Anyways, want to clarify a couple things:
- All of the information presented is accurate. And the questions are fair.
- I am not defending FB or other tech companies broadly. I'm pro data locality.
- China is an authoritarian mass surveillance state that forcibly squashes detractors and limits individual freedoms. The US has made many mistakes, but it still doesn't come comparably close to this.
- Please for the love of God don't compare me to Dan Price. Please? lmao.
Concerns come after some form of adverse reaction. I personally only have them in for 2-3 hours per day, and don't think of the bluetooth much.
We won't have long term data for years, and that's just the reality. Even with long-term data, trying to hone in specific health problems to Airpods or similar devices will be incredibly difficult.
That's a lofty claim and I have heard CAES storage at economic scales is still unsolved, else we'd see a rocketship company in the space. If you do know of a stealthy rocketship here, who is it?
It also allows people to build their credit without a credit card.
But yes: people shouldn't be using it to buy things they can't afford.
$400 a month for groceries? In SF?
A single meal at an "affordable" restaurant is often $30 after tip.
I think my main problem w/ the tax proposals is that they are big, bold changes.
If anyone wants to increases taxes even 1%, I want there to be a big fight about it. Serious demands in to budget efficiency and transparency. If it passes, I want to know there is scrutiny over the taking of my dollars.
Passing a 10% increase swiftly and suddenly is like a punch to the gut, and we all know the tax code and laws around equity are totally moronic. "We only tax if you make over $x!" doesn't account for the fact that many folks get all of their many years of equity... at once, in one tax year. Why is that counted as income for 1 year, and then boom, up to 65% tax?
Overall, taxes over 50% feel unethical too -- imagine if a mob boss goes to a retail store and demands half the profits. Why does anyone -- mob or Government -- deserve more than half of what you make? To hit 55% tax rate in California after this, you only need to make like $250k total. It's a good amount, sure, but if you compare cost of living... it's still hard to live on. You can still barely afford a crappy house. So you get this situation where "life is hard" AND the government is taking home more of your money than you do.
How are they avoiding all of the change?
I know the Repl.it team, including Amjad, and they're all some very upstanding people. I'm biased myself.
Often there are localized judgement errors, and treating people via threat of the law is both a mistake (IMO) and also an unfortunately reality for running a company. It's hard to make a determination of what we'd all do if not in the shoes where a former employee is potentially stealing your code/IP.
This is one side of the story, we don't have much evidence either direction, and it's not clear there was any "cheating" involved in anyone's past.
HN should do better.
Better to be direct. I think it's very possible the CEO did not fully internalize what you were implying by stating they're using your CDN, etc, and instead it just seemed like a sales email.
With an app store and server infrastructure with public ports, I could also see API/automation browsing built-in.
And hasn't nearly every strategy in the history of computing that started with gaming succeeded wildly?
This isn't hard. The majority of people arrested had Parler accounts -- it's everywhere.
Let's have the free speech discussions debated through representatives. I can agree that violence should be removed by platforms immediately, and that "Stop the Steal" did promote just that.
In many areas the Airbnbs were not illegal, and sometimes "regulatory capture" should be fought as unjust.
Of course, in other areas, you're totally right that sometimes the local regulations should win, the company fined, etc. All depends on what the local community wants, imo.
I'm reading this right, correct? I see the cash positions below are a bit different, but that's likely from... the loans?
2018 looked so hopeful. They only lose $20m total! 2019 should have been a profitable year, IMO, but they went with the aggressive strategy.
I think it could work in virtual reality with Facebooks' emotive expressions, face tracking, etc. But if I'm in the middle of a workday, moving a little 2d character around doesn't feel very useful. But perhaps I'm wrong!
If this type of idea does actually get strong PM fit, the market size could be huge. So for VCs it seems like an interesting bet to make, even if the odds of success are low.
More code should be done. More developers just need to know how to quit the project when the time is right.
This is weird to say, but this is strong leadership.
I am curious when crypto will get there. Maybe 10 years or so?
"You had years to plan for us removing 95% of your business!" is quite the argument.
Why do you think they couldn't operate?
That being said, what online education institution hasn't had a huge amount of blowback, either due to poor instruction or lying about results?
Not saying two wrongs make a right. Just saying it's all quite predatory and built on promises of tomorrow, most of which will go unfulfilled.
Just a good human all around, wanting to build things for fun and help people because that's what people with power do.
A true icon who encompasses many of the things that make America great, and serves as a compass for us all to be a little better. Let's get wozzy.
