zheng··on Some performance tweaks
I was just talking with a colleague the other day about how to simplify the number of hash functions needed for a bloom filter. He recommended something similar to what the paper describes, but we both dismissed it as "probably won't work". Just goes to show you that sometimes the simple solution is worth closer examination. Thanks for the paper!
zheng··on Huffshell: You probably type too much.
Unless of course you only need to write one line. Not every use of git requires complex formatting in commit messages. Almost all of my git repos are used by me alone, and one line is enough. Obviously this isn't the main purpose of git, but I'm guessing I'm not the only developer using it this way.
zheng··on One of Apple’s Best Ideas Ever — Made Worse
I know people have had issues, but mine works perfectly. I own a MBA and I like the Series 9 touchpad better in many aspects. I agree on the ports though, poor design choices.
zheng··on Monk creates a new Tibetan Unicode font
That's what I suspected. For those of us who work with computers for most of our waking hours, our bodies get use to focusing on what we are clicking on. Thanks for your feedback.
zheng··on Monk creates a new Tibetan Unicode font
My officemate does this as well. What is the reasoning? Does it help you focus on the content? Do you always click on the next word to be read? I'm curious as to what could cause this behavior to emerge.
zheng··on My first year as employee #1 of a YC company
If they actually get in trouble, sure that would be an issue. But I'm pretty sure if I ran a company and it was brought to my attention that there was some traffic to *.xxx domains, I'd at least want to know why.

"You may apply once per email address"

1. Write script to register for email addresses

2. Hook up to application for 11k

3. ???

4. Profit?

Seriously though, I'm guessing this is either a cheap way to farm some emails or the benefit will include some MLM crap.

zheng··on Craig Newmark, the Principled Jerk
I don't understand the drama either, but everyone knows it isn't that easy. As has been said many times, their network effect is what matters here, not features. I use craigslist and I hate it (seriously, something about the site irks me) but I know I have no choice if I want the best chance of finding something. I used padmapper and loved it; it was a better service.

For a good example of how strong network effects play into things, look at Google+. Seriously, if Google couldn't kill Facebook by building a better service (IMO), how do you expect a company with exactly 0 existing users to usurp CL?

TBH I don't have a good solution because I don't think regulation is the answer here. Up until about today I would have said the best value add for a service is to start by targeting sellers, and grow the buyer market later (e.g. use service X to post ads to CL, <other marketplace>, etc)

zheng··on NSA Careers for DEF CON Attendees
What about Google, Microsoft, IBM, etc?
zheng··on Ask HN: Why are all the Digg stories immediately killed?
Is the fix just to submit the original? I've never used digg but isn't it just adding comments to the original story? In many ways, I think this policy should apply to reddit links as well, but at least reddit has original content like AmA's

EDIT: Spelling

zheng··on Getting your heart rate using R and Ruby.
Plus computers actually remember things. I think anyone here can see that a computerized method of gathering data isn't interesting for the method per se but the ease of keeping and analyzing said data over a period of time.
zheng··on Mars rover "Curiosity" set for touchdown next week
So that is basically insane, but I do have to ask how many of those kinds of maneuvers have been tried before? I mean, they say they can't land the rover with rockets, so I assume they have used alternate methods before as well?
zheng··on Ask HN: Frontpage showing 25 instead of 30 stories?
And looks like it's back to 30. Probably had to do with the downtime.
zheng··on Ask HN: Which version of Python do HN'ers prefer at this point?
Building a webapp, probably still 2.7

However, I much prefer 3.x. Much cleaner, better stdlib, and unicode everything. If you do use 2.7, please please please use 3.x printing though (from __future__ import print_function)

zheng··on Hangouts now available in Gmail, Google+ account not required
Glass needs to operate on data in-flight, what better way to train it? However, you do have a point wrt to Youtube. I think I left my <cynicism> tag out of the previous post.
zheng··on Why Apple's new ads look like Microsoft made them.
Maybe, but probably not. 1984 Apple != 2012 Apple.
zheng··on Hangouts now available in Gmail, Google+ account not required
...not quite. The hangout backend will now power all video calls, but to do more than a 1-on-1 chat, you will still need a G+ profile.

