zidar··on The Code Review Bottleneck
This almost sounds like pair programming but one doing reviews and other writing the code and fixes.
zidar··on Linthub: Static code analysis for GitHub pull requests
This looks pretty awesome and will just get better as more languages get supported. But, it comments on commits, not on the diff in the PR. I think commeting on the diff looks nicer (you see code snippet with the comment) and in my opinion it's also easyer to find all the comments that way. Instead of clicking the commit hash on the commen each time.
zidar··on Firefox 34 Launches with Yahoo as Its Default Search Engine
These were nice, but you had to configure each one yourself. I had one for google and youtube, but that was it. With DDG, the bangs come quite nicely preconfigured.
zidar··on Show HN: Rainbowstream – Twitter the geek way
And it works better than lynx.
zidar··on Nope.c – A web framework with a tiny footprint
Could be a typo, or a freudian slip.
zidar··on Why Europeans Don't Refrigerate Their Eggs
Yes, that was a joke. We make fun of UK for driving on the wrong side too sometimes.
zidar··on Why Europeans Don't Refrigerate Their Eggs
As for the eggs, I don't remember ever seeing unrefrigerated eggs in Slovenia, Italy, Bosnia, Croatia, Portugal, Spain, Austria, Germany and France, but I haven't been in the UK yet.

And markets in Slovenia must have eggs refrigerated.

Translated from http://www.uradni-list.si/1/content?id=45033 "Eggs must be cooled under 5C, except during transportation when they can be at more than 5C, but no more than 24 hours."

zidar··on Show HN: Linux tool to show progress for cp, rm, dd, etc.
It is slightly slover, but one huge benifit is, that you get -P or --partial, which often ends up saving me lots of time.
zidar··on Awesome Sysadmin: Open-source sysadmin resources
I have a problem with "cloud storage." Most of those are simple file sync services and they have nothing to do with "the cloud".

OwnCloud for example, is just a php app used for syncing files with different clients. It is not distributed, the data is not replicated, there is no High Aveilabilty(HA) setup. Seafile could has HA if you pay.

The only true cloud storage system there is Swift. And CEPH is missing, which is a big player in cloud storage.

I may be wrong here, but cloud should be HA, scailable and distributed.

zidar··on Simplifying Django
"Giving views such a high priority is just wrong." No, it's not! If I'm trynig to teach someone with wery little programming experience, he'll want to see results. Starting out with something he'll see is what helps to keep him engaged.

There is a reason most tutorials start with: this is how you show something, and if you want to sawe data here's how to make ane use a database. Sure doing it the other way around seems natural to you and other web developers, but it's a bad way to introduce a framework to a complete newbie.

zidar··on Gnome Shell 3.10 with Wayland
I love Gnome Shell, and I'm happy to see the way things are progressing with Wayland. I have tried it on my Arch machine, but had to revert because of some bugs, but it'll get there soon.
zidar··on IntelliJ IDEA 13 Brings a Full Bag of Goodies to Android Developers
I am confused about how the IntelliJ IDEA with android plugins competes with Android Studio. I thought that Android Studio is suppose to replace IntellyJ for android development.
zidar··on Linux memory manager and your big data
You should look up some links in the article (proposed solution https://lkml.org/lkml/2013/11/24/133)

"Currently, the VM aims for a 1:1 ratio between the lists, which is the "perfect" trade-off between the ability to protect frequently used pages and the ability to detect frequently used pages. This means that working set changes bigger than half of cache memory go undetected and thrash indefinitely, whereas working sets bigger than half of cache memory are unprotected against used-once streams that don't even need caching."

