We won't be able to recognize intelligence if it is not anthropocentric. The Earth could be sentient but we won't be able to tell.

That is the premise of Solaris, from Stanislaw Lem. Great book, and movie too (the original, not the remake).

I think David Brin's novel Earth had something similar - a book that I mostly remember for its version of WW3 being everyone vs Switzerland.
