zweifuss··on Pigz: Parallel gzip for modern multi-processor, multi-core machines

zweifuss··on Pigz: Parallel gzip for modern multi-processor, multi-core machines
That is true and seems easily half the total size with small and similar files, but it also means you have to unpack the whole archive when you need the last file in a tarball.

AFAIK the gzip command still cannot compress directory information and therefore needs tar in front of it if you want to retain a folder structure.

One way to slow down the aging of batteries is to charge them only up to 80%, but this is not the only factor that affects their lifespan. Other factors include the temperature of the environment, the power consumption, and the quality of the battery materials and manufacturing process, which may be hard or impossible to know before buying.

zweifuss··on On a great interview question
You can be an excellent player with a likable personality and your chances of getting a spot in any high-profile orchestra are still less than 20%.
zweifuss··on In 2019, Volkswagen decided to create a car OS. How’s that going?
E³ bedeutete im besten Denglisch End-to-End-Elektronik-Architektur.

So it's end-to-end electronics architecture in German.

zweifuss··on How Climate Scenarios Lost Touch with Reality
Why exactly is it bad science if the most pessimistic scenario is slightly more pessimistic than reality?

IPPC reports are too conservative because insufficient attention has been paid to the importance of tipping points, feedback loops, and outlier events forecasts. The nature of consensus building has tended to marginalize more extreme scenarios.

Humanity already has a non-zero probability that wars and general political trends will reverse technological progress and waste the resources needed to adapt to climate change and transform the economy. Then the RPC8.5 scenario might be too optimistic, not too pessimistic.

zweifuss··on “Clean” code, horrible performance
I see 30-seconds delays in a vanilla project on Jira cloud sometimes. Hardware was expensive in 2019.

If you use a subtitle (or similar) as a watermark, it can be easily removed. So why should you watermark at all? So the answer is probably no.
zweifuss··on How to create portable Linux binaries
Before Windows XP (2002) "DLL Hell" used to be a real problem too. Also a lot of current EXEs need at least Windows 7 SP1 to run.

I can't stomach tilt trains. But otherwise trains are better than automobiles or coaches. Flights with turbulence are also not good for my stomach.
zweifuss··on Ask HN: Concepts that clicked only years after you first encountered them?
1. Object-oriented programming. At that time, no one gave a clear explanation of what was actually meant by it and how to implement it. The various schools of OOP often did not acknowledge the existence of other (heretical) schools, which caused a lot of confusion in my brain. Critical voices were hounded and silenced. Also, the gap between implementation and theory was always quite wide. I did not know Smalltalk at that time and have not seen it in use to this day. 2. Electromagnetic fields. I'm still not sure I understand them. I found this video helpful: https://youtu.be/XoVW7CRR5JY
zweifuss··on Airlines lobbying FAA to have only one pilot in the cockpit
Yes, we can do it, but have a look at the data: https://www.dronetechuav.com/post/causes-of-uav-loss

I don't think that argument flies.

zweifuss··on Placing #1 in Advent of Code with GPT-3
An unguided, yet somehow planned and modelled economy?

AIs with total surveillance perhaps? Would need weather-control too or giant surpluses squirreled away in a distributed fashion.

Some kind of ascetic commune, but at global scale? Might work in a military setup when fighting the alien invasion.

zweifuss··on ChatGPT produces made-up nonexistent references
I did ask both questions and found the answer to "Why did large SMP systems become mainstream?" more coherent. Broken down into bullet points, the arguments given for both questions would be AFAIK correct.

> "Pascual Jordan was a literal Nazi and a significant participant in the destruction of the centuries-old German mathematics and fundamental physics community (and the respective refugee-fueled rise of the American one)."

That's an oversimplified account of his role in the Nazi era.

zweifuss··on Ask HN: What do you wear on your feet when at home?
Classic Birkenstock two-strap sandals and cotton socks. Wool socks when it's cold.
zweifuss··on Gut epithelial barrier damage caused by dishwasher detergents and rinse aids
Ca²⁺ is the more important ion, since limescale is mainly calcium carbonate (CaCO₃). Otherwise, the explanation is fine.

