I share your experiences at large firm and startups . What I feel is that tech leads, Architects or Sr. Engineers have lot of stress to deal with when they have bad managers which is ultimately bad for the team , company and individual development.

I think my question should have been phrased a bit differently as some level of mgmt especially at Director or Sr. Manager level should be sufficient to take care of hiring/firing, budgeting etc. Also with better tooling , conflicts can also be minimized as they are caused by egoistic views which are not based on data (think pros/cons of a solution etc).

So in short first level managers and Project manager roles can be minimized and/or their roles adjusted as shared resources across teams, not as product owners and team managers which is a mostly redundant role.

cool, thanks for sharing your experience. Definitely a unified tool that would map Product Roadmap -> Deliverables (Implementation Tasks) -> QA verifications in a trusted manner could reduce dependency on dev mgrs, PMs and inturn give more ownership to Sr. Engineers..

Wonderful summary of a great manager (hopefully you are not a manager:) .. In practice, what % of managers would fit the bill as you described (esp. in larger firms) ?

Indeed, there needs to be folks (director and Sr.Mgrs) who look at big picture but my focus is more on the low/middle managers or even PMs. Regarding low level tasks the Sr. engineers can self create these tasks i believe for the goals they need to be targeting.

And yes, you are right in that the big companies are operating in the old fashion way and i was thinking of a implementing a tool that would disrupt that in some ways..:)

This is not necessarily a bad thing unless it's some kind of issue that requires a doctor's attention.

Most people are in the rat race of this materialistic life and do not even get time to think, let alone find meaning and purpose of their life which is not necessarily worldly as proven by your lottery comment.

My advice - see if connecting with God and reflecting on his creations helps you find the right path and purpose.

I am fine with people having no degree and learning computer programming , but do not understand why people get masters in mechanical or electrical engineering and then enter programming web apps..if its all about money why do they waste the mechanical/civil engineering seat at the university ?

If argument is that they need to pay loans, then computer degrees should also be allowed to learn on the job and do mechanical/civil stuff ?

Ok don't get me wrong, agile dev has its benefits but usually its not used properly especially where I have worked in past. Project managers just care about completing features in days , when in fact the analysis and design of such features would itself require days or even weeks.

Agile dev has also contributed to complex software.

I wonder why people get a masters in mechanical engineering or other field and code webapps or services just because they get a good job offer ? A software / compute engineer would never be able to get a mechanical or civil engineering job without appropriate degrees or certs in the field.

Its 21st century, and we still need nukes and torture to feel secure..what a shame.

what about internet? There is a ton of stuff out there on the internet that is bad for kids, so shouldn't that be controlled too ?

Sure , would it not be more of an extension (although agreeably an extreme one) of computers, vending machines, self serve checkouts, self driving cars etc ?

I have implemented this app to get useful information summary from your search results instead of mining the search results on mobile. Moreover, the app also highlights the most liked result (on the social web).

I have implemented this with the aim of providing a "search assistant" type feature which would highlight the (socially) "most liked" links as well as a summarized info (which will get very useful over time) as more and more users use it.

The mobile users would no more be required to dig out the information through the search results or inadvertently click the ads that fill the mobile screen.

I as a muslim too respect jews and israelis as a hardworking , intelligent community but that does not mean we need to agree with everything they do as righteous .

In this world of open source software and super fast servers , hiring is over hyped especially for apps & enterprise solutions. The best enterprise/web app coder is not necessarily the best analytical thinker or apolitical individual. Indeed, there are some domains where you will need specialists.

Any one who is hard worker (can learn etc) and has open mind to discussing design pros and cons is a good hire for 80% of software.
