zug_zug··on The FAA's Real Air Traffic Control Crisis Runs Much Deeper
> We wouldn't have to guess and allow for right-wing conjectures if FAA were just transparent on the process and if any changes have been made.

There's no world where you out-research every conspiracy theory, especially all the right-wing ones during an Trump/RFK/Musk era.

But for what it's worth the family member who failed was a minority, even though my father was an ATC, so all else being equal you'd expect them to have a relatively good set of chances (just due to genes, if that's a thing).

zug_zug··on The FAA's Real Air Traffic Control Crisis Runs Much Deeper
No, they haven’t lowered the standard to graduate.
zug_zug··on The FAA's Real Air Traffic Control Crisis Runs Much Deeper
So how it works is there's a selection process to go to ATC school/training.

Just getting into training doesn't mean you get to be a controller, you get tested a lot and hard with very representative work (a close relative failed this actually), and only get to be an ATC if you pass well enough.

I think maybe you misread the article, because it explicitly says "Note that leaving behind qualified applicants from Collegiate Training isn’t why we don’t have more controllers"

I suppose it’s at least nice that it’s so unsophisticated about its bias, for now at least.
zug_zug··on So you wanna write Kubernetes controllers?
Asgs can do both of those things, it’s a 5% use-case so it takes a little more work but not much
zug_zug··on So you wanna write Kubernetes controllers?
I’ve never seen a single company use kubernetes or terraform to move vendors; the feasibility of that was massively over represented
zug_zug··on So you wanna write Kubernetes controllers?
I think you’re comically misunderstanding what 95% of companies actually are doing with kubernetes

> There's not really any other (well supported) alternative if you want that

You don't think AWS autoscale groups give you both of those things?

zug_zug··on So you wanna write Kubernetes controllers?
Not really.
zug_zug··on So you wanna write Kubernetes controllers?
I think you're sort of hand-waving here.

I think the concrete question is -- do you need to learn more or fewer abstractions to use kubernetes versus say AWS?

And it looks like kubernetes is more abstractions in exchange for more customization. I can understand why somebody would roll their eyes at a system that has as much abstraction as kuberenetes does if their use-case is very concrete - they are scaling a web app based on traffic.

zug_zug··on So you wanna write Kubernetes controllers?
I think the point is that there are abstractions that require you to know almost nothing (e.g. that my laptop has a SSD with blocks that are constantly dying is abstracted to a filesystem that looks like a basic tree structure).

Then there are abstractions that may actually increase cognitive load "What if instead of thinking about chairs, we philosophically think about ALL standing furniture types, stools, tables, etc. They may have 4 legs, 3, 6? What about a car seats too?"

AFAICT writing a kubernetes controller is probably overkill challenge-yourself level exercise (e.g. a quine in BF) because odds are that any resource you've ever needed to manage somebody else has built an automated way to do it first.

Would love to hear other perspectives though if anybody has great examples of when you really couldn't succeed without writing your own kubernetes controller.

zug_zug··on When AI promises speed but delivers debugging hell
I'm not sure what your point is here...

Where the author went wrong in this post is that he tried to interpret an error ("I was asking claude to solve the wrong problem"), was wrong, and then wasted a lot of his own time.

I really think it's best practice when describing a problem to anybody that you start with what you observe and then if you want to hint your suspicions you call those out afterward as such. If you're very confident the LLM is going down a wrong path, you can ask it things like "How would I test the theory that environment variables aren't set in my docker container?"

zug_zug··on When AI promises speed but delivers debugging hell
This roughly mirrors my experience so far. Mind you I'm an extremely qualified engineer who has worked at FAANG.

Except I'd add that as one gets experience working with the AI I can only assume they'd get much better at making it go smoothly. For example, I wouldn't manually rewrite localhost, I'd tell the AI "Why is localhost everywhere? Will this worker if I deploy to a droplet?" and it will fix it for you.

Also I just paste error-messages directly into the AI and it usually knows how to fix them.

Sometimes it's net positive, sometimes it's net-negative due to creating a mess that's really hard to get out of or debug. But I imagine it's only a matter of time until the scopes in which it's cost-effective go up.

I don't like that AI is a threat of huge monopolistic and job-reducing potential, but I don't think downplaying it is a long-term strategy to combat that.

zug_zug··on Team Trump Says Mark Zuckerberg Has 'More Ass-Kissing' to Do
> At the dawn of a second Donald Trump era, Mark Zuckerberg has been busy sucking up to a president who last year threatened him with life in prison.

I'm guessing most of the upvotes are schadenfreude and hoping that the lesson here is that is that he'll be no less pushed-around in the Trump term than he ever was in the Biden term?

