zkomp··on VirtualBox E1000 Guest-to-Host Escape
It's even better when he slips and say: "Don't anthropomorphize Larry Ellison"
zkomp··on The Rust borrow checker from a different perspective
Just to be clear, rust is not object oriented. You do not use inheritance nor do you have objects.

There was a recent post comparing rust to haskell https://www.fpcomplete.com/blog/2018/10/is-rust-functional. And tldr is yes it lends itself to a functional style...

zkomp··on Cancer-Linked Chemicals Manufactured by 3M Are Turning Up in Drinking Water
Did you forget the sarcasm tag, or do you really equate free markets with the made up "freedom" of polluting the environment and give cancer to everyone who in turn will have to pay for health care or just die? That is not what free markets means...
zkomp··on Evidence that addictive behaviors have links with ancient retroviral infection
Not really the entire history of human thought; the actual philosophers who thought differently were harshly persecuted, their books burned, or if they saw it coming did not even dare to publish their true thoughts...
zkomp··on Gut directly connected to brain, by a newly discovered neuron circuit
I've read about "the brain in the gut" on and off for about 10 years.

As for "chakras", that is just borrowed eastern holistic philosophies... Chakras are chakras since those areas has large amount of neurons dedicated to them... (genitals, stomach, heart, brain)...

zkomp··on More Americans report near-constant cannabis use
I think when it comes to marijuana there is a real difference between using it every day and being truly addicted.

I think the difference comes down to if you use it as medicine and thus medicate each and every day or if you use it as a drug and just want to get high and party every day.

In any way - there is no use of punishing addicts, and even less use in preventing people from medicating - legalize!

zkomp··on More Americans report near-constant cannabis use
Why does using somehting everyday make you automatically an addict. Are really people who are prescribed and use anti-depressant addicts. I think its more similar than not.

Using alcohol everyday on the other hand, that can make you addicted in ways pot never can...

zkomp··on How NoSQL forced the evolution of a scalable relational database
Yes hstore is limited but since you can represent numbers and even hstore itself as text, all you really have to do is cast to and from text and then you have a nested structure with almost anything in it...

jsonb is much better obviously but hstore was really nice and kind of under appreciated.

zkomp··on Friedrich Nietzsche: The truth is terrible
Nice to see a good reading of Nietzsche, which is super hard given his style and your own bias.

I agree with this, and it really puts the focus on why it is rewarding reading Nietzsche today.

The only thing I miss is the implicit and hidden Spinozism in Nietzsche. Why it matters? - Spinoza can really help with the political aspect. Goal of true democracy and maximum freedom.

Such a reading will see The will to Power as the Spinozian conatus/desire. As for Power, not opressive power of rulers, but the power to live and act. The affirmation as Spinozian affirmation of joy (ie affirmate what makes you grow in such power)

zkomp··on Why We Should Say Yes to Drugs
I do not believe you at all.

This kind of puritanism and any abstaining (from coffee, tobacco, alcohol, sex, drugs, entertainment, etc) should be a personal life choice. Not mandated by law.

Drugs have been since since forever, and prohibition never really worked. It even has not so hidden racist logic baked into it, targeting minorities, civil asset forfeiture, covert wars by letter soup agencies. It must end.

zkomp··on You don't need ML/AI, you need SQL
What? not having to choose either or, actually using good tools for the job, solving the problem instead of mindlessly following the hype? /s
zkomp··on In MySQL, don’t use “utf8”, use “utf8mb4” (2016)
What is so stupid with avoiding the living hell of maintaning crap: silent data truncation, weird inconcistencies or this very issue.

If you need a database, why would you ever pick the stupid one..,

zkomp··on AI at Google: our principles
They have plenty of terrorists and frequent attack, but also no free press so you do not get to know much about it...
zkomp··on Linus Torvalds on aliasing
I just don't see it. He is frustrated with the standard being wrong, no personal insult or anything.
zkomp··on Apple rejects Valve’s Steam Link game streaming app over ‘business conflicts’
Yes yes and yes.

So now it is totally possible, you just must avoid iPads (face palm)

Essentialy Apple want force me buy some android tablet, smart move...

zkomp··on Apple rejects Valve’s Steam Link game streaming app over ‘business conflicts’
What? I really looked forward to this.

Gaming in the apple eco system is horrible already but not even be allowed to stream?

Extremely stupid, Outright hostile

"Business conflict"? Now Apple suddenly becomes a real obstruction in my life and ultimately an enemy. This is switch to android level of bad.

zkomp··on XKCD on Docker
Well the Title is "Containers". Punchline is about writing software or glue together things you dont understand.