Interesting as the old backend was p2p, but it sounds like hangouts are a more standard client/server. Maybe Google needed more voice data to mine. Actually better yet, facial expression data to mine. After all, Glass could live and die by its ability to correctly identify faces.

zheng··on Why Do We Expect So Little of Our Youth?
On the "different people can believe different things", I think this is very valid, but is misapplied early on in education to mean "everyone is right/special". Really, if you can present a different opinion on something and can provide evidence for your reasoning, that's great. If you want to claim that Hamlet is really about aliens because you like getting laughs from your friends, I really hope the teacher calls you on your bullshit.
zheng··on Why Do We Expect So Little of Our Youth?
One of the highest truth/word comments I've read in a long time. The real issue with education in America is that everyone a) thinks it is someone else's problem and b) thinks if they just change x we will rocket to the top.
zheng··on The Construct
Seriously, WTF is "The Construct"? The original title was much more informative. I'm not against editing headlines, but throwing away an informative one for something my teenage brother would name a band is not helpful.
zheng··on The Linux Talent Draft is On
This article is very ambiguous on what kind of linux talent they see as being needed. Are they looking for sysadmins or developers? By linux do they mean using tools like gcc, make, etc? Or do they mean writing tools against a POSIX interface? Also, considering that basically every college uses a linux environment, I find it odd that they can't find devs who can work in linux.
zheng··on Concise list of upcoming Coursera courses by month
So I've only been tangentially involved with these online education companies, what makes Coursera classes so much worse than Udacity?
zheng··on Physical assault by McDonald's for wearing Digital Eye Glass
While I agree, that doesn't really effect their point.
zheng··on Leap Motion's High-Res NUI Will Make Today's Touch A 'Legacy'
This is called strength training, and yes, if you spend the majority of your day holding your arms up your muscles will adapt and it will become easier to do for longer without as many breaks.
zheng··on Police pull over and stop Google driverless car in Washington, D.C.
Flagged. Seriously, how did this get upvoted? It is a picture of a police officer standing somewhat close to a google car. A tl;dr would be longer than the story because there is literally no text.
zheng··on Fullscreen in Mountain Lion still renders second display useless
I have no reason to upgrade to ML. I don't really use my Air all that much, but if they fixed this I would upgrade in a second. Too bad.
zheng··on When Art, Apple and the Secret Service Collide: 'People Staring at Computers'
Good read. My biggest question is why didn't the artist just ask the apple store if it would be ok to install an app that took photos instead of asking if it would be ok to take photos? My guess is he knew they would say no, but I could be wrong. There is two sides to every story, but Apple doesn't come out smelling very good here.
zheng··on A day in the life of a Code for America fellow
Seems like not much coding happens in America... /snark

Seriously though, the author goes into more detail about his coffee than his job. I assume the purpose of a post like this is to publicize and advertise for CfA, but it doesn't really tell me much about either the org or the work.

zheng··on Paid Vacation? That’s Not Cool. You Know What’s Cool? Paid, Paid Vacation.
Like I said in my OP, the one who gives it to me for vacation. Otherwise my savings account grows by $7500 and I take a very modest vacation, which is probably worse for me in the long run. Also, I'm not the only one who makes decisions, and I know that if I told my wife we had to spend $7500 on vacation she would be much happier than if I told her I got a $7500 raise that was going in the bank.
zheng··on Paid Vacation? That’s Not Cool. You Know What’s Cool? Paid, Paid Vacation.
You're missing the point. I would like it if they just paid me an extra $7500 a year as well. Then I would end up taking a 7-day working vacation. I know it's not good for me, but I do it anyways. I sure as hell wouldn't spend $7500 on vacation (that's over double what I've ever spent for my wife and I).

By forcing me to only get the money if I use it for vacation, I will have a better time, and I will relax more, both of which will improve my stress levels, etc. Also, the fact that they are pushing this into their culture shows that they truly value some sense of work/life balance, which is a big turn on for a company. So many companies say they want work/life balance, then you see that working <60hr weeks is seen as not pulling your weight.