The sad thing is, I feel like Meta has used up so much trust that I wouldn't even entirely dismiss the possibility that this was a deliberate thing to show a reduction in certain metrics on certain topics to curry favor.

Betting odds are this is just an embarrassing bug. But maybe there's a lesson here about the value of earning a reputation of trustworthiness.

Good thought. The only change I'd make, to make your neutrality explicit, is to say

zug_zug··on TikTok users posting cat videos do not threaten UK national security, minister
That's a really weak argument. Let's clarify:

1. An anti-free-speech government that arrests people for discussing certain topics that controls a company that seems not to show certain topics much.

2. The company doesn't make any claim it's not filtering out anti-china topics.

3. We find strong evidence that platforms don't match.

4. You want to throw out all evidence and blindly presume complete innocence because you think 1 of 10 topics on instagram isn't easy to explain?

Feels hard to believe you could come to that conclusion in good faith.

zug_zug··on TikTok users posting cat videos do not threaten UK national security, minister
No, I'm saying that if they aren't even willing to assert innocence of manipulating what trends then we certainly shouldn't presume innocence.

I'd like for them to testify under oath about how they alter what is trending, then I'd like for us to independently verify those those results to the best of our ability.

zug_zug··on TikTok users posting cat videos do not threaten UK national security, minister
This feels pretty convincing to me.

It also feels to me like we shouldn't have to reverse-engineer platforms to deduce whether they are pushing an agenda... If they aren't doing any interfering then they should simply put out an official statement clarifying that.

zug_zug··on TikTok users posting cat videos do not threaten UK national security, minister
My question was whether they are allowed to go viral.

Sounds like there's evidence in another thread that they are actively manipulating what goes viral on key current political topics... which seems pretty damning.

zug_zug··on TikTok users posting cat videos do not threaten UK national security, minister
Well, I looked up Taiwan protest and the 4 I looked at were all allegedly Taiwanese protesting against their own independence.... (For context only 10% of Taiwanese support unification with China per a google search)

Would love somebody who has an account (and can translate) to do a sanity check here.

zug_zug··on TikTok users posting cat videos do not threaten UK national security, minister
Sure, the ones posting cat videos don't. But what are the odds that TikTok would ever let a Taiwan Protest go viral?

I wonder if it even lets use use the word Taiwan...

Maybe he's trying to get cred with trump so that he can try to have influence over the tik-tok ban (a huge competitor).

zug_zug··on Kubernetes Comic
I understand your point -- is my complaint about kubernetes itself or just the way that people at my job set it up?

But in practice perhaps my feeling is that if a tool/ecosystem has too many viable/competing ways to do things and/or it makes adding complexity too easy, the it does encourage devs to get way out their depth. That's less of a problem if it's some tiny service only they have to deal with, but a threat to the whole company if they're using a multimillion dollar company's uptime as their little playground.

That may be less of a criticism of kubernetes itself and more of the ecosystem/trend, but I still think it's relevant. I'd compare it to this - I have often found frontend intolerable not because the tools are bad, but because the rate-of-change of the "in" tools is so excessive.

zug_zug··on Kubernetes Comic
I feel like I was lied to about what kubernetes is and comics like this sorta partake in it.

The sales pitch is basically akin to "mongo is webscale" but "kubernetes is scaling/portability/reproducability."

Maybe my workplace just did it wrong, but the way they've set up kubernetes is exponentially more work than just scaling up (akin to an AWS autoscaling group). It has its own networking system, competing languages for manifests, competing auth mechanisms, multiple ingress/routing mechanisms, different CI/CD tools, helm/kustomize, multiple different competing scaling mechanisms that can sometimes be used together. And don't get me started on CRDS and such.

In some ways it's closer to build your own AWS than it is just autoscaling. Which sort of doesn't make as much sense to me if your company is full of 10-year experts on AWS and you're suddenly reinventing the wheel on all of this.

Which isn't to say it's strictly bad, but when I see what my work team has built it's very clear that local testing is well out of the realm of possibility and their work has already lead to multiple outages. And most of the administration isn't "clickops" but IMO it's even worse -- people typing admin commands at their console with no review -- type-ops.

It wasn't the UI that made click-ops bad, it was the fact that it was a bunch of manual admins changes not using PRs and automation.

zug_zug··on Supreme Court upholds TikTok ban, but Trump might offer lifeline
> But its perfectly fine for a US company to do it?

China blocks facebook/twitter/instagram/pinterest/gmail/wikipedia/twitch and even US newspapers.

So clearly they don't think it's okay for a US-company to do it (and are at least an order magnitude stricter about it)...