The mention of that hyped and also hilariously buggy product seems relevant. See https://thehftguy.com/2016/11/01/docker-in-production-an-his... for a few years old example of this "gluing together things without understanding"

zkomp··on C Is Not a Low-Level Language
Maybe true but I think the Java example is not that good. Java is still not that different from C. Java is more like a decendant to C and C++ - and to be honest both languages force you to pay attention to lots of irrelevant "low-level" detail, fictionally low-level since its not actually the machine but language itself (that is stuck in the PDP11 mental mode...)

Compared to something different like Erlang, Haskell, Lisp

zkomp··on Dark side of ergonomics in Rust
Hmm yeah... I think I completely agree with this, the whole point of rust (for me) is safety and less surprises - the surprises tend to be misguided ergonomics.

But is this a real danger now? Is the ergonomics initiative trying to make rust into JavaScript or Ruby? That would be unfortunate, languages should be different and the point of rust is sacrificing some ergonomic for safety and in the end more power...

zkomp··on The correspondence of René Descartes and Princess Elisabeth of Bohemia
Always felt Descartes kind of cheated himself with his very categorical denounciation of the body and the animals as mere thoughtless automatons.

Leibniz and Spinoza (the other 2 of the 3 great 16th century rationalists) have more nuanced views, esp Spinoza who in his Ethica said something like: Descartes was a very bright man who non the less fooled himself with the idea of the pineal gland as seat of the soul. Etc

zkomp··on Omaha man ‘liked’ a tweet, then lost his job
It is not black and white though, I'm in sweden. Companies will of course hire out of necessity, but strive as much as possible to not do it - outsource, consultants, temp workers, move abroad etc etc
zkomp··on YouTube and Reddit roll out new restrictions including channel and sub bans
That is too simple. The conclusion is the laws only work as long it is percieved better to follow than not, either by force, violence or social coercion or their actual concequences.

Drug laws for example does not really work, since some people self medicate no matter if there is a death sentence. Others don't care since they probably wont get caught.

While other laws kind of does work, people can rationally choose to follow them because the concequences of doing so are the "best" available option.

zkomp··on Rust's 2018 roadmap
In this minefield, I really miss the irony tag here.

I do, really do, belive this should just boil down to: - don't be a jerk - don't discriminate

zkomp··on Crazy new Swedish bill makes sharing music and TV as bad a “crime” as manslaughter
Sure its officially low, even though we just measured a new all time high in corruption. most of it will be hidden and institutionalized.

Imho these severe penalties on victimless crimes, based on foreign lobbying shows ... something, but it is not the will of the people, not independence, not justice, not really functional democracy.

zkomp··on Crazy new Swedish bill makes sharing music and TV as bad a “crime” as manslaughter
An incompetent government and corrupt politicians can ruin anything. Including their own immigration policies by being dysfunctional and in the end boosting the anti-immigration forces on the other end of the political spectrum.

Interesting times.

zkomp··on Why I Don't Like Golang (2016)
Well yes! You might not have that option to not use it (too late).

Just like this guy you (or your colleges) might actually have been fooled by curiosity and hype to write some code and put it in production, and when you realize how bad it actually is (this was only a personal top 10). At least you should try to fight back against the hype and try to warn people.

Still think the general sentiment is quite go positive overall, go definitely needs more critique.

zkomp··on Go 1.10 Release Notes
Everything C can do but better? Sure you are not confusing Go with Rust?

Go does have a GC, not manual memory management

Go can't interact performantly with other languages.

Go is like Java (not C). Its kind of nice but deliberatley sabotaged by (Big Company).

zkomp··on Spectre Mitigations in Microsoft's C/C++ Compiler
The actual conclusion is fairly clear also "Developers and users cannot rely on Microsoft's current compiler mitigation to protect against the conditional branch variant of Spectre."

"Speculation barriers are only an effective defense if they are applied to all vulnerable code patterns in a process" Which they are not, since that would be a huge performance hit.

zkomp··on Slack: Other browsers require significant effort so we're focused on Chrome
This exactly!

The error message say "Please switch to chrome"

It is clumsy. They probably ment to say: use Chrome for voice support.

Anyway: if it is entitlement to choose your own browser? Then I say: "switch to Internet Explorer 6"...

zkomp··on Standard SQL features where PostgreSQL beats its competitors
I know... The main reason is it is hard to avoid downtime when upgrading older postgres versions (given a large and bussy enough server)

The situation is getting so much better with logical decoding in recent version.

When the upgrade day finally come it will be like christmas with Lateral, Filter, JsonB, Percentile_Disc/Cont, and "upserts"