The exchange of the ions is driven be the difference in concentration between water and resin surface. It works both ways, but Ca²⁺ is preferred (=stronger bonds) by the binding groups (e.g. carboxylate salts). That's why a concentrated Na⁺-brine is needed to flush out the calcium ions.

zweifuss··on The sad history of Unicode printf-style format specifiers in Visual C++ (2019)
Microsoft software supports UTF-16 (not only UCS-2) everywhere these days (yes, even in COM). But you can probably still find errors here and there.

I have no problem with saving text files in UTF-8 and normally do. I just wish SCSU was handled by COM by default as well and not only sometimes.

zweifuss··on The sad history of Unicode printf-style format specifiers in Visual C++ (2019)
I have asked myself the same question. However, I observed that the switch from UCS-2 to true UTF-16 was already very bumpy, with strange bugs and tons of edge cases that only got significantly better in Windows 8. A forced switch to UTF-8 would likely have broken ANSI strings.

Languages such as PHP didn't get true UTF-8 support until 2015, Python in 2008 (and that switch took a decade), and Java and JavaScript continue to use UTF-16 as default strings.

The wastefulness of UTF-16 is mostly remedied by Unicode Compression (SCSU), which can be much shorter than UTF-8 in languages like Hindi and Chinese.

zweifuss··on LXD containers on macOS at near-native speeds
Depends. QEMU can use Apple's Hypervisor virtualization framework to run ARM64 operating systems on Apple Silicon without emulation. It seems to be possible to then use Rosetta 2 to run x64-code on those operating systems.
zweifuss··on LXD containers on macOS at near-native speeds
Not right now. Can be an order of magnitude slower compared to native. Depends a lot on the program and current task. Also, the QEMU defaults are not optimal.
zweifuss··on Twitter’s ongoing cruel treatment of software engineers
Can Twitter run on 200 devs? Probably. Maybe even 20. Can Twitter run on the 200 devs they have and thrive? Don't know, but it won't be easy. Can Twitter run without manual content management? Not long term. Can Twitter run on subscription alone? No. Will Elon Musk ruin his mystique? Already has. Are these questions related? Yes.
zweifuss··on Ask HN: Why there is so much paper use in Small business for invoicing purpose?
Google "SEPA Request-to-Pay (SRTP)".

Also have a look at the "U.S. e-Invoicing Pilot".

EDIFACT ist an old global standard from the 70ies that is still in use for invoicing. Only B2B and B2G.

zweifuss··on Ask HN: What is the new tab “news”
* https://news.ycombinator.com/news is the ranked version. It's slightly different from the server root (index), but content is the same.

* https://news.ycombinator.com/newest is sorted by submit time.

zweifuss··on Ask HN: Why there is so much paper use in Small business for invoicing purpose?
There are established digital invoicing standards. For example, in Switzerland eBill; in Germany ZUGFeRD and more recently XRechnung. These have been around for 20 years.
zweifuss··on Ask HN: What books should I read to understand nuclear power?
Not bad. But most lectures will not be helpful in a political discussion.
zweifuss··on Ask HN: What books should I read to understand nuclear power?
- Get the IAEA Isotope Browser App for your Smartphone. Learn how to use it.

- Read all history articles on https://whatisnuclear.com/reactor_history.html then follow your interests.

- Use Wikipedia to the max!

- Trust no one. Check everything!

- The IAEA has a comprehensive study program. But I wouldn't recommend it as a starting point: https://www.iaea.org/topics/infrastructure-development/e-lea...

zweifuss··on Recreating macOS’s Drift Screensaver with Rust and WASM
In a library setting they were useful to show availability.

Often Users would press the power button, when the screen was blank, even if the PC was on. Boot time was longer than two minutes and the filesystems generally didn't have journaling and were prone to corruption, when rebooted that way.

zweifuss··on How I learned about corporate firewalls
I didn't know either, so I looked it up: The three initials stand for the three most important IT protection goals, often referred to as the "pillars of data security":

Confidentiality,

Integrity,

Availability.

There are other IT protection goals, including authenticity, privacy, reliability, and (non)repudiation.
