zinssmeister··on Open-plan offices must die
I was never a fan of open-plan office space. As a programmer it's like trying to get work done at a school cafeteria. Which doesn't work without a good pair of head phones. How stupid, if you think about it, we all sit around with head phones, trying to stay in the zone. Yeah I get work done in such environments, but my best work was created in a 2-4 people office or at home, working on problems by myself while connected to a team chat.
zinssmeister··on All of Einstein's writings are now online
I agree, the UI is kinda terrible :(
zinssmeister··on Milk Inc. to shut down Oink on March 31st
Called this one a few months ago https://twitter.com/#!/zinssmeister/status/15514462538288332...

But actually I am still surprised how quick this got axed. As a user you gotta ask yourself these days if it's worth investing a lot of time and content into a new app. An App that might be shut down, just because the builders want to go try out a new idea. To give Kevin Rose some credit here, he always state up front that Milk was going to "try" different ideas and move on to another if one wasn't bringing the right amount of traction. Now I hoped that the transition over to a new idea wouldn't mean the instand death of the previous and that's probably the biggest surprise here.

zinssmeister··on Ask HN: Did you learn a language this year?
went from PHP to a bit of Ruby and extended my skills in JavaScript land with learning CoffeeScript
zinssmeister··on Ask HN: Where do HN people hangout online?
we have a small group of HN readers showing off and helping each other on their projects over at http://www.virtualrockstars.com
zinssmeister··on Desingineer – the mythical person every startup is looking for
if you make sure to build out the UI/UX first and then start coding a feature you can accomodate for this a bit
zinssmeister··on Jobs, Jobs, Jobs
ok, so indeed.com is great and was a good investment. How does that help create jobs?
zinssmeister··on JavaScript Web Apps by O'Reilly
Yes it covers backbone.js and other frameworks.
zinssmeister··on One More Thing…
This was the only article I read about Steve leaving Apple. It says it all and had me on the edge of my seat...a bit. One of the best articles on Techcrunch in a while.

zinssmeister··on John Dvorak: Apple Should Pull the Plug on the iPhone (2007)
What people saw back then is that Jobs was selling a phone. When in reality Steve was selling a post-pc device that could also make phone calls. That's why the usual fashion cycle didn't apply.
zinssmeister··on 2011 Startup School
One of the best events I have been to. I highly recommend attending in person. The atmosphere that day in the auditorium was amazing and you get to meet people from around the world.

Have I mentioned it's free?

zinssmeister··on Ask HN:Should I continue working at a (failing?) startup?
If you think the startup is failing it is either because a.) the startup is actually failing or b.)you don't believe it can be a success and assume it is failing. Either way it doesn't sound like you are passionate enough about this startup anymore.

So the real question should be. Should you continue to work at a startup you have no passion for? The Answer is NO. Change jobs.

zinssmeister··on Is it a tech boom or a bubble?
if we look at the sheer number of internet users and the over all demand for web driven devices and solutions it's clearly not a bubble.
zinssmeister··on The healthy future of the web industry maybe short-lived
There is no "bubble" when it comes to the talent shortage. We are short on talent because developers are needed EVERYWHERE.

Consumers are using technology on a scale never seen before. Our lives went from ONLINE to ONLINE ALL THE TIME. Every company in every industry has to hire web people, every agency needs a go-to web guy and the web industry itself is growing into every aspect of our lives: Entertainment (Netflix, Zynga), Mobile, Communication, Transportation, etc.

The amount of projects developers and designers have to maintain and build from scratch is incredible. Back in the day we had computers on the web. Now we TV's, phones, tablets, cars and even a Samsung fridge connected to the web. Building all this stuff takes talent... lots of it. And the best part about it, consumers want this.

zinssmeister··on Why The Valley Wants Designers That Can Code
I am a coder that can design. Maybe I should move to the valley
zinssmeister··on The New Guy's Computer
Maybe I am a minimalist. But this seems like way too much stuff man.

But regardless of that it's a pretty need guide of tools and I use a few from this list myself.

zinssmeister··on The traveling German carpenters
I was born and raised in Germany as well but am now in Dallas getting ready to move to Palo Alto.

Besides this digital Walz it might also be interesting to start a small network for "Global German Tech Talent" or something. I know there are a few germans in the Valley.

zinssmeister··on The traveling German carpenters
I think the most critical step towards success of such a thing is getting a few bigger companies in each of the startup areas to offer exclusive intern/entry/mid-level positions to these kinds of people.
zinssmeister··on The traveling German carpenters
Yes of course one can just do it. But having a bit of an umbrella organization around this would help get the word out.
zinssmeister··on The traveling German carpenters
Yeah I experienced this growing up as a kid in Germany. I remember these people from other towns in their "strange" outfits. Over the years they got less and less but you can still find a few.

Now living here in the U.S. I wonder how something like this would maybe translate over to coders and designers in startups. Seeing that we have these startup heavy areas across the country. Why not have people work a year in the Valley, then move a year to NYC, followed by another year in Boston or Austin. Would be a fun and rewarding program for young talent.

zinssmeister··on Harvard Online Master’s Degree
Getting this master degree from the Open University would require you to fly to europe/uk to sit your exams. They let you study online but you must take the exams at one of their regional centers. They don't have one of those outside of europe
zinssmeister··on Show HN: CSS3 Animated Glowing Forms
what iphone are you using? 3G? 4?
zinssmeister··on Show HN: CSS3 Animated Glowing Forms
haha sorry about that. good job woman :) Ok that doesn't sound right either.

Yeah I just checked it on my iPad and it looks nice.

zinssmeister··on Show HN: CSS3 Animated Glowing Forms
super slick! I can see this work well on an iPhone webview. I want it like ice cream :)

Awesome job man.

zinssmeister··on Facebook is Big and Boring
I think the biggest part of this change in facebook usage is that we all just grew out of this college network and started adding co-workers and all sorts of other mature audience. This then causes you to tread facebook as a different kind of communication tool. I guess you can say the experience on facebook just matured all together and people are using it differently. Everyone is more cautious about the way they come across on the social graph and what they make public.

After all thanks to Zynga we now all got our mothers, relatives and what not as facebook friends. And like the article says, who has time to setup lists?!

zinssmeister··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancers? (April 2011)
Hey, I am the founder of http://www.virtualrockstars.com and I might need some PHP help here and there. Maybe we can get in touch?

zinssmeister··on The State of Version Control: an Infographic
for http://www.virtualrockstars.com I am using SVN, simply because that's what I used before and I didn't know of Git being so awesome at the time. But I must say SVN is still pretty good... I agree that you can't love it compared to Git but its pretty pretty good.
zinssmeister··on IE6 died March 1, 2010
when we started http://www.virtualrockstars.com we didn't even consider for one second optimizing for IE6. I believe the few percentage of IE6 browser still (!) in use out there are web devs being forced to test on IE6 (and some companies with IT departments too lazy to upgrade)
