I've listened to a interview with a Polish writer Krystyna Kurczab-Redlich about her book about Putin. She was in Russia gathering material and she had a Russian friend who worked in army. She asked him if he's afraid of dying and he told her: "your job is much more dangerous".

I’ve seen this referred to as violence as a political tool.
