zkoch··on Sequoia backs Zed
I love working in Zed. It really is a delight to use, and I think the Agentic coding integration is really well done. I'm excited to see them investing in this space more.

I understand people's concerns about VC funding, but I think building quality products takes capital. The funding is still relatively small, especially when you compare it to players like Cursor, etc. And I think Zed is a much, much better product!

Zed being OSS is a gift to the community, and I suspect DeltaDB will be as well. And as others have said, Nathan (CEO) is a delightful human.

Congrats, Zed!

zkoch··on Fine-tuning LLMs is a waste of time
I think it is a very common misconception (by consumers or businesses trying to use LLMs) that fine tuning can be used to inject new knowledge. I'm not sure many of the fine-tuning platforms do much to disavow people of this notion.
zkoch··on Turbopuffer: Fast search on object storage
Nah, we're pretty happy with the new trajectory. :)
zkoch··on Show HN: An open source framework for voice assistants
We're (fixie.ai) working on on our SLM (speech language model). We'll release something soon to play with :)
zkoch··on Thefastest.ai
This is a great idea. We'll add it.
zkoch··on Show HN: Real-time AI voice chat with Santa
Thanks for trying it out! That's good feedback on the voice. It's actually a voice clone of a real voice actor, but I agree there are moments where it still feels not quiittee there.
zkoch··on Ai.jsx – The AI Application Framework for JavaScript
Yeah it's a great question. We're still exploring how far we can take this. I think we'll be able to get pretty basic examples working in 3.5 (like the Recipe example), but more complicated, flexible UIs will need GPT-4 for now (or some other finetuned model that specializes in this).
zkoch··on A new way to build with Large Language Models
Yeah, great feedback. We'll have a bunch more examples that vary in complexity coming out in the next couple of weeks.
zkoch··on A new way to build with Large Language Models
Short answer: yes! We think this is actually a super compelling use case, and there are a few different ways to accomplish it. We already support auth mechanisms like Oauth, and there is also agent storage built in.
zkoch··on A new way to build with Large Language Models
You can use both Langchain and GPT Index with Fixie Agents. We're fans of what they've built, and they can be great tools.
zkoch··on Apple Pay on the Web
As a quick correction, the current Web Payments API (PaymentRequest) that is making its way through the W3C process is at https://w3c.github.io/browser-payment-api/. It's not the one from web-payments.org.

What Apple has announced so far is actually quite similar to PaymentRequest. Apple is a part of the Working Group, so this isn't a huge surprise. I am hopeful that the two implementations will converge rather quickly over the next few months. Apple emailed the public working group list expressing this hope as well [1].

For full disclosure, I am an editor on the PaymentRequest spec, and I work on Chrome.

zkoch··on Uber sued for wrongful death of 6-year-old
What was interesting to me, though, was this bit: "Applying the same law which holds taxi companies responsible for the injuries caused by their drivers, whether or not they have a passenger at the time of collision, Christopher Dolan, the Liu family attorney, states that the change in technology doesn't change the legal liability for Uber."

If that's the case, and the law states that the taxi company is liable irrespective of whether someone is in the car, why shouldn't Uber be held to the same standard?

zkoch··on The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius
Another great translation of these is by two brothers, David and C. Scott Hicks. It's called The Emperor's Handbook[1], and is an attempt to translate them in a way that is less literal and more "in the spirit" of what Aurelius was trying to convey. I definitely suggest it.

zkoch··on Try R — A new online course, for free
I really like this, but one big complaint is that the auto-scroll after completing a little task isn't correct. So each time after I "pass" a particular section, I have to manually scroll down with my trackpad.
zkoch··on Permission to Suck
There are many goals to meditation. Sometimes it starts with focusing on your breath. Sometimes it's in the form of chanting. Depends on the school of thought, the individual, the goal (if you have one). It's not valid to say "No!" as though what he's proposing is wrong.
zkoch··on Ask HN: Modern Resume Style/Formatting
This was done in InDesign. You could do it in Word, but it's going to be more difficult. If you're on a Mac I would recommend Pages. I'm not as familiar with Windows, so couldn't really suggest any software there.
zkoch··on Ask HN: Modern Resume Style/Formatting
I usually try to make mine look a little more "modern." I usually follow a few simple rules:

1.) Two or three colors color scheme 2.) Simple vertical alignment 3.) 2 fonts: 1 for headings and one for body text 4.) One or two simple graphics 5.) Don't let it resemble a MS Office template

Here's a slightly dated resume of mine: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/58767/zkoch-resume.pdf

zkoch··on Chinese government dropping phone calls if forbidden words are said
I live in China, so I did a quick test with my coworkers. 4 people. Two phone calls each. Each conversation we dropped the word 'protest' in both English and Chinese. No magical dropped calls for us.
zkoch··on Ask HN: Is it still worth the effort to learn a (human) language?
I think so. I've done a lot of travelling abroad, and as an American who only speaks English, I was always a little bit ashamed that I could only manage one language. The shame was particularly great in poorer areas of Western Africa and India where people that didn't have half the education I did could speak four to five languages.

In fact, almost a year ago I left my job as a developer in San Francisco to accept a position in China solely for the purpose of becoming fluent in Chinese. I had taken classes in college, but those will of course never get you past the point of asking where the restroom is. I'm about 11 months into my venture, and my Chinese skills have improved by leaps and bounds (to such a point that I actually just did a full phone interview in Chinese). I took a huge pay cut to come here, but I think it's been worth it.

I can tell you that China is a very different country when you understand the language, and I'm sure this applies to every country in the world. So yes, I think it's definitely worth the effort to learn another language.

zkoch··on Brand new homepage for Taskforce... what do you think?
'Jobs' link also 404s.

My other thought is that it's very monochromatic. To such an extent that nothing quite draws your eye. In fact, I think the first thing I looked at was the 'Add to Gmail' button because it provided some contrast.

Why is the smallest text on the page the text that describes the features you offer?

I think on the whole you need to do a better job of telling the potential customer how you go about solving their problem. I get that it has something to do with tasks, but, for example, it's not clear what it means to "communicate through tasks, not lengthy emails." Does that mean it only works when other people are also using Taskforce?

zkoch··on Introducing the American Traveler Dignity Act
People aren't in uproar simply over 'airport security screenings.' They are in uproar over certain practices that they believe greatly infringe upon their rights. The majority of individuals, myself included, feel that we shouldn't have to make a choice between being touched inappropriately by a stranger or allowing a stranger in a back room somewhere to look at our genitalia to travel by plane.

You're probably correct that there should be greater public outcry over civilian casualties in war, but that doesn't mean we can't rally against privacy-invading things like full body scanners.

zkoch··on Ask HN: Who's looking for a co-founder?
I'm in Chengdu. Not exactly close to Nanchang, but closer than the Bay Area. Any more details on what the project is?
zkoch··on Ask HN: Hosting in China
Do you speak Chinese? I'm an American working in China, and I can point you to a number of sites that offer hosting here, though the sites are almost exclusively in Chinese. Feel free to shoot me an email: zachkoch@gmail.com.
