zipperhead··on A Good Vimrc
I came across [xcape](https://github.com/alols/xcape) this week. It is a great little utility which can map escape to another key like control or shift but only when pressed once. For example you can configure the control key to be escape if pressed once, but will still act as control if held down. Combined with mapping caps lock to control, I now have the best of all worlds. Highly recommended.
zipperhead··on LogMeIn acquires Lastpass
I store the private keyfile outside of Dropbox. To me it's a very acceptable tradeoff.
zipperhead··on Skype Switched to the MSN Messenger Protocol (2014)
Certainly:

I'm using it from arch, via the AUR package purple-skypeweb-git

zipperhead··on Skype Switched to the MSN Messenger Protocol (2014)
I've been using the HTTP-based skype pidgin client. It seems to mostly work - the only show stopper is that file transfer requests fail silently. I had someone trying to send me a file. I had no idea. It was a little awkward.
zipperhead··on Announcing Git Large File Storage
As a counterpoint, I just set up git-annex and sync'd a couple of local servers plus a remote server, with no issues, by following along in the walkthrough. Granted, it's not exactly an out-of-the-box setup, like say, syncthing, but it wasn't anything overly difficult.
zipperhead··on Privacy is at a crossroads. Choose wisely
I've thought of using hosts file vs. plugins but have never really made the switch. I'm a bit concerned that I'll run into cases like a website is broken due to a hosts file setting, and I can't easily bypass it like I can with a plugin. Do you ever run into situations like this?
zipperhead··on Battery power alone can be used to track Android phones
That's the problem with android. The 'typical user' has no control over individual app permission - it's literally all or none. If you install the app you give it access to the GPS, as long as it has specified that permission.
zipperhead··on Stop Changing UIs for No Good Reason
Something about the entire approach Google is taking with Lollipop (and Material Design) just seems off to me. I can see their philosophy but I don't agree with large parts of it (I don't need or want animations to guide me along the path thank you).

Overall I'm left with a feeling of a lack of 'grace'. It's just not graceful, which I guess is where the art of UI comes into play. Maybe they will get there eventually, but right now it's still clunky as hell. Even worse, they are dropping functionality along the way.

zipperhead··on Hey Paypal, why do you need access to my microphone, camera and photos?
I don't think the solution is to ignore it though. Maybe it needs more calls to change the implementation and fix the core issue.
zipperhead··on Unix Tricks
I usually visit these threads knowing that I will pick up something useful to add to the toolbox... thank you for 'envoy' - I think it will streamline my ssh key management.
zipperhead··on Eclipse 4.4, Luna, released
Thanks, I didn't realize you could do this. I've already updated via tarball but maybe will try this next time.

By the way this is documented in the FAQ: https://wiki.eclipse.org/FAQ_How_do_I_upgrade_Eclipse%3F

zipperhead··on Firefox 29
Okay... but you could always turn if off. I personally like having my 'status' things down there, things like gmail, lastpass, etc. I prefer to have the status items separated from the control-type items on top. I don't see why they had to nuke it.
zipperhead··on Our Love Affair With the Tablet Is Over
Yes, and the superior battery life of a tablet enables this casual consumption very nicely.
zipperhead··on Why You Should Try a Tiling Window Manager
Some questions from someone who likes the idea of a tiling window manager but doesn't quite see how it would work better than compositing. I'm coming at this from KDE. My top applications are: firefox, thunderbird, eclipse, sublime text, and terminator.

When I'm browsing, I like to have firefox in the middle of my screen. If it's stuck off to the side somewhere or buried amongst other tabs, I'm going to hate it. How do I make that work?

Eclipse is going to be full screen. I assume that's not going to be difficult.

Now with all that, I get someone asking me a question via skype. How do I get notified? Currently I get a nice notification via the taskbar. Do I lose the concept of notifications?

What about for widget-like things (cpu/network/etc)? Do people use conky or something like that in a tiled window?

zipperhead··on Unix Commands I Wish I’d Discovered Years Earlier
Better yet use 'less +F'. It's as easy to remember as tail -f.

The advantage of using less here is that you can easily interrupt the tailing (ctrl-c). For example, to search. Then just hit 'F' again to restart tailing. But now your search pattern will be highlighted as the data streams by.

zipperhead··on Alt is a simpler and prettier interface to NewsBlur
Yes. IMO that list is core and shouldn't be hidden away. Maybe a good compromise would be to allow it to be expanded, and not block the underlying text when expanded. i.e. an option to tuck it off to the side an leave it in place.
zipperhead··on Google Maps: The Never Ending Quest For Perfection
To me it was the first real-life example of an interactive, desktop-like experience on the web (that wasn't some crappy flash app). It was a huge leap.
zipperhead··on Galaxy Nexus now on sale in Google Play
Can anyone comment on the 3G reception and the wifi reception?

I've heard varying reports on problems in these areas, but it's difficult to tell if they are carrier-related for the 3G.

Also, is the wifi any good? I found the reception on the Nexus S severely lacking.

zipperhead··on Viewpoints: What will you do with your Pi?
Take a look into rsnapshot. It already exists and does exactly what you're looking for.
zipperhead··on Yes, Virginia, Scala is hard
As someone who has seen scala, but never really wrote anything in it, what in heaven's name does that statement do?
zipperhead··on When free markets make it worse: new TLDs
If it catches on, yes. Did you note the price? $185K for a domain name. I agree with you about the domain-name squatting - it's a real issue - but I don't see how this makes things any better.
zipperhead··on Dayta is free, forever (and now for web too)
I've been looking an app like this for android. Any suggestions? I'm not sure I'd want to store all my personal data using the web app.
