zvr··on My Life in Ambigrammia
Thank you so much for this! It's a great resource and it's wonderful to see it resurrected.
zvr··on My Life in Ambigrammia
On the "Angels and Demons" ambigrams...

The artist made such an impression to the book author, Dan Brown, that he (Brown) decided to name the protagonist after him.

Here's John Langdon, artist: https://www.johnlangdon.net/

Having met John (I showed him the second largest Escher collection), I can confirm he's a wonderful person.

zvr··on PEP 810 – Explicit lazy imports
It's not only in the case of plugins.

If a tool has different capabilities that use different imports, why load all of them if only a subset is required?

As a simple example, a tool that can generate output in various formats (e.g., json, csv, xml, ...) should only import the appropriate modules to handle the output format after having determined which ones will be used in this invocations.

In The Old Days, it was hard links, no symlinks.
zvr··on Mini smartphones from Japan [video]
I've been using a Unihertz Jelly (2?) for years. Some of the usual apps are a little tricky in such a small screen, where the keyboard takes up a large portion of visible space, but overall it's a great solution for someone who wants a small smartphone.

The battery kept getting worse after recharging, so I eventually replaced it with a new one -- and everything was back to normal.

zvr··on Consistent hashing
You're missing that the hash space is not divided uniformly. Which means one can vary the number of slots without recomputing the hash space division -- and without reassigning all of the existing entries.
zvr··on ‘Based on a True Story’ (2016-2019)
Fargo (the movie) was 10 whole years before the interval analyzed here.
zvr··on Show HN: Software Freelancers Contract Template
The git commit hash is yet another dimension, the "version", which is different than the "variant". Like CC-BY-SA-3.0 vs CC-BY-SA-4.0.
zvr··on Show HN: Software Freelancers Contract Template
I think the idea was, if you could codify all your choice parameters, you could end up with a unique identifier for each combination.

Kind of like the six different variants of Creative Commons licenses: CC-BY, CC-BY-SA, CC-BY-NC, CC-BY-NC-SA, CC BY-ND, CC BY-NC-ND.

zvr··on Making of "Printing Types"
Amazing! As an owner of the print edition, this is a very impressive piece of work!
zvr··on Everyone's trying vectors and graphs for AI memory. We went back to SQL
I think Datalog would be even more suitable than Prolog for this use case.
zvr··on After 50 years, The Magic Circle finally inducts Penn and Teller
You are absolutely correct.

When teaching this whole routine, Dani spends much more time on the psychological background and nudges that are used, rather than the physical card manipulation techniques.

zvr··on Melvyn Bragg steps down from presenting In Our Time
He's one of the great ones!

zvr··on I miss using em dashes
vim still does it, when joining lines.
zvr··on Bear is now source-available
Open Source is not a business model.

Yikes!

Thank you for this.

zvr··on Ask HN: Best codebases to study to learn software design?
One of the best is actually the implementation of the Tcl language. It's highly readable C code, very well structured (it was initially by Ousterhout, after all).
zvr··on AI tooling must be disclosed for contributions
The example I was referring to was not in the US.

A restaurant / cafe may pay a fixed fee and get access to a specific catalog of songs (performances). The fee depends on what the catalog contains. As you can imagine, paying for the right to only play instrumental versions of songs (no singers, no lyrics) is significantly cheaper. Or, having performances of songs by unknown people.

zvr··on FFmpeg 8.0
Yes, it uses zlib and some implementation of SSL.

My earlier comment about "SSL" is that the actual library might be OpenSSL, BoringSSL, WolfSSL, GnuTLS, or any one of a number of others. So the number of uses of each one is smaller than the total number of "SSL" uses.

zvr··on FFmpeg 8.0
Curl should be up there, and "SSL" might be lower because of different implementations would split the numbers.
zvr··on FFmpeg 8.0
I am perfectly at home with regexp, but ffmpeg, magick, and jq are still on the list to master.
zvr··on AI tooling must be disclosed for contributions
I know of restaurants and bars that choose to play cover versions of well-known songs because the costs are so much less.
zvr··on Code formatting comes to uv experimentally
A better example might be: in good ol' days when we were formatting with troff(1), passing arguments to the command line invoked other programs like eqn(1) and tbl(1).
zvr··on Epson MX-80 Fonts
In a computer lab in a university in Greece in the '80s... we had a Star NL-10 connected to a Vax 11/750 running BSD Unix.

We were using nroff(1) to typeset and print documents, using the printer built-in fonts.

And then at some point we wrote the driver so that troff(1) (which was actually ditroff, for "device-independent" troff), could generate output that set the printer in high-resolution mode and essentially printed pre-rendered bitmaps of lines.

Oh, the memories!

zvr··on Forklifts require training
Apologies, but reading the title I was expecting at least a passing reference to the wonderful training video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-pJ3R7XnBU
zvr··on Debian 13 “Trixie”
Eventually, someone must take source code and build and package the software.

When it's Debian maintainers, one at least knows the rules they are operating by. For random people on the internet, it's usually more difficult to evaluate, vet them, and trust what they are doing.

Of course, I don't know you personally nor any software package that you are releasing so this is not an observation directed to you.

Wonderful project; loved the speed and responsiveness.

But a humble request: please make sure that the planned "AI integration" is completely optional, not compiled-in, or, even better, a sister project ("aidoxx"?).

Having the functionality of sending the contents of a Word document to any external service will be a red flag and block adoption of this tool in many environments.

zvr··on "Email is Easy" email address quiz
Well, of course, in a multi-user system you can send an email to "user". Typically used for system processes to email "root" back in the day, or "postmaster" or other system accounts, as well.

Bang paths host!user or even host1!host2!user were used in the past, and I think they are still supported by most MTAs. They are definitely valid syntax for email addresses. I mean, if you're talking about quotes and parentheses, ...
