zx8080··on Google has stopped pushing Git tags for some Android source code
Is it about Android code?

Could this be related to the upcoming change (close) of the apk side-loading?

zx8080··on Tell HN: Cloudflare silently injects its analytics when you switch nameservers
MITM attack, that's what it is. Why is this not in the news? Ah, no one cares.
zx8080··on A spectre is haunting Unicode
What is the rationale to the unifying direction of changes in Unicode?
zx8080··on uBlock Origin is giving up the fight to keep ads off Facebook
> businesses are run by people, and all these entrepreneurs are making explicit decisions to abuse their fellow human beings

What they do is actually a robbery of others' time, privacy, screen space, money, and freedom. All for profit.

zx8080··on Hardware backdoors in some x86 CPUs
Title should be: ..in VIA C3 processors.
zx8080··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
Tracing, tracking and control of the population. It's who control what apps run on a device. And what (spyware) the next update brings.
zx8080··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
What? It's banks.
zx8080··on I stopped trusting USB-C cable labels and started testing them
The hell Apple or Google cares.
zx8080··on I stopped trusting USB-C cable labels and started testing them
For those who seeks a data speed, it's not. It's about power ratings, not data transfer.
zx8080··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
If only a few techies will be able to use Linux phone, banks will freely lock payment services access down to two platforms: ios and android. No way out, it's happening right now (in the name of "security", of course, but surprisingly it does not stop scam from happening).

Web will be locked down too, via secureboot stack browser integration (not -s, it's already actually monopolised to chrome only, as FF lives on full life support from Google).

Very sad how it was allowed to happen so easily.

zx8080··on Why Book Corners won't sync contributions back to OpenStreetMap
> you can make an OSM account, go to the website, click, add a thing, hit submit, done. Someone will review it.

I will share an unpopular opinion: thil will only make a freeworkforce for those projects who profit from using OSM. And the OSM has surprisingly unreliable data quality for walking around even in the popular tourist places like Tokyo or Kyoto, or New York. I've tried, and it's so worse than GMaps (or Bing) to being completely unusable. No work hours of Starbucks, no local dining cafe, no menu contributions.

It's great for the trail and hike outdiors, sure. But that's very different from the city map, as the nature featutes rarely change, not like city POIs.

zx8080··on YC founder asks desperate job seekers to tattoo themselves for an interview
Is it modern slavery already or more nuances required?
zx8080··on Google has abandoned Google News?
Google is killing the habit of googling or searching in their userbase, in favour of using LLMs. No surprise most of the previous era google services will be thrown out of the window in the very near future.
zx8080··on Google has abandoned Google News?
The frog is almost boiled.
zx8080··on Investigating three real-world incidents in our cybersecurity evaluations
Was there any customer data lost?
zx8080··on Google will expand age checks on Android worldwide till the end of the year
So that they make decisions even more disconnected from reality than now? Sure, why not, that does not harm. Cannot be much worse anyway.
zx8080··on I flagged two research papers for fake authors and both were accepted as orals
So in sum:

- it did not work before because greed

- will not work anymore because AI

Is human science dead?

zx8080··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
> patchy

Negligent is a better word. Even opensource linux support for bluetooth is way better for the same devices.

zx8080··on Google will expand age checks on Android worldwide till the end of the year
In this case will it be a transparent traceability and the mapping to user real identity close to 100%?
zx8080··on Removing React.js from the codebase and adapting Htmx for UI interactivity (2023)
It's a blatant lie and bullshit. A github MR can be 5Mb size and my laptop has 64Gb RAM (swappable 3x of that to SSD if really needed). There's NO need for progressive loading there.

Another example is filtered goods at the local electronics store webfront. Progressive loading without ability to go directly to page 7 wastes my time if I know that what I need is there as each load of 10 items takes time. But of course this pattern increases some shitty OKR in time-spent-on-website. Hate this.

zx8080··on Removing React.js from the codebase and adapting Htmx for UI interactivity (2023)
No worse thing for ux as the infinite scroll. As it breaks the native cmd-f/ctrl-f page search and makes loading progressively slow.

zx8080··on Ruff v0.16.0 – Significant new updates – 413 default rules up from 59
> Nobody reads PRs anymore with the agentic development velocity.

Tokens are burnt, that's the most important part. And with more of the generated shitty code there will be more tokens spent in the future.

zx8080··on W4ME Station – a WASM-4 runtime for Java ME phones
> Both release variants stay below 300 KB.

> W4ME Station brings unmodified WebAssembly cartridges to CLDC 1.1 / MIDP 2.0 devices, including feature phones from the mid 2000s.

300kb is a _way_ too huge for most of the feature phones.

zx8080··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
> How does that work?

It works well. For those who sell tokens.

As much as the (agentic) processes are more and more complex it guarantees that more tokens will be sold tomorrow. Sell tokens FTW!

zx8080··on If coding has been solved, why does software keep getting worse?
MacOS is the worst. I got to reconnect my bose bluetooth headset 3-4 times every time I have a zoom call because no sound.

On contrast, my linux laptop does not have any issue with the same headset and it gets connected instantly.

zx8080··on Terence Tao's ChatGPT conversation about the Jacobian Conjecture counterexample
Just relax and welcome the nondeterministic world as a non-programmer. Also, forget what you were taught in Theory of Computation, no one needs it anymore. AI will do everything for you. /s

Marketing for huge bucks sounds like this.

You will own nothing and will be happy (that you are still alive). Probably.
