zja··on Meta Uses A.I. Data Centers to Avoid Billions in Federal Taxes
> Why precisely is it that we feel like we do not?

Because we don’t, our representatives work for companies like Meta, not ordinary people.

zja··on Shooting down ideas is not a skill
Isn’t proving a market exists, building a proof of concept, etc, all examples of exploring an idea? Those seem like perfectly reasonable expectations.
zja··on GitHub's Historic Uptime
PR merging broken right now https://www.githubstatus.com/incidents/ml7wplmxbt5l
zja··on US- and Greek-owned tankers ablaze after Iran claims 'underwater drone' strike
It means if you sail through it, Iran will launch drones and missiles at your ship.
zja··on SmartOS
> This architecture has a variety of advantages including increased security, no need for patching, fast upgrades and recovery.

SmartOS was developed by Joyent for their cloud computing product, it's primary use case isn't desktop computing. I think the advantages mentioned above were probably a bigger factor than the disk space. I would also guess that PXE would be the standard way to boot in a datacenter, not USB.

zja··on 6-Day and IP Address Certificates Are Generally Available
The are some great points
zja··on Ask HN: Share your personal website

zja··on Google Opal
> Join our Discord for support and sharing feedback

I’m surprised to see Google directing people to Discord, do they do that for other products?

zja··on OpenTelemetry: Escape Hatch from the Observability Cartel
> otel is at odds with the observability business because these actors have little interest to contribute back to telemetry agents since anyone can reap the rewards of that.

But all major vendors _do_ contribute to OTEL.

zja··on Lawyers are already using AI. Will judges be next?
very cool story!
zja··on Ask HN: What is nowadays (opensource) way of converting HTML to PDF?
pandoc
zja··on U.S. Military Strikes Drug Vessel from Venezuela, Killing 11
> the best solution seems to be treating them as military targets

Worked out great for the Philippines…

zja··on In a first, Google has released data on how much energy an AI prompt uses
Seconded, I’ve yet to use an LLM that can consistently provide sources that back up what it’s telling me.
zja··on Open Source Projects Receive Funding to Reclaim the Public Internet
Governments employ millions of people, money is absolutely not a limitation.
zja··on AT&T Email-to-Text Gateway Service Ending June 17
Why would I want small businesses to be able to spam me as well the large ones? I’d prefer no one does, but less is better than more.
zja··on Reasoning models don't always say what they think
How is that in conflict with the fact that humans can introspect?
zja··on Gödel's theorem debunks the most important AI myth – Roger Penrose [video]
Yeah I don’t know why GP would think computability theory doesn’t apply to AI. Is there a single example of a problem that isn’t computable by a Turing machine that can be computed by AI?
zja··on A DOGE staffer appears to be posting DOGE work on his public GitHub
Siphoning money away from the public and to themselves is the whole point.
zja··on GitHub Codespaces Alternatives
FWIW there’s a nix feature for devcontainers (https://github.com/devcontainers/features/tree/main/src/nix)
zja··on Daniel Penny Gets Hired by Andreessen Horowitz
Maybe the job is actually really easy?
zja··on Getting to 2M users as a one woman dev team [video]
You truncate passwords to prevent DOS
zja··on dtrace.conf(24)
I hadn’t heard of an unconference before, sounds like a cool idea. I’m a longtime enjoyer of Oxide and Friends, so looking forward to the event!

Also what the hell is Fishpong, I will be looking into that.

zja··on Genie 2: A large-scale foundation world model
I love the outtakes section in the bottom. It made me laugh but it also feels more transparent than a lot of GenAI stuff that’s being announced.
zja··on My son (9 yrs old) used plain JavaScript to make a game, and wants your feedback
Fun game! Good job Armaan!
zja··on M4 MacBook Pro
> MacBook Air is the world’s most popular laptop, and with Apple Intelligence, it’s even better. Now, models with M2 and M3 double the starting memory to 16GB, while keeping the starting price at just $999 — a terrific value for the world’s best-selling laptop.

This is nice, and long overdue.

zja··on Ask HN: How should I learn Rust for Tauri development?
The Rust book is a good start https://doc.rust-lang.org/book/
zja··on Mozilla pledges to 'Reclaim the Internet' with new identity by JKR
I really like the original dinosaur logo, I didn't realize it was designed by Shepard Fairey.
zja··on Scramble: Open-Source Alternative to Grammarly
That tends to not be open source, and people don’t claim that it is.
zja··on Porting systemd to musl Libc-powered Linux
Boot times are pretty important for serverless environments. Alpine, which uses musl, is very popular in those situations.
zja··on Russ Cox is stepping down as the Go tech lead
Are there any Go team members that don’t work for Google? It’s a lot easier to remain civil/avoid drama when people know each other personally, and work together at a big company with an HR department.
