zionic··on Leak ruins NASA moon rocket launch bid; next try weeks away
Hydrogen vehicles are essentially an oil company scam. They are fraud, at a physics level, vs EVs. They fall apart the second you take a serious, first-principles look at how they work.

HN rate limits my replies you can read my sibling comment if you’d like more information.

Hydrogen is an extremely inefficient (200-300% the energy waste of an EV) battery that’s notoriously difficult to handle, contain, and transport safely. Unless we’re mining gas giants hydrogen is not a fuel source, so you have to immediately toss 40-50% of the energy you produce to create it. You lose a ton then transporting it to its point of consumption, and even then converting that (wastefully) stored energy to kinetic energy is STILL less efficient than an EV. Instead, all of that energy used to make hydrogen could have been sent via the grid at 90-95% efficiency to an EV that will store and convert that energy to motion at 85-90% efficiency.

A hydrogen economy means tens of PWH of waste energy vs a pure EV economy.

The only reason you’d want hydrogen is if you’ve invested trillions in the oil industry and hope to repurpose that infrastructure.

Is that applicable when the rocket scientists themselves mostly despise this thing?

SLS as a platform was forced on the scientists by the politicians.

Also from a science perspective: the funding of this boondoggle has sucked the air out of the room, lots of other projects weren’t funded to make this thing happen. Seems like all SLS discussion is inherently political.

Exactly. This event just makes all the hydrogen car people even more entertaining.

At this point I’m fairly convinced hydrogen cars were a coordinated plan by oil companies to delay EVs. It probably would have worked if Tesla hadn’t come out of nowhere.

zionic··on Blocking Kiwifarms
So would you argue then anyone against mass surveillance supports terrorism? That if you don’t support NSA hardware back doors you might as well fly the planes into the towers yourself?
zionic··on Blocking Kiwifarms
“Anyone who isn’t performatively anti things-I-disagree with is thing-I-disagree-with”

I remember my liberal friends sneering Bush for his “you’re with us or against us” take on the war on terror/patriot act. Funny how it’s come full circle.

zionic··on Blocking Kiwifarms
Exactly. You can go on Reddit right now and find calls for violence, extermination of various groups, etc etc etc, but you’ll never see cloudfare take action then.

Censorship always starts with the undesirables. It never ends there.

zionic··on Blocking Kiwifarms
What other reasonable conclusion exists besides the CEO of cloudfare being a coward?
zionic··on Blocking Kiwifarms
Cloudfare really snatched defeat from the jaws of victory here. Their Wednesday post was fantastic, and for once I had an ounce of hope they’d do the right thing.

Of course they took less than a week to completely cave, falling back on their spineless nature. This kind of institutional rot starts at the top, they desperately need a new CEO.

Utility “companies” don’t get to pick and choose, if you pick and choose you are just a regular company which opens up the whole monopoly trust-busting side of things.

Go watch the original, it’s weapons grade cheese.

That’s just lazy writing, akin to those cheesy horror movies where everyone has to be a complete idiot to die to the monster.

A much better story is where smart, cunning characters vie against one another. There’s eb and flow, give and take, maybe a few pivotal movements that set the characters down a path they’ll resist but ultimately succumb too. Where when they reach the end despite their best efforts looking back they made the (mostly) same choices but still failed. Early Game of Thrones was a masterpiece in this regard.

It’s wokewashing.

The more diverse you make your cast, the more immune you are to criticism when your product flops.

If the show was less diverse and flopped they couldn’t play the racism card to wipe reviews and churn up sympathetic media.

Really? Not a single example? Ok VICE time to one up them.
zionic··on USB 4 version 2 promises 80 Gbps speeds over existing cables
Ok so the solution is obvious. We form the Federation Advocating Reasonable Cables and abduct USB-IF members.

Then, we guarantee their safe release given one condition: Anyone whose grandma mails us a fully compliant USB cable gets to go free.

I guarantee the standards body will come to their senses shortly.

