zyl1n··on Meta Movie Gen
All the pieces are in place to create a primitive holodeck. I hope meta continues to invest/burn billions in this space.
zyl1n··on AWS Lambda Web Adapter
As you might have guessed, connection pools don't work well with Lambda. For database connection pool, they came up with another chargeable service, RDS Proxy, to fix the problem created by Lambda :)
zyl1n··on 40% of US electricity is now emissions-free
What does natural gas have to do with greenwashing? It is naturally occurring gas; different from other hydrocarbon gas that is man-made.
zyl1n··on .NET Blazor
As a java backend dev, I am envious that Java doesn't have a modern equivalent of Blazor.
zyl1n··on Run ChatGPT-like LLMs on your laptop in 3 lines of code
Just yesterday, I found out that Simon Wilson's name is Simon Willison.
zyl1n··on WebLLM: Llama2 in the Browser
I got prefill: 26.9719 tokens/sec, decoding: 18.8827 tokens/sec on M1 Max 32GB laptop for llama 2 7b chat f32. Not bad.
zyl1n··on Accessing Llama 2 from the command-line with the LLM-replicate plugin
I am not familiar with Replicate, but based on their website, they charge per GPU type. I didn't see the GPU type set in the example. Is it baked in as part of the "a16z-infra/llama13b-v2-chat" model?

zyl1n··on Moving fast with the core Vim motions
Someone should implement an editor for Apple's Vision Pro that moves the cursor using eye tracking.
zyl1n··on My startup crossed $2M/yr and now co-founder is going for a power grab
"CEO and COO said that didn't want to get involved and it was for me and CUXO to sort it out ourselves." That's a bad CEO.
zyl1n··on PyPI new user and new project registrations temporarily suspended
As someone who straddles both Python and Java world, I don't seem hear this kind of malicious packages problem with Maven (central) as I do with PyPI. What could be the difference? Perhaps Java world is full of old farts like me doing mundane thing with a handful of well established libraries.
zyl1n··on AWS staff spending ‘much of their time ’optimizing customers' clouds'
Cloud is a service that moves CapEx to OpEx. What ever cost savings it may provide is a side effect of this move. If you moved to cloud and do not see any savings, that means you have sized planned your capacity well. But there are a lot of businesses that cannot plan ahead for various reasons, and cloud provides value to them.
zyl1n··on Ask HN: What are your optimistic takes on the SWE job market post AI?
Perhaps we should look at how CAD impacted draughtsmen. Their job scope basically got folded into engineers'. There are probably a lot of us who are software draughtsmen.
zyl1n··on BlindAI API: An open-source and privacy-first OpenAI alternative
OpenAI is in a very good place if potential competitors have to use its name to explain their services.
zyl1n··on Crab crisis in Bering Sea a sign of ‘borealization’
Fisheries are closed for certain types of crabs. They are switching to other types.
zyl1n··on Show HN: Turn your Pandas dataframe into a Tableau-style UI for visual analysis
This is really cool, but I wonder if it will get into legal trouble because it looks very much like Tableau.
zyl1n··on Ask HN: What is the best source to learn Docker in 2023?
Julia Evan's How Containers Work! zine: https://jvns.ca/blog/2020/04/27/new-zine-how-containers-work...

It demystified a lot of docker features for me.

zyl1n··on Show HN: Videobug – The time travel debugger for JVM
What's the oldest version of JDK supported for this?
zyl1n··on Rule-Based Expert Systems (1984)
First sentence of chapter 1: "Artificial Intelligence (AI) is that branch of computer science dealing with symbolic, nonalgorithmic methods of problem solving. "

Interesting how it's almost opposite of what the field is now.

zyl1n··on Narco Submarine Found in Spain
OP probably means the title "Narco Submarine Found in Spain" sounds like a password from the comic.
zyl1n··on Narco Submarine Found in Spain

zyl1n··on Facebook takes down main page of Myanmar military
If military never answered to her or took orders, control all the courts like you said, what is the point of the coup?
zyl1n··on Amazon establishes new Counterfeit Crimes Unit
Reading these comments, it feels a bit strange that I have never gotten a counterfeit product from Amazon, and I bought a dozen items from Amazon within last two months: RAM, electric kettle, wall clock, books, phone case, humidifier, ramen and fresh groceries (like fruits and cheese). The only problem I had was a few books were dented in corner of spines a bit. Is this phenomenon country specific? Or is it because I order only amazon prime items? Perhaps my luck will run out one day :)
zyl1n··on Show HN: Foreign Exchange Rate Web App
About a month ago, there was a post on HN for free foreign exchange rates API (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22979288)

The API was quite easy to understand and inspired me to do a one-day build challenge of making a web UI for the rates as I learn Javascript and D3.js.

Things I want to do but couldn't fit into deadline: better mobile reponsive, making it a "PWA".

Feedback is much appreciated.

zyl1n··on Ask HN: Why isn’t visual programming a bigger thing?
At work, I am required to use SPSS modeler which has visual programming model, and I mainly dislike it for the reason of not having a way to easily diff and find out what has changed.

That aside, I think most of us actually code in visual programming style, but all the "visuals" are constructed in our head on the fly as we read the code text. So how good you are at coding maybe a function of how well you can represent these structures and how long you can maintain them in your head. Maybe an external tool that does it for us produces a representation doesn't mesh well with the internal representation for programmers experienced in text based programming.

zyl1n··on Singapore to Open Source Bluetooth Contact Tracing
Not an iOS developer either, but I think apps cannot make new bluetooth connections in background, which is a requirement for this app.
zyl1n··on Ask HN: Full-on machine learning for 2020, what are the best resources?
Be sure to check out 3Blue1Brown's linear algebra series as well. (Maybe after you've built your own MNIST network) Blew my mind when I made the connection that each layer in a dense NN is learning how to do a linear transformation + a non-linear "activation" function.
zyl1n··on Introduction to Web Development (2018)
I did a quick glance but didn't find a section covering basics of HTTP... maybe there should be one before AJAX or node.js sections
zyl1n··on Show HN: Bravo – Turn designs into native iOS and Android apps without coding
Congrats! Any reason you didn't go with clojure/clojurescript for backend also?
zyl1n··on Developer Roadmaps