zidar··on For the Love of God, Ask FizzBuzz
When I try to see if a person knows how to "think", I start with fizzbuzz and then ask them to do it again without if or case statements. The first time a person is asked something like that you see if they're a thinker or if they just go "that can't be done." That question does a good job dividing people into a group that in 5 years time will ether have 5 years of experience or 1 year of experience repeated 5 times.
zidar··on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS to be named Trusty Tahr
It's gonna take a while, but I really woder what comes after Z.
zidar··on The Workman Keyboard Layout
I use programmer dvorak, which also has swapped numbers and symbols and it's a blessing. The good thing about this one is also changes layout of the symbols so it's really a lot nicer to use.
zidar··on Bedrock Linux
Thank you for the explanation. It sounds to me that even if I want to use a package from a stable release like debian, there's another layer possible bugs. That said, I really like the idea. Wish you guys the best of luck and I'll be keeping a close eye on the progress.
zidar··on Bedrock Linux
And I still can't see how that would work. Some apps need the latest libraries latest kernel or something, so without "bleeding edge" system core some apps won't even run. There are always workarounds to that but those cause more harm than good.

Still I will keep an eye on Bedrock hoping they come up with something cool.

zidar··on Bedrock Linux
"a rock-solid stable base yet still have easy access to cutting-edge packages ..." This sounds really nice in theory and I hope they can pull it of, but I can't see how that can work.
zidar··on Bedrock Linux
We're like the vegans of the linux world.
zidar··on 10 reasons to believe P != NP
I was really confused before I realized that there's a "!" missing.
zidar··on Java to Scala converter
This looks great. Now if only Scala would play nice with Android, there would be no need to look back at java at all.
zidar··on Lessons learned in a year of freelancing
From what I know, you've freenlanced even before you've opened your own company. So this step up probably wasn't as hard as maybe for someone who hasn't done as much freelancing before. Any advice for anyone that just realized "gee I feel like I should be a freelancer" and doesn't have much exposure or contacts to start with.
zidar··on Gnome 3.10 Release Notes
I use Gnome 3.8 with my archlinux, and I've tried it because it was giving me the least problems, now I can't touch anything else because it just seems slow and not as intuitive. It gets under your skin in a good way.

The best thing about it is also when it gets "a bit funky" it's as easy as "alt+f2 r" to fix it and have it running as good as new.

zidar··on A Stick Figure Guide to the Advanced Encryption Standard (2009)
Should be added to many text books too.
zidar··on I hate the Pumping Lemma
Call me crazy, but I like the pumping lemma

"It has an ferociously intimidating logical structure, with no fewer than five alternating quantifiers ... If two are a struggle, five is cruelty".

Seriously, if you're planing on using the pumping lemma you should also be able to read and understand those five quantifiers. It's not "just the lemma", it's also the ability to read that and understand it that has some value in itself. Go on then to the pumping lemma for context free languages. I don't know about you but learning how to read the lemma and understand it, helped me understand the lemma for CFG really quickly.

Knowledge is always good, and if you have to learn something else to get the lemma too, then that's even better and what do you know maybe one day you'll have to know how to read a complex statement with quantifiers and not the pumping lemma.

zidar··on Shrinking the address bar width in browsers
Thats true, but wasting space with a container that's too big and almost never fully used is also questionable. And a lof of information can quickly become to much information so having a lot in bookmarks there doesn't seem practical to me.

I just tried this and it works well so I'm sticking with it.

zidar··on How to record audio in Chrome with native HTML5 APIs
No, they switched because chrome no longer has flash. Not because it didn't work. My point was, chrome solution for replacing flash doesn't work as good as flash.
zidar··on How to record audio in Chrome with native HTML5 APIs
Flahs, an evil old thing everyone seem to want to avoid. But the fact is, it usually works better than other alternatives.

Seeing many html5+js+css > Flash posts, and it's so nice when everyone is pointing out how awesome it is, until you try to do something useful like dubjoy. Where it turned out for you guys that flash is the only logical way to do it. I hope alternatives will get better soon, until then, we're stuck.

zidar··on Show HN: Dubjoy makes it easy to voice translate any video
Sad thing one that google part, but I hope you'll be able to move away from flash soon.
