zoltar··on Ford's answer to EV supply chain hell: Cheaper batteries
I wish there was more enthusiasm around this tech. The Hyundai N Vision 74 is the first concept car I've wanted to test drive in a long while.
zoltar··on Cold-brewing of coffee by picosecond-pulsed laser extraction
James Hoffmann tried it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2meeYcxXoVs
zoltar··on Fly.io: The reclaimer of Heroku's magic
It's like what Hedberg said about rice: k8s is great if you're really hungry and what to host two thousand of something.
zoltar··on The Museum of Endangered Sounds
Anyone else miss the sound from old stepper motor hard drives? Like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xy3uWRuQXl0#t=4m30s

I've been tempted to write something the monitors kernel io stats and softly beeps at me, but maybe those days should just stay behind us...

zoltar··on Justice Stevens reads the fine print
You should probably update your threat model.
zoltar··on Fuchsia Workstation
...and no comments in here with either pink or Taligent?
zoltar··on Music theory for nerds (2016)
I really like 12tone's breakdown of pop songs. Here's an example with The Immigrant Song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwsfR5sJPbM
zoltar··on I tried 30 mustards this summer
Great article. For additional mustard content, I've enjoyed the reviews on the Mustard Museum's Youtube channel.
zoltar··on Confessions of a Michelin Star Inspector
I'm not much of a foodie, but I do like eating stuff.

I've found that most starred restaurants I've been to are more like participating in some performance art rather than an effort just to not be hungry. Three stars is a blockbuster movie. One star is a good short story or a clever photograph.

It's like sitting down and asking Thomas Keller or April Bloomfield to tell you what's up using just their vision and talent and the contents of their pantry.

I also really appreciate nerds. People who just go all out on something and dive deep or wide or both. Out of curiosity or passion or just good old plain obsession.

While there are whole genres of art I don't get, I find food is a pretty approachable for me.

As an aside, your comment reminded me of a scene from Star Trek. First minute or so of this clip:

zoltar··on Forest Service officials close all California national forests
Anyone else enjoy the dissonance in this comment between the consequentialism reference and refusal to relocate?
zoltar··on Sortable Collision-Free UUIDs
laptop% date -d 'Sep 13 2020 12:26:40Z' +'%s' 1600000000
zoltar··on RetroForth 2021.1
I think this tech talk on Factor offers a pretty good tour of the language.

zoltar··on Ox is a fast text editor, written in Rust, that runs in your terminal
Incorrect. The base64 command wraps at 76 columns by default.
zoltar··on FreeYourMusic lets users migrate their playlists off Spotify
I think something like this still works with a client id, secret, and a playlist:

  TOKEN=$(curl --basic --user $ID:$SECRET -X POST -d grant_type=client_credentials https://accounts.spotify.com/api/token | jq -r .access_token)
  curl -H "Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN" https://api.spotify.com/v1/playlists/$PLAYLIST/tracks | tee playlist-$PLAYLIST.json | jq -rc '.items[].track | "\(.artists[0].name) -- \(.name)"' | sort
zoltar··on Look ma, no mouse: Vimium
For the second time this week on here, I feel compelled to recommend https://krabby.netlify.app/

Ever want to copy all the links in a column of a table to the clipboard? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJXCnRBkHDY

zoltar··on Tridactyl: A Vim-like interface for Firefox
I looked at a few things including tridactyl when web extensions took out vimperator. After seeing the demos, I settled on giving https://krabby.netlify.app/ a try.

Copying all the links from a table in a go without doing some console fiddling is kinda nice when you need it.

zoltar··on 21 years after the request OpenPGP support gets added to Thunderbird
The European Union (EU) consists of 27 member states.

zoltar··on The database I wish I had
It's slightly more likely that modern SQL is the byproduct of several query language specifications accelerated to ludicrous speeds and set to collide with each other. Out one end of the apparatus, SQL-86 emerged.

A little known fact about this experiment: the residue splattered along the interior of the apparatus was recovered and named LDAP.

zoltar··on Facebook launches its TikTok rival, Instagram Reels
Feels like it's already the new AOL.
zoltar··on A philosophical difference between Haskell and Lisp (2015)
Even though it's more "Pythonic", I tend to avoid your Python version. I think my favorite way to write that would be:

> import whatever > filter(_ not in y, foo)

For me it's more readable. To each their own, of course.

zoltar··on Functional Programming for Array-Based Parallelism
Reminds me of Guy Steele tackling this trivial problem on stage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftcIcn8AmSY
zoltar··on Tesla Cybertruck
I'm 100% with you on this. That c-pillar makes it a non-starter for me.
zoltar··on My company sold for $100M and I got zilch – how can that be?
Because they can? If you don't like the terms, it's up to you to walk away.
zoltar··on Antenna Theory (2016)
Indeed. The evolved antenna page has an example. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evolved_antenna (previously here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18449434).
zoltar··on Google’s new voice recognition system works instantly and offline (Pixel only)
While not a demo of Dragon's NaturallySpeaking, I think of this video when someone mentions 90/00's-level consumer dictation software. For me, the video absolutely captured what it felt like to use those products.

zoltar··on Let over Lambda – Common Lisp Book (2008)
Good list. Practical Common Lisp deserves that spot at the top. It's very approachable and provides examples of all those features you keep hearing good things about. I remember running through the spam filter chapter and finding an email that SpamAssassin misclassified about four years prior.

I think my favorite Forth introduction comes at it from the other direction, though: https://github.com/nornagon/jonesforth/blob/master/jonesfort...

zoltar··on A Road to Common Lisp
A while back, I remember running samba with the configuration option "panic action = /usr/bin/X11/xterm -display :0 -e gdb ...". On a segfault, you'd get a happy little xterm ready to go. Never managed to recover an operation from that window, though.

I have caught a condition in StumpWM (a window manager written in Common Lisp) and done something useful with it. A completely different beast. Practical Common Lisp has a solid example that may be a bit enlightening (http://www.gigamonkeys.com/book/beyond-exception-handling-co...).

zoltar··on Paradise Lost: How Tourists Are Destroying the Places They Love
Instagram has 700MM daily actives. The world doesn't have fifty billion people. Who's projecting exactly?
