zwilliamson··on Docker acquires Tilt
I love Tilt! Been using it for over a year and can’t imagine life without it at this point. Congratulations to the Tilt team. Seems like a good partnership.
zwilliamson··on Kindle, ePub, and Amazon’s love of reinventing wheels
Anyone else enjoy kindle book <-> audible narration feature? Curious if the Kindle platform is the only solid option for this style of reading/listening.
zwilliamson··on Taking a break from social media makes you happier and less anxious
Cal Newport's time-block planner saved my career. At the beginning of the pandemic I was struggling to focus at work, like many others. His time-block planner got me back into action and feeling more productive.

https://www.timeblockplanner.com

This video covers how the planner works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eff9h1WYxSo

I love the quick "Shutdown" routine at the end of each day, so I can easily switch back to life outside of work without dragging work thoughts with me.

zwilliamson··on Netflix loses subscribers for the first time in 10+ years
I would come back if they added the entire criterion collection and made it available on DVD/BluRay. Streaming access is too much of a fire hose. I like a little build up and anticipation with my movies.
zwilliamson··on The Charles Mingus CAT-alog (1972)
When it comes to cat health and preventative care a lot can be gleaned from the book The Forever Dog (https://foreverdog.com). There is a lot we can do as care takers to prevent health issues and not just monitor for them.

The summary of the book is "Eat less, eat fresher, and move more and more often"

Perhaps with cats the movement part maybe not be as applicable, but the eating fresher (no processed foods) and eating less would make a huge difference it a cats life. Maybe someone will write Forever Cat?

zwilliamson··on The Unix Magic Poster
Would be awesome to see the original artist open source the art work for official download, and perhaps for a price which could go towards some OSS development. I’m sure people would pay for it.
zwilliamson··on Amtrak's 2035 map has people talking about the future of U.S. train travel
Why don’t we invest in new bleeding edge transportation infra like Hyperloop? This plan they are proposing is something we should have done in the 1920s.
zwilliamson··on Travis CI's new pricing plan threw a wrench in my open source works
I moved my open source repos to GitHub Actions from TravisCI after experiencing 6+ hour build queues. So far, GitHub Actions has been great and I love the Super Linter!
zwilliamson··on FreePN: Open-source peer-to-peer VPN service
Anyone else getting "NetworkError when attempting to fetch resource. Please refresh and try again." when trying to sign up for email notifications for MacOS?
zwilliamson··on Physics is stuck
Shout out to the sophons from Trisolaris interfering with research.
zwilliamson··on That coworker who never stops refactoring
I believe they call this person a “catfish” developer
zwilliamson··on Ask HN: Am I the longest-serving programmer – 57 years and counting?
If you ever start a blog, I would love to read the stories and experiences you are willing to share.
zwilliamson··on A small restaurant owner on Google, DoorDash, and Grubhub
Is there a way as an end user I can filter out all results driven by DoorDash, GrubHub and the likes on Google Search? Or perhaps would I be better off using DuckDuckGo?

Seems like this might be neat browser extension to help people get search results that point you directly to a restaurant website. Perhaps following the ad blocker concept; restaurant middleman blocker.

zwilliamson··on Show HN: Time Cop – A simple, private, open-source time tracking app
How cool would it be if you could partner with Jean-Claude Van Damme on this?
zwilliamson··on Ask HN: What's the best corporate password manager?
BitWarden. It is open source and you can self-host the solution too! I manage my own self hosted solution for my family on Digital Ocean. Minimal maintenance and I can see it easily scaling to meet full organizational needs.
zwilliamson··on Letting slower passengers board airplane first is faster, study finds
I don’t care about the speed of boarding. I get why airlines would though. I care about overhead bin space. It would be interesting to see if “slow boarders” also bring on more carry on luggage than average.
zwilliamson··on Ask HN: Are books worth it?
Your book review site looks nice. Thanks for sharing.

However, the order of books in Alastair's Revelation Space series doesn't match up with I found on Goodreads

https://www.scifibooklove.com/book_series/revelation_space/ vs https://www.goodreads.com/series/56392-revelation-space

I recently started the series and went with Redemption Ark as book 2 (according to Goodreads) Hope I'm not missing too much going with the Goodreads ordering :/

zwilliamson··on Ask HN: Best books you read in the past decade?
Children of Time and Children of Ruin were excellent reads
zwilliamson··on Ask HN: Best books you read in the past decade?
I just finished Revelation Space and really enjoyed it.
zwilliamson··on Ask HN: Best books you read in the past decade?
The Three-Body Problem series by Chixin Liu

* The Three-Body Problem * The Dark Forest * Death's End

Expanded my perception of life, death, love, time and our potential purpose, via some very well written fiction (space opera style). Chixin Liu nailed it!

zwilliamson··on Ask HN: Best books you read in the past decade?
An epic story that goes far beyond hard sci-fi. The 3 book series takes a bit of time to finish, but is well worth it.
zwilliamson··on Ask HN: How do you deal with depression?
I would recommend reading Michael Pollan's book, "How to Change Your Mind" https://michaelpollan.com/books/how-to-change-your-mind/

He explores the new and old science behind Psychedelics and their ability to cure depression, addiction and other aliments of the mind.

Another active study in this field; Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) https://maps.org/

zwilliamson··on 75% of med students are on antidepressants, stimulants, or both? (2017)
Yes, they are not a guaranteed solution. But research from Hopkins University School of Medicine and others show they are more effective than any current pharmaceutical drugs.
zwilliamson··on 75% of med students are on antidepressants, stimulants, or both? (2017)
I just read "How to Change your Mind" by Michael Pollan. It appears we are inching closer to freeing psychedelic drugs (psilocybin and LSD for example) for medical use via psychedelic therapist. Michael goes over a lot of new research and revisits older research (1950s - 1970s) showing the effectiveness of these drugs when administered by a professional to help cure depression and break addictions to substances like alcohol and nicotine.
zwilliamson··on Start with a Website, Not a Mobile App
"Namecheap domain is less than $10/month" I believe the author meant $10/year.
zwilliamson··on 99 Bottles of OOP
Congrats on the release Sandi and Katrina! I am looking forward to reading it! Just purchased and downloaded.
zwilliamson··on SyntaxDB – Quickly look up syntax for programming languages
Bash is a go to scripting language for most. It would be great to see it on here.
zwilliamson··on Amazon Alexa Comes to Pebble Core
I was a happy user of the Pebble Time. However, I recently decided to switch to the Fitbit Blaze to participate in some physical activity challenges with friends and family. So far the experience with the Fitbit Blaze has been bad.

* Music control intergration with Android is flaky and rarely work * Face of the watch is hard to see outdoors * Minimal Android phone notification integrations / settings * Watch face selection is minimal * No third party app market

My Pebble felt like a very well crafted device, with solid software backing it. It wasn't perfect but when compared to the Fitbit Blaze it is far superior.

I am really looking forward to coming back to Pebble Time 2 at this point.

zwilliamson··on Aptly: Owning Your Debian Distribution
Aptly rocks. I put this together for those who use Vagrant and want to test out some of Aptly's commands and functionality.

https://github.com/sepulworld/aptly-vagrant

It also sets up a Jenkins server so you can test out some build jobs that interact with Aptly.

I am looking forward to Aptly's REST API. Also on the roadmap is the ability to manage Yum repositories.
