifted towards more "entertainment-focused" shows as of late.
04rob··on National Geographic magazine shifts to for-profit status with Fox partnership
National Geographic is a tremendously respected brand and is one of the last quality educational TV channels that hasn't "sold out" by making cheap reality shows (See History Channel, The Learning Channel, Discovery, etc). I really hope this doesn't change that.
04rob··on Ask HN: Software gigs involving small, scripting-type tasks?
Not sure why you want to so quickly discount data science, dev ops, etc. But you could also consider many research areas in computer science that use light scripting to prove out new algorithms and techniques. Another area is computer security/pen testing.
04rob··on From Kafka to ZeroMQ for real-time log aggregation

04rob··on Cyber crime: states use hackers to do digital dirty work