How about “hey Siri, play LOTR replacing every character with Nicolas Cage”
zionic··on Fed expects to launch long-awaited Faster Payments System by 2023
>but building a system for 330,000,000 people across 50 states that works flawlessly (and is responsible for trillions of dollars) isn't easy.

You seem to be assuming they’ll succeed.

I don’t think the government could do that for $15 Trillion, never the less $15 Million.

zionic··on Xcode Cloud overview
>Slow. Fails randomly with unknown error messages.

I mean, that’s Xcode on your machine. Why would Xcode on someone else’s machine be any better?

This is true and does not deserve to be downvoted

$15 Million to “study”… “how they would implement it”

How should I say it, “come on man”?

Why would I ever pay hetzner money when they dare to dictate what software I can/can not run.
zionic··on They're trying to get me kidnapped and tortured, but Twitter doesn't care
This is why I prefer “protocols over platforms”.

This entire thing isn’t twitters fault any more than it is WiFi’s, DNS, or TCP’s.

zionic··on Day ahead electricity prices for EU
That gasoline wouldn’t be an energy source, it’d be an extremely crappy battery.

Far better to just send the power via grid to an EV @95% then toss 60% or more of it to make a gallon of gas

zionic··on Day ahead electricity prices for EU
I’m just exhausted from arguing with the electrically illiterate.

HVDC makes transmission from state to state trivial at almost no loss. We should have a national HVDC grid so that a breeze in Texas might power a toaster in Connecticut.

Instead we have another $XX Billion for Ukraine. Another $13B here for a new carrier we’ll never need etc etc. So much waste everywhere while fundamental problems go unsolved.

zionic··on Cancelling student debt is essentially printing money
The EU gets all the perks of being a vassal state with absolutely none of the taxes.

The entire post-WWII world order has been to their benefit at our expense.

I’d rather my tax dollars go towards state run health insurance than protecting Germany from Russian shenanigans.

zionic··on Mainnet Merge Announcement
But HN comments assured me it was never going to happen/will stay "6 months away".

I sure hope those people bought mining GPUs/put their money where their mouth is.

zionic··on Mainnet Merge Announcement
ETH PoS includes offline penalties proportional to the % of the network that goes down.

If your home RasPi validator drops you don't lose much. If 25% of users stake on coinbase and _they_ go down the penalties are much higher.

So there's an incentive to validate on your own hardware/connection.

zionic··on Ex-Twitter exec blows the whistle, alleging reckless cybersecurity policies
I suspect this will be the norm going forward.

Big tech was taken over by bean counters long ago, the fact that it’s all running on duct tape and popsicle sticks under the hood will come back to bite us when we have a digital Pearl Harbor event.

China will invade Taiwan and the first shot won’t be physical, it will be activating the 30 years of assets they grew in AWS/GCP/cloudfare/level3/AT&T/Etc

Most of their HR/engineering departments are completely retarded. They’ll hire any H1B who passes l33t code that accepts $50k under market rate then give them repo access in a few weeks. Our soulless megacorps are beyond easy to penetrate by hostile intelligence.

The CIA/NSA/FBI, you know the groups who we pay billions per year for and they take half my income to fund will of course not catch any of this.

The FBI is too busy manufacturing domestic terrorist, the NSA is too busy hacking American companies, and the CIA is too busy importing drugs to actually secure our country from foreign attack. Why? Because it’s been so long since we were actually attacked they believe it can’t happen so why not loot Rome in the mean time?

zionic··on Ex-Twitter exec blows the whistle, alleging reckless cybersecurity policies
It’s hard to read your comment, and the zeitgeist, and then conclude a nonviolent end is the most likely outcome.

These aren’t ideas that can be peacefully mediated.

zionic··on Halo system link still holds up more than 20 years later
I remember the first time I hooked it up, finally found a connection, and connected my OG xbox to someone in the UK (!!!) to play halo CE with.

I was promptly called the N word and exploded on spawn again and again because it was a modded/hacked map.

It was still magical.
